Christians, saved by grace through faith in Jesus, can listen to aggressive music without compromise. But that doesn't mean we can listen uncritically. Let's assess these songs through a biblical lens, and in the process, sharpen our metal!

Lyrics:
I hear the cry of a dying world
So let your light bring the life we've been
fighting for
These are the eyes of a broken man
I see the fire that inspires us to hope again
O come Emmanuel and ransom your captive sons
There is one who can fight through the fog in the holy sea
and let the light leads us right to our destiny
O come Emmanuel with power and righteousness
'Cause we were lost, dead in our selfish ways
But now the time is come so tonight we sing
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel!
Shall come to thee so we will
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel!
Shall come to thee, O Israel
So come to us, O Key of David
Come to us, O Lord of Mine
Come to us, desire of a nation
Come to us, wisdom from on high
See us through the darkness
The shadow of the King
I hear the cry of a dying world
So let your light bring the life we've been fighting for
These are the eyes of a broken man
I see the fire that inspires us to hope again
O come Emmanuel deliver us from the grave
Come and save us the ones who believed in our ignorance
and from the blood come restore us to innocence
O come Emmanuel I can hear creation cry
And every eye will see
Every mind believe
There was a mighty king
Ascend to the throne tonight
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel!
Shall come to thee so we will
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel!
Shall come to thee, O Israel
The time is now!
Take your victory!
Bring redemption!
Take your victory!
Tonight we sing!
Rejoice! (Rejoice!)
Rejoice! (Rejoice!)

Great rendition of a classic Christmas hymn Some people say screaming and loud guitars can't be used for the glory of God But, it's the same Holy Spirit-inspired lyrics as the original I don't get it People are too legalistic
@@ModRockfan1992 I wouldn't call it inspired in the same way the Bible was, but I think I get where you're going hah
@MetalSharpensMetal True haha The Bible itself is another level of inspiration
This is an incredible video man... I've never been much of a lyrical person, but I decided to dive into the meaning of this song a few months ago because the Polyester Bear line always caught my attention - now this song never fails to bring tears to my eyes and it's easily one of my top 10 VOLA songs. from what I've gathered, that line and the whole second verse are about the family picturing what a straight forward life would have been like with a healthy child. Bringing him a polyester bear on the third floor references the parents dreaming of giving the baby a teddy bear directly after his birth on the third floor of the hospital, as many parents (including mine) do and have done. "dream of cellophane" is basically what you said in terms of toys and I believe them imagining having a baby shower - then waking up in ball and chain is them snapping back into reality. I believe most of the song up until the bridge is sung from the perspective of Damian being hooked up to a ventilator and the parents praying he will make it out alive, before the "ravens come out tonight" and the funeral bells drop in during the outro to send him off... absolutely devistating. The chorus feel more like it could be the parents grieving after the fact, but VOLA like to switch time frames and perspectives in all of their songs so I wouldn't be surprised if there are a bunch of different angles here as well. Keep it up man ;) amazing stuff!!!
I appreciate the thoughts, I think it makes a lot of sense that there was some brief time in the hospital together before the end. Just so tragic. Thanks for the kind words! It looks like you've got some exciting stuff happening on your channel as well, so I'll keep an eye on it.
My band does comedic rock/metal/party folk but we are all prog fans, could not believe how good this band and song was when I first heard it
Epic
This is the best song review by a talking Christmas tree that I have ever seen. Merry Christmas to you and your family bro!
😂Merry Christmas! I have a greater appreciation for what my evergreen friends go through each December
Great song...great band !
I only listen to the instrumental version lol
For all metal or just these guys?
@MetalSharpensMetal usually these guys. If I find the riffs to be nice but the lyrics bad then I'll listen to the instrumental
@ExodiumPlays fair enough. I like the vocals as another instrument in most of these songs, but I get wanting to avoid certain things
Messengers and constellations will always be two of much favorite albums. Redemption is probably my favorite song of theirs. I wish I would have known about them sooner. I'm up from the next county over from where they're from.
Oh sweet, I bet you could get over to one of the Christmas shows they do in their hometown!
This song is like both a dream and reality for me. I thought the love that my ex wife and I had was real, but in the end it was just a long and painful dream and none of it was real...
Sorry to hear that man, I hope you can move on and heal by God's grace.
This album is flawless
LOVED watching your reaction to this for possibly (?) the first time. Definitely in my top 5 songs. Thanks for doing it!
