Part 4 - John D. Liu at The BirdHouse
In the fourth part of this series, Cameron Miller and John D. Liu discuss how we can ensure that the right people are being rewarded for land restoration. How can we ensure that restoration projects aren't simply increasing the property values of already-wealthy landlords and governments? How might we employ land tenure?
John discusses the need for a new currency, because currency is a belief system. If we reach a critical mass of people believing in this currency and thus recognizing the root of true wealth, real progress can be made. Right now, our economic and education systems are not in alignment with the biological processes of the world. We are determining whether future generations that can continue, and it’s not the Earth that is in danger, it’s human civilization. In indigenous thought, the concept of land ownership is ridiculous. It is corrupt. To hold onto a corrupt concept is basically to lose your soul.
Community land trusts are an option. This is a way to aggregate wealth. A lot of these challenges are interrelated. If we incentivize regeneration, then all of our work will go towards restoring the Earth.

I moved to Mexico and it is night and day. Elders are honored, respected, loved. Yet another reason which I felt so out of place in N. America. I was raised to respect and hold elders at the highest level. NOTE: In English, it is said "how old are you". That does not exist in Spanish! It is not how "old" are you, it is ¿Cuántos años tienes? Translating to: How many years do you have?

What's worse: the hair-brained crackpot economic theories of an anti-capitalist or the "indigenous land acknowledgement" in the opening? Answer: whichever one lasts longer, and that would be the crackpot economic theory.

He completely failed to substantiate his contention that the establishment of euthanasia would be a perpetuation of death phobia. No reasoning, just a fiat. No, it would not be a perpetuation of death phobia. It would be the most substantial statement possible that there are some things worse than death, such as unbearable, pointless pain that has no reasonable expectation to resolve regardless of any possible intervention, other than euthanasia.

    • @howlinthewilderness

Good point John. One I've thought of too after speaking with Stephen. We could put it back to him that his wintering in Oaxaca as a "respiratory refugee" is also a "deathphobic" move. I don't begrudge him wanting relief from the harsh Ontario winters, but it seems hypocritical following his comments on euthanasia.

How can we turn our open spaces into edible gardens! How can we get the whole community singing together! How can we introduce an identity - a true sense of community and togetherness after all the isolation we’ve been living in? How do we do that? Can somebody answer????

I love your interviews and I have a lot of respect for you. One thing I have to say though.....I am German and I am a grandchild of the "nazi generation". I do not remember that part of German history being hidden from me....rather the opposite. We went over it several times in school. I grew up with deep disdain for the deeds of the nazis. Maybe it was part of me leaving Germany in my 20s and moving to the USA, just to find what you are talking about....a fake kind of freedom and as of today a fascist regime. Not fascist like Hitler, but in a way more subtle and maybe even more dangerous. By having listened to you, I start feeling the disconnect from my ancestors....this is hitting me by surprise but you made me cry because this deeply resonates. My family took it hard when I left and I didn't understand back then why. I am now getting a hint of it. I have to admit I start to feel deeply uprooted and lost and I wish I could go back but that is now impossible as I am 51 and have entanglements and Germany has jet again turned totalitarian under Corona. I will continue to listen to your podcasts and interviews....I think a lot about death lately....I need to get aligned. Thank you.
