"Balanced Run" How I adjust "Jayne Ellen" on the fly
New Haven Sharpie "Jayne Ellen" Sailing in light air with falling tide.
I show how I adjust mast rake to change weather helm while sailing.
This sail I keep centerboard at about 6" down. This gave me about a 16" draft. Lowering centerboard will also change helm. The tide was falling and almost out.

      Still love this boat. I know of no other boat design that would allow me to sail in narrow 1 to 2 foot deep creeks where I live. I have installed a new sole out of Ipe’ . Relocated all of the lead ballast more aft and out to the chine. Did not have a lot of time on the water this fall for testing.

      Jayne Ellen is still on the hard. I am making adjustments to the mast step. I got a free Sunfish and have been sailing that with two other boats. Hope to have sharpie in water very soon. About two months left in my sailing season. Plan on taking some detailed video of the mast step if it would help anyone else with free standing mast.

    I am sure you have worked this out by now, but for other viewers at 0:22 (and 2:37) you should have backed the rudder. The boat was slowly drifting backwards (pulling the sail across the centreline made you go backwards faster!) so the rudder steers in reverse. If you had backed the rudder, the bow would have come away from the wind, the sail would have filled and you would have sailed away nicely. Nice boat by the way.

    I noted the video’s year was 2014, I don’t know if your still receiving messages from TH-cam? I’m considering building or buying a sharp under 24 foot. I’m looking at one I saw in Port Townsend, a Sam Devlin design 18 foot, easily trailered which is good for me. I’m interested in a little more info about your boat and would you recommend it “sharpy” type hull to others? Another consideration is I’m an old sailer (70) looking for a trailerable boat with easy and forgiving handling.

      Spar-Time Boat Works I sail around Topsail Island. I have just had Rotator cuff surgery and most likely will not be sailing much this year. You should check out the wooden boat shows in NC and SC. The Beaufort and Cape Fear Community College are in the spring. The next big one is in Georgetown, SC. It will have around 75 boats. You should trailer your boat down. This is a great show. Check them out. Where are you located?

      No skeg. Only her long centerboard and hard chines. The centerboard is used with very little draft. The boat must always have the leeward chine down.

    Another excellent video of a rare traditional working sharpie, thanks! What is the "adjustable mast foot control'? Can you move the mast step?

    • @Bigtplease
      @Bigtplease 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      tilroh yes I can increase or decrease weather helm on the fly, by adjusting the rake of the mast. The mast foot is inside a car that can be moved fore and Aft by a threaded rod. Also I can adjust the pivot of the centerboard fore and aft 13". By making adjustments I can sail in 12" of water with out any centerboard.

    • @tilroh
      @tilroh 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Being able to adjust the mast rake is brilliant, especially on a boat with no jib to balance the helm. My Sharpie's step is adjustable but only with the mast out. I've never heard of a centerboard's pivot point being adjustable and would love to see how you did it. Could you do a video of Jayne Ellen's details? I'm sure lots of people would be interested. Looking fwd to your next video. Thanks, Mack

  • @zonzeven

    Why don't you have a jib ?

    • @Bigtplease
      @Bigtplease 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have one. They didn't use one back in the 1900's. I do not like it. Have to rake the mast aft and it does not run any better. I try not to reinvent the wheel.
