Beatties was a cracking shop when i was a kid.

My best memory was buying a 7"single or an album from Impulse record shop. Happy days when life was easier.

In Ireland, 405 line television did not last long. When Telefis Eireann (RTE 1) began in 1961, they broadcasted on 405 lines. Then in 1964, they began 625 Line transmissions (even though the UK started 625 line transmission in 1964 also, it wasn't readily available until the late 60's/early 70's). I think RTE could have started with 625 line transmission from the very start, if people who had television sets along the coast of Ireland and in the Border regions of Ireland where they could pick up BBC and IBA transmissions. RTE discontinued 405 line transmissions in 1978 for most of the country, except one transmitter in Co.Donegal. This was turned off in 1982. However, I was surprised to see that Ireland still used VHF transmissions for 625 Line Colour services. The first UHF transmitter was at Cairn Hill, Co.Longford and began in 1978. I find it strange that VHF signals could broadcast 625 Line Colour.

My great great grandfather had schizophrenia, he heard voices threatening his son and his daughter He was nuts and couldn’t sleep or eat and they told him to hurt people but he knew he wasn’t going to ever get well. He took his own life in Weston in 1887, September 6th. He wrote diaries and he did sketches. He was a monster and he was wild, his name was Stephen Burns. I believe he is buried there on the property as there is a cemetery there. Nobody has found a headstone if there is one.

Thanks for this, Liz was a great announcer and nice to see, as always, some 'Bertie Bassett-era' STV stuff. Many moons ago, someone uploaded another STV closedown with Liz. Before closedown, there was an extra programme from Canada called Bates (sp?) Car. The uploader stated the short show looked at using manure to make a car run better. After the extra programme, it went to the clock and in-vision closedown with Liz audibly struggling to keep herself completely free from giggling! She said: "Don't say we are not educational on Scottish"! I wish I could find it again, it was great :)

Looks like they turned a bunch of midgets from an insane asylum loose with hammers.

The picture quality reminded me of early colour TV receivers. I saw this on a 43 inch TV.

Going thro this sure brings back the memories. I lived in West Mains from about 1957. Moved to Ayrshire around 1975. I certainly saw lots of changes but what me made me write this was the image of the covered arcade. I bought a watch in the jewellers there in 1980 just before we moved to Canada, and that was a long time ago. The few times I've been back I found it a very depressing place

How can this be a recording of 405 line tv as that system was only black & white. (though yes the BBC & ITV did do tests of 405 colour in the 50's and 60's)

This is so complicated, I think I will stick with black and white instead. Who needs colour TV anyway?

Just for the record ..... this is not a recording off BBC-1 Scotland. I have checked our archives and on that night BBC 1 Scotland ended as usual with the Scottish News Headlines and Scottish Weather. The London announcer would not have been heard.

Did the test card come on after closedown? I wasn't sure if the IBA test card was still being used at this point on ITV.

I remember growing up as a kid and going to the original Victors chip shop right at the tunnel as it was for a bag of chips for 50p

I was brought up here in the late 50's. Was a great place then, lots of green, open spaces. Not sure what it's like now.
