    The FDA has issued a "black box" warning for Pitocin, a synthetic oxytocin drug used to induce or strengthen contractions during labor, because of its serious and potentially life-threatening risks: Uterine rupture: Pitocin can cause the uterus to rupture, especially in women who are sensitive to its effects. Fetal distress: Pitocin can cause overly strong contractions that deprive the baby of oxygen. Water intoxication: Pitocin can cause water intoxication, which can lead to convulsions and coma. Maternal death: Pitocin can cause maternal death. Allergic reactions: Pitocin can cause allergic reactions in the birthing mother. Postpartum hemorrhage: Pitocin can increase the risk of postpartum hemorrhage. Brain damage: Pitocin can cause brain damage in babies. The FDA's black box warning is its most severe warning and draws attention to a drug's adverse and potentially lethal effects.

    It is so welcoming to even hear of a medical professional, who is concerned about such things. My contention is that the lack of adequate pain control comes down to expediency. As you said, any deep sedation or anesthesia would be accompanied by more personnel, more monitoring, and thus more time. A doctors patient load and schedule is often his worst enemy, at least in his mind. Another pet peeve of mine is that the medical community has this philosophy that only pain lasting over a certain unspecified and probably unknown even to them amount of time is worth treating. In other words, the intensity is secondary to the direction. As to your final statements, I do not believe at the present time there is anything else to be researched as far as preventing pain without deep sedation or anesthesia. With my history of medical trauma ( PTSD) from invasive procedures, I will not submit myself to them without adequate pre-medication. I am a male by the way. Keep up the good work. Cheers.

    Is that the conclusion that was outlined in the article or is that the conclusion you came up with? Was the fluid actually analyzed and determined to be urine, or did you just conclude that because the fluid was determined to originate from the bladder? That conclusion is based on a faulty premise. Just because the fluid came from the bladder, doesn’t mean it’s urine.

    This is long-ish, but VERY important: I know that med/nursing students need access to teaching hospitals in order to complete their training. HOWEVER, the fact that patients are expected to allow nursing students and interns/residents to sit in on appointments, perform procedures, etc. is the reason I would rather die than ever go to another teaching hospital. I went to a psychiatric "hospital" where I was regularly pressured/forced to let students and volunteers observe and interact with me (I'm talking about you, Weill-Cornell Presbyterian). Even though it's been 10 years since I was forced to let a student or volunteer see me at my weakest, I am about to start crying due to my PTSD. Since then, I've only been to one hospital where students sat in on procedures, etc., and I felt really supported and respected by the general surgeon. This is because, after he brought in a med student with no warning and then had to give me some privacy so I could cry, he APOLOGIZED for bringing in the student and said the receptionist was supposed to give me a form on which I could state whether or not someone could be brought in to observe my procedure. The fact that the hospital, Lahey Medical Center, has a policy that a patient can withhold that sort of consent without being pressured is why I'm willing to see that specific surgeon again if necessary.

  • @sadem1045
    @sadem1045 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

    If a patient or their healthcare proxy does not provide consent, the "pelvic exam" is R*PE. It's that simple.

    Yes trauma, no follow up, I don’t think it would have helped because my provider was the trauma. I had a non medicated birth because I have a phobia of needles. My provider watched me work through the pain of a difficult birth and then when I started hemorrhaging she held a needle of pitocin against my leg and said I would die if I didn’t consent. I was intermittently unconscious and could not legally consent. She ended up injecting it anyways. The pitocin didn’t work. She then gave me cytotec, which also didn’t work. She threw her hand up in the air and said it was my fault and left me bleeding out on the table. The moment she was out of the room a nurse charged the bed and said I had to empty my bladder. She carried me to the toilet and back. She then massage my uterus and had another nurse hold my baby at my chest to start nursing. Within 20 minutes my bleeding was down to normal and I was fully conscious again. The provider strolled back in about an hour later and proclaimed it was a good thing I finally saw reason and accepted the pitocin. I saw the nurse that saved my life flinch so hard. I have since met with a different OB/GYN to go over my delivery and how to prevent it in the future. She recommended home births so that I could control who was attending me. I’m due tomorrow with my next baby and I’m so happy that my midwife has a strong plan in place to deal with emergencies that are tailored to me.