Thanks brother! It's way up there for me now too.
Love the lyrics, but the music is not my thing... Check out the song O Come Emmanuel (the one foretold) by Blood Thirsty
Oh I think I heard that once, gotta listen again! Timely you mentioned O Come Emmanuel since that's my next week video, but you might not care for the music in that one either ha.
Gather the family around the ol' yule log with your ugly Christmas sweaters and cups of hot cocoa... and blast this banger to oblivion. Hail the Lowborn King.
😂😂❤
August burns red has a great metal Christmas album
Indeed, they are the kings of that stuff!
The only Santa song I'll accept is one written about Arius and Nicea. "Ho Ho Heretic" indeed.
😂😂
Great video! I 98% agree with the list 😂 A few personal honorable mentions I love that aren't all classics but still great bangers 12 Days of Christmas - Reliant K Carol of the Bell Medley - The band JAREN His Favorite Christmas Story - Capital Lights I'm Getting Nuttin' for Christmas - Reliant K Christmas Truce - Sabaton The Wind - Demon Hunter Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Ella Fitzgerald
I forgot to add Memories in the Attic - Convictions
I'll have to check some of these out!
I think I know what's coming next week!
Shhhh
I'm devastated. I said Jingle Bell Rock when I meant Rocking Around The Christmas Tree, specifically in the scene from Home Alone. I may never recover from this, and I can only imagine how little you care...
Being at a store like Target and hearing the line “fall on your knees” is pretty epic.
Bro YES. Sometimes it's enough to make me think "I didn't expect to be ushered into glory while buying tomato sauce."
I think a lot of people in the comments are misunderstanding the whole point of questioning support of/listening to the music when operating your life through the christian lens. I loveee the music and the raw emotion and talent of the writing/creativity/lyricism/uniqueness/etc. …BUT, as someone who wishes to follow Christ as fully as possible and avoid influences of sin/evil, I had to take a step back and think about what is really going on with this band. Regardless of the human experience of heartbreak/sex/depression, the band openly states they worship an ancient deity that offered success for them in exchange for worship. This is deeply problematic for anyone who follows the God of the Bible. The very first commandment states to have no other gods than He. And that statement means many things practically, but at face value, you have to be concerned with consuming music that is for worshipping this other deity regardless of what it may represent to the band. We have to take it for what it is presented as, not as a fictional/metaphorical thing. The devil is the master of deception and manipulation, I want to be wrong about the band being influenced by less than holy spirits, but so far it hasn’t shown to be so.
You nailed it! I'm glad some people here get what I was going for. Good point that we need to take things at face value, even if we don't know all their inner thoughts. At what point do the excuses "I was only joking!" or "I didn't mean it like *that!" not work anymore? Reminds me of Proverbs 26:18-19
Didn't hear you mention it (If you did my bad), but Lowborn by Wolves at the gate might be the best Christmas metal song of all time. Beats everything off of midnight clear in my opinion.
...wait 1 week 😉
Hey, we have a Review Request, we're a newer Christian Metalcore band from Southern CA, and not sure if you're into the heavy Christmas covers (like ABR's) but we just released our heavy version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and I'd love for you to check it out and let us know what you think! God Bless -- > th-cam.com/video/ki8QdBTk2T4/w-d-xo.html
TH-cam hid this comment from me for a bit, so I just now saw it! I would have mentioned this version in my Christmas hymns tierlist video if I knew earlier, but I updated the description with your link anyway. The breakdownsplosion at the end was great haha.
Ok but what song?
Lol, I just described like 70% of their music I guess. Song is Obzen, I linked the short to my full length review.
Who cares if their christians? They make incredible music. If you listen closely they have some roots in Christianity. But again, who cares? Their songs are absolutely ridiculous. If you listen to II's Drumeo interview he admits that he studied gospel drummers. So there is definitely christian undertones in his playing. Last, everyone's Sleep Token experience is different. What you take away from each song can be totally different from everyone else's.
Not sure if you're speaking more towards the video or comment section, but I'm under no illusion that these guys are Christians. Mentioning Eden, God, or gospel drumming isn't the standard.
I love this band never knew how anointed metal could be
I always point people to these guys, Convictions, and War of Ages for great Christian metal
Bro, could you please make a review video of “Perfect Soul” of Spiritbox?
I'll add it to the list! If you haven't checked out my video for Jaded you might be interested. I'm sensing similar meanings between those 2 songs.
@MetalSharpensMetal Thanks, I saw the video for Jaded.
