Wow! $72 dollars for a headstone in 1908. Can you imagine how much that is in today’s money?
Yes - $2470.32.
I paid $1450.00 for a flat headstone for my mother. Basic polished red granite, her name, birth and death dates, some scroll around the edges. So there is your answer.
A 1908 Dollar is $34.31 today. Calculate prices accordingly.
Two things: 1. A Bible costing $3.89 in 1908 would be equivalent to over $133.00 dollars today. 2. Richard Nixon’s father bought the family’s California home from a Sears catalog and put it together himself. Bonus!: I bought a Bullworker isometrics exercise device from a Sears catalog many eons ago.
That's a good point about the bible. I am convinced a similarly bound bible would cost at least $100 today ... We have one, those tomes were huge!
@ The devotion to their faith of those of modest means who bought such an expensive item is impressive, too.
I would be willing to watch a video or a series of videos of you going through the entire book showing what all was available in something like that back in the day.
I'm sure it would be fun to go through the whole thing! But it would take a long time, the catalog is over 1000 pages.
Those prices seem exuberant for that time period! Pretty expensive stuff.
I think they could demand higher prices based on convenience, quality, and bundling orders. Lots of customers living in remote areas had no access to many of these goods.
When you look at the prices remember 4 cents bought whet one dollar buys today. It’s called Inflation .
Which makes those prices for the headstones and bibles more than I would spend in today’s money. Those headstones were pretty expensive!
my grandparents house was i believe a Sears kit home, I know my grandfather built he house himself. They lived in the heart of Ohio and Sears was founded here. A lot of people don’t know that Dayton Ohio, was a key location in the 1800s to come and buy products from all around the world, and it could’ve very well been sears, I remember my grandmother ordering a thimble of thread for her sewing machine, and Sears delivering it to her clear across town for free. those were definitely different times, I remember getting potato chips from Charlie’s chips, and them being delivered to the front porch, and the tin cans still being warm from where they had just made the potato chips that morning. My grandfather worked at Frigidaire, he was a engineer and designer, he designed the seals that seal the refrigerator, any designed the old ice trays where you pulled the handle up in the middle to break the ice cubes, they used to call him the iceman, long before the hitman was called the iceman 🧐😬🤫🇺🇸
Would you do a video. May be a long one of going through and showing like a presentation video every page of that. I find this really interesting
You're the second person to suggest this. Let me look into it.
Down in southeastern Oklahoma, back in the 1930s and 40s, my grandfather and uncle trapped fox, raccoon, etc, prepared the hides, packed them in gunny sacks and shipped them to Sears Roebuck in Kansas City through the U S mail. Sears would send back a check. My great uncle would order car parts for his Model T from Sears.
That's really interesting. What were they used for? Jackets and hats, or something else?
@EasyGenie Yes, jackets, hats, and such. Furs and hides from animals were durable and warm. Of course, there was cotton, flax, silk, and wool. Before synthetic petroleum based products were developed that's what people used.
History and stuff like that’s really really, really cool. I really appreciate you for taking your time. God bless you and yours.
Glad you enjoyed seeing this old replica Sears catalog! I agree it's really cool, my only complaint is the text was so small.
I'm going to be in my local tax (theft) assesors office this week. I'm going to do a foia on how many Sears houses are in town!
My friend has a Sears and Roebuck house 😂I believe it was from 1908.
Maybe from this very catalog!
Hey look. Bibles and tombstones. Great video
It was the Amazon of 1908!

Numerous people over 15 years of searching for my 4th great grandfather and his father. Using this I found over 50 documents and a handful had the correct names. Solved an amazingly hard brick wall. Wills, guardianship, estate papers!!! Takes time but so worth it.
That is incredible. I'm so glad this worked for you.
I am from the town and The Sherman Inn is a point of pride for the town.
Lmao nigga died from eating paint
That appears to be a 1920-1930 model box alarm. It’s not cast iron as older models and made out of Herculite.
Looking at the number plate, the style is early 1900s. It's basically been working for 100 years +-10 which is rare for any technology, let alone one exposed to the elements 365 days per year.
What are genealogy charts?
Charts to track your ancestry. See easygenie.org for a sample of what we do.
Thank you so much for this detailed video appreciate it so much. Your videos are all so concise and informative. I have many ancestors I want to search for this way. A few Loveless/Lovelace. Glover, Wiggins, Herring, Bryan, Smith, Abernathy...
You are so welcome! Hope you can find the answers about your ancestry.
These old plat(?) maps have been invaluable to me in solving a couple mysteries. I've used NY & Fed censuses to chart all kinds SES patterns on these maps, figured out if people were really neighbors (sometimes enumerator turned around and went in a completely diff direction rather than finish a street (was it washed out? ?Close to lunch?) which would not be evident on the census for two families suddenly next to each other when you expected to find several relatives next to each other on the census. (The land ownership did not change, only the census takers path). If you are lucky, you will find 2 of these maps made a few years apart (Madison & Chenango Co had these land maps made 2x in the mid 19th century.)
Whenever I read old census records, I wish they had implemented street names. Sometimes you see enumerators adding hand-written annotations to track the streets but it's inconsistent. I also see numbers without another data which I believe could be street numbers or the total count for a certain area.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful old house. What a lovely treat.
thanks for the rhyme vid

