Flathead Ford Power Slots with the CNC Mill
Here's another job that we do more precisely on our Prototrak DPM3 CNC mill, the cutting of power slots on flathead engines. The setup of the block on the mill actually takes longer to do than the milling procedure. Don't forget to 'Click' and SUBSCRIBE! This is the new fiatnutz channel.

มุมมอง 1.8K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Now, here is a solution that you just won't see shops doing, we go the BBC intake manifold in to resurface and decided to do in on the resurfacer using a rotary table. The rotary table gave us access to rotate the manifold until it was level and made for a very solid fixture. Watch the team at Costa Mesa R&D Automotive Machine Shop do what they do best, bringing unique solutions to the engine r...
Lotus 907 Main Bearing Girdle Modification
มุมมอง 2.7K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's what separates the engine builder from the engine assemblers, and yeah... there's no app for this. We are rebuilding an Jensen Healey engine for a client and he brought this set of main bearings in with the tangs on the wrong side. Where most people would ask for the correct set of bearings, we simply modified the block girdle to make them fit. This is the new FIATNUTZ channel, don't for...

Abarth SE018 Biposto Build Update 10-22-17

Finally get to mounting the nose section to the chassis. Yea!!! Used a couple of 2x4's to center the nose to the rest of the body, then cut the radiator opening and glassed in a couple of high density foam bolster block to make the lower attachment points. Had to modify the door hinges with a piece of material that will act as the lower Dzus fastener mounts. All in all, about 6 hours of work fo...

Back out to El Mirage for another attempt to break the 217mph record, only did 194mph today. Where the course was located was full of soft spots and for high horsepower cars, it was not conducive to a fast run. The poor driver said that he nearly spun the car four time. Speed sensors show the rear wheels were 15mph faster four time during the run... Oh well, there's the always next month... Thi...

Lotus Europa Weber Intake Manifold Pour #2

Our second pour for the Lotus Europa dual Weber intake manifold was a lot more successful than the one yesterday. Making the runner core pieces was still giving us some problems, but we got enough good ones made to do the pour. Interesting vid. Guessing that's a EL (61") knucklehead cylinder by lack of oil holes. The missing thing here is TORQUE PLATES. Even a cast iron cylinder, and especially one being blown out for a sleeve, needs that simulated stress that only torque plates (I even install the exact head and base gaskets to be used). This opinion will undoubtedly have mostly dissenters, but most people simply don't HAVE torque plates, or don't want to take the time to deal with them. In his defense, it'll probably be ok in a EL. This guy is providing a valuable service here for folks like us who actually RIDE our old bikes. We're stuck using old, reworked junk like this, while hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands of pristine vintage cylinders languish away in boxes and milk crates, put there by hoarders, looking to build that old bike up day, only to have their grandkids eventually toss the parts, ignorant of the treasure they are holding.

Speed and feed both seem excessive. I think these engines started life as a van engine, Bedford CF. I worked on one JH which had snapped its cam belt, and worked at a Chrysler/Talbot dealer in the UK when the Lotus Sunbeam was current.

There is a second oil hole to the push rods, it has a plug in it. You remove adjustment screw to drill through. Was there some reason why this was not shown?

Wouldn't it be better to place the block in an oven to heat expand before sleeve insertion? By hammering don't you risk damaging the sleeve coating and therefor risk long-term galvanic corrosion?

I don't understand why you made rough cuts for finish? Why not write it or move the block so your boring bar is only 0.200 above the part before starting the cut? It looked like a third or more of cut time was spent dropping on the Y axis at cut speed just to start each cut. Cutting plunge speed? If you want the tightest possible fit by hand, wouldn't it work better to travel at 1/4 the speed or even less? Leaving it rough will need a bigger hole for it to fit. A super slow cut and a shiny surface could be smaller and still fit nicely. My preference is a slight interference fit. Warm the block up to 80/90 degrees and sleeves in the freezer. Not a great difference but should slide in and out freely at this temperature. Locking in a second or two after placing it. Torque plate and finish hone liners, especially nicasil lined aluminum.