@MetalSharpensMetal Thanks for making reviews on this side of music.
@@noegarcia.5766 thanks for watching! I have a lot planned for the next month and next year too, so I'm not sure when I'll get to Perfect Soul. One of the drawbacks of not being a normal reaction channel, but I want these videos to be relevant for longer than the month surrounding a release.
@@MetalSharpensMetal I admire that a Christian makes reviews based on the scriptures. I am Christian too, hence I would like to have an insight on the music that I hear. I love Courtney's talent and the talent that this band has.
Fellow believer and VOLA fan here. Appreciated your insights on the track. We experienced a loss last year now have a newborn “Wren” in reference to this song.
Thank you for sharing, friend
Tomas is very philosophical and if you watch a lot of his videos you will see it. He has also said something on the lines of not being gloomy in daily life, but it fits the theme of Meshuggah. Personally, as an older person who has been through stuff, the way Meshuggah criticizes society is a comfort. Humans deserve better (see also "Stifled").
He does seem like a funny guy from the videos I've seen. Still waiting on that beer...
@13:51 - which is why abortion is such a terrible evil (except when done as a last measure to save a mother's life). That destroyed human life, already completely written in its DNA forming it, only has that one chance, and never again.
I think YT shadow banned your comment but I just now saw it. I totally agree with you, except on one point: there's no reason to preemptively commit that act to help the mom. The baby might need to be delivered early, but never unalived first. Thanks for stopping by!
glad u did vola and especially this song great video and sorry for your loss stay strong u and ur famiily
Glad you checked it out, and thanks for the kind words!
Vola is completely new to me. Hard for me to think of a more emotive lyrical topic than what they’ve covered there. Thank you for sharing your story so honestly - I have prayed and will pray for ongoing healing for you and your family
Vola is an incredible band. And I appreciate the prayers, friend.
I agree and disagree with what you said but I do feel like this song is written in the Second person, as both someone who enjoys the bloodshed and depravity and the other who critiques it again going back to the equilibrium. One interesting point is that our innate desire to sin overcomes our desire to do good deeds so it portrays a constant struggle of allowing our wicked nature overcome what is ‘acceptable’ or ‘good’ but I do agree that Tomas does lean into the nihilistic POV of accepting what is happening but hating it which is of course, no bueno.
I was trying to follow this until you mentioned Tomas, did you comment on the wrong vid by chance? Haha
@ oh shoot I completely did! LMAOO I was trying to comment this under your Meshuggah-Obzen reaction lol that’s embarrassing. Not sure how it ended up on this vid
@@BOATIE141 haha all good. Ironically there are some similar themes in this song I think. Feel free to paste the comment on the other vid if you want, but I think I'm tracking. Interesting idea about one half of the person liking the violence and the other half hating it...
@ will do, also just subscribed today I really appreciate that there’s someone out there who actually listens to and enjoys the music while also capable of being critical of the content. As Christians I feel we may have become too sheltered especially with heavier music (which the grandfathers of Metal, Sabbath, are Christians) which has been taken out of context lyrically. Of course there are bands who straight up support satanic worship which I wholeheartedly agree we should stay away from. Anyways I’m rambling now but keep up the awesome content
@@BOATIE141 haha thanks for that man! Ya, I want this to be a place where people learn how to use their Christian worldview in a deeper way, you nailed it.
VOLA is so rad. I am glad you found them!
So flipping rad. The new album slaps too.
@@MetalSharpensMetal I agree. I found them about eight years ago, when I was searching for more clean vocal style djent music in the vein of Skyharbor and Tesseract. As a guitarist/bassist, I have to say the addition of Adam Lanzi to the band has been amazing. He has great chops on the skins.
@@scotttill3847 Adam definitely got me interested in the band at first. And man, Skyharbor had some energy! Did you ever listen to the band Being?
@@MetalSharpensMetal Yeah, I listen to Being, too bad they only released one LP. Seriously man, I am a Daniel Tompkins fan boy. I get just about everything that he is featured in.
Witness was definitely bittersweet. Inside Your Fur hit me like a truck after losing my grandma and then my dad in 2023. As for what you and your family have gone through, my wife and I offer our prayers that those wounds are healed. Thank you for sharing that.
I really appreciate that. God has definitely been faithful through the healing process 😊 I pray the same for you.
You should react to Reformed - Smoke of their torment
Does that one have your favorite lyrics or instrumentals on the EP? I do need to get around to them and remembered Martyr's chorus standing out to me too.