Seems to be based off of 1960s western cowboy movies. It looks very stereotypical. Hopefully AI doesn’t train with old film media but takes old sources about fashion, architecture, and history into account.
Good sleuthing but how does this prove that "Uncle Albert" was correct? Are there other photos with which you can cross-reference yours? The truth of the statements written by someone is not dependent on knowing the identity of the writer - they still could be incorrect. It's a great find, and an important one but it doesn't prove the identification to be correct but at least it does indicate that the writer could have firsthand knowledge of the identities of most if not all of the people. As an aside, your story reminds me of a similar one in my family - my aunt had a photograph and she handed it to her aunt and asked her to write down the names of the people in the photograph on the photograph while she prepared dinner. Much to my aunt's horror, when she returned, she saw that her aunt had indeed written down the names of each person- in red ink- right across their faces! And this was the original photograph with no known copies. Moral of the story: watch what you say because her aunt did exactly what was asked of her. And - watch everything - always!
Candacraig House shown on the map once belonged to Billy Connolly, and his good friend Robin Williams was his guest there quite often.

My Uncle bought one of these houses in about 1924. My father and uncle built the house and it was rented out. When it was delivered it was dropped off on the sidewalk. In about 1974 one of my brother’s bought the house.
What a great story! Was it a good house in terms of materials and design?
Good system for file organising but as a historian I caution you in: 1) the document scanner ix300 etc are not appropriate for old photos. They bend and damage them. At least use an Epson v600 or similar flatbed to protect the images. You are damaging the paper and ink. 2) The ideal to write notes is good, but not directly on the back of the photograph. Again, this damages the old photographs in impressions and ink. It is easy to just place a card/paper underneath it in your archive sleeve. Well meaning archivists in the past damaged irreplaceable photographs by making these errors. Lastly, I would not throw out any photographs. You never know what use they might have years from now. Save them and all your old negatives, as negatives are more important.
I didn't even try to look. It's a USELESS idea even for someone just getting started. It leaves out what a new user needs. It's hard for me to believe Ancestry is getting a lot of new customers or keeping the ones they have with their new set-up of charges.
I think people have had enough of ever-more expensive subscriptions. Ancestry is losing old subscribers, and need fresh blood to keep the profits rolling to its private equity owners (Blackstone Inc.)
This is kinda crazy
Most likely a browser cache issue

What program do you use to keep and work on your tree, on your computer? What is the cost? I have a MAC.
I use Reunion for Mac. I don't like the interface, but it meets my needs for genealogy software including keeping my data private.
What harm, exactly, are youth afraid of? The main issue about one's lineage is that you want it to be preserved for posterity, and you want to share your common lineage with distant relatives who have common roots. If anything. You want your tree - at least for the generations who have passed - to be common knowledge, not some sort of secret. Much the same can be said for DNA, except there's the issue of it potentially being used corruptly by law enforcement.
@@FrankStanley-j5y I'm inclined to agree with you as i only became interested in the last 10 years but my son isn't interested nor is my sister other than what results I find. I have put a lot of effort into finding and verifying my research and the worst thing for me would for it to be lost for ever. As long as I restrict the data online to my grandparents generation I am quite happy for others to access it. I don't want my research to wither on the vine when I often include little snippets of things either I or my sister know but my son's generation wouldn't. In fact I want people to copy accurate data even if they make no use of it other than fill out their records. This aspect does worry me as I'd like to see the knowledge continue. This is why I keep my Tree on Ancestry on a public setting.