@@MetalSharpensMetal Martyr's chorus is definitively the best most catchy indeed, but lyrically both Smoke and Reprobate are the ones that pull me back to listen to the EP again
@@Adrianinked nice, noted. I'll have to move them up on the list
Listen to anything before Chaosphere the singer deviates in pitch more and also originally the singer was the second guitarist and helped write some of the songs Sickening off of None E.P. is my favorite song Jens wrote before Marten Hagstrom joined the band .
Sounds good! So Jens was still doing vocals, but also played guitar back then?
The black one who has fallen from the sky is actually Ancalagon, also called Black One, a drain created by Morgoth that was so huge that when he fell from the skies in the battle facing the Valar, he destroyed a whole mountain peak. Remember, this battle featured elves at the height of their power, Satan itself and also the Valar, who are like arch angels. It literally changed continents shapes
That is so absurdly epic. I love it.
Blind Guardian is a deep ocean to dive into. And Then There Was Silence is a good start. And At the Edge of Time is a good album to start with.
I've already started diving today and it's been awesome so far! Thanks for the recos
And then there was silence is a terrible way to start. I love the song, but just no
I have to admit for a second I was confused when your names weren't christian.
lol
Thank you for the review my guy!!!!!!!!!!! Appreciate you giving a small artist a chance
Hansi is a Christian,or at the very least has expressed tremendous appreciation for Christianity
@@joshuascott3428 nice! I hope so
They have quite a few songs that are either straight up biblical (Precious Jerusalem, Another Holy War, Sadly Sings Destiny) or brushes on the topic through a historical character (Punishment Divine, Age of False Innocence).
@@rujasu7731 thanks, I'll check those out!
Hey! Do you have a playliste I could follow?? On Spotify?
Kinda embarrassing, but I don't use Spotify haha. There are several playlists on the channel based on genre and lyrics, are you looking for something different though?
@@MetalSharpensMetal Was looking for a whole playlist where I can pick and choose songs to add to my own, where I know they are "safe" to listen to. I find that a lot of metal music needs to be analyzed before you can listen. Also I have found Christian Metal where the theology differs to mine. I like metal, but I can find very little that checks all boxes: Not satanic/demonic/very dark, Christian, not differing too much from my protestant theology, sounding great and good lyrics...
@@MetalSharpensMetal First i listened a lot to Bring Me The Horizon untill someone showed me that they are problematic, now I am listening to Sleep Token, which you showed me in a video is problematic. So I'm kinda close to giving up on Metal music.
@@Viktor14485 oh dang man, gotcha. I'm glad you're weighing these things out and seeking truth in what you consume. I have a playlist called "Christian Lyrics and Bands" and while I wouldn't whitewash everything in that list, it's fairly solid. Some will differ from my theology a bit, and some will have differing theology today compared to what they wrote in these songs. But there's a lot to love. Best Christian bands today are Bloodlines, Convictions, Wolves At The Gate, War Of Ages, and Intercessor imo. Extol, Becoming The Archetype, and Hope For The Dying are amazing as well. Old Thrice is jam packed with great stuff. I'll be featuring more of these in the future. You may not agree with everything they say personally, but they generally write songs that I think are great food for Christians. If you have other questions let me know.
@@MetalSharpensMetal Thanks and cool! I already listen to Convictions and I think they make great music. Been since I'm not a Catholic I gotta filter through the songs as well... But, will be checking out your playlist ;)
Andrew and I rather enjoyed it. We did try listening to song at 1.25 speed and realllly enjoyed it! It just felt like it needed that little boost of speed
😂

Hey again! Yes sir, I read the lyrics for that one and instantly added it to the list 🤘
sad they walked away from Jesus after claiming to have found faith in Him. Now they blaspheme Him.
Sad indeed, I wish they had been in a better environment during those formative years.
WOLVES AT THE GATE - DEADMAN, HERALDS, AWAKEN, COUNTERFIT, DRIFTER!! ALL BIG SONGS
It’s a metaphor. Everything isn’t always this serious man, but go ahead and overanalyze a song and shove “your god” in our faces and tell us how righteous it is. And if you truly knew what real abuse is like, you wouldnt get on a high horse about it. I forgot you did everything the right way, and anyone else that doesn’t needs to be insulted.
Hey man. It sounds like you aren't really looking for a conversation, but I hope you'll be able to sift through and find something of value here. God bless.
