Portrait Oil Painting | Palette Color Organization
This video features a discussion about how I organize my palette - dark colors like umbers, sienna, and blue on the left, and lighter ones like titanium white, ochre, and reds pm the right side. The painting time lapse on screen is one that fits with a conversation about colors. It's an extremely vibrant portrait where I let myself get loose and experiment with some bright and vivid yellow and green mixes.

Portrait Painting 2024 Review | Goals, New App, Book Plans
มุมมอง 298วันที่ผ่านมา
Looking back at 2024, my 2nd full year of painting, my number of paintings decreased significantly compared to the 1st year. But I averaged more time on each piece. I also finally invested in some painting equipment upgrades like a real easel, large glass palette, and more of my favorite brushes. And I started some new side projects, like building an artwork catalog/transaction tracking app, an...
Portrait Painting Subjects | Keywords for Reference Images
มุมมอง 64214 วันที่ผ่านมา
Recently, I've been using AI image generation tools quite a bit to create reference photos for painting. I'll use a free tool like Google's Gemini, ImageFX, or Bing's Copilot to create a subject, then put my iPad next to my easel while I paint. I thought it might be useful to share some of the keywords I've found useful to create impressionist-style references that emphasize distinct shapes of ...
7 Minute Oil Painting Walkthrough | Nature Scenes and Light Effects
มุมมอง 66121 วันที่ผ่านมา
This portrait painting was an attempt at exploring some nature background painting in the wet on wet style Bob Ross popularized on the Joy of Painting. I also wanted to practice some light effects shining through the subject's shirt sleeve and in the tree top clearing. This was not particularly successful in this piece, but a fun attempt regardless. This figurative study of a woman with trees a...
Oil Paintings as Gifts | Drying Times and Reactions
มุมมอง 603หลายเดือนก่อน
This video features some thoughts on giving (or creating) oil paintings as gifts. I've gifted art a few times over the years, including a couple of oil paintings. One of the big factors on the painting side is drying time, especially considering the short time frame between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The featured portrait is a gift this year for my Granny of her when she was younger, - my 231s...
Portrait Painting Walkthrough | Step by Step Tutorial, Alla Prima Oil on Paper
มุมมอง 421หลายเดือนก่อน
I've done quite a few of these portrait painting walkthroughs, but this is an attempt at making my most complete step-by-step tutorial. This painting is great for this because it really aligns with all of my usual steps - perhaps the most emblematic portrait I've done. The subject is an upper torso figurative study of a woman holding a book, which is my 230th total oil painting. I'll bookmark k...
Conda 70" French Style Easel Review | Long Term Use and Modifications
มุมมอง 60หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a review for a Conda's 70 inch French style easel. I've been using it for about a year now, with around 80-85 oil paintings created on the easel. It's pretty great, especially considering the reasonable price point around $70. I have made a couple of modifications, such as a light bar across the top and a magnetic level, which I discuss in the video. Time stamps: 00:33 Art Dimensions/Si...
5 Minute Oil Painting Walkthrough | Portrait Proportions and Fixing Mistakes
มุมมอง 635หลายเดือนก่อน
This is an portrait painting that started off with a bang - I immediately messed up and had to start over. And then I fell into a bit of a trap, adjusting the body a lot, but the head only a little, causing my overall proportions to be out of balance. Fortunately for me, oil paint is very forgiving and I was able to fix it to some extent. This figurative study of a woman with trees and greenery...

So amazing 👏 🤩
Thanks for watching, I’m glad you liked it!
Looks a bot like sofia falcone
I had to google - Cristin Milioti from the Penguin? I definitely see the resemblance!
look at those eyes
I’ve definitely been working on expressive eyes over the past year - I hope that came through here!
Thank you
I’m glad the process video was useful!
What media did you choose when creating your print with finer works??
I’ve used both the Premium Giclee Regular and Bright White, and both are nice, but I like the Regular a bit better I think (fits better with different styles of art). They’re both very thick and substantial with a nice texture to them. I can’t remember if I mentioned in the video or not, but the files I use are 720 DPI 48 bit color scans, which translate really well to print.
Oh, unless you were talking about the original artwork’s medium - all of my pieces that I’ve gotten prints from are oil paintings. Most Gamblin and Utrecht oils, very small amounts of linseed oil mostly in the base outline, on Strathmore textured oil paper.
Beautiful ❤️
Thanks, I’m glad you liked it!
These are fantastic, I wish I could do this
Thanks for the kind words on these paintings! On this one in particular, from what I recall, I almost couldn’t - there was definitely a point where I wasn’t sure it was going to work. I’m glad I pushed through the rough spots though. Even though I do sometimes abandon paintings if they aren’t working (especially very early), I find more often it’s useful to try to stick to it and see what happens.
Maybe it’s a worker in the field taking a break rather than Starbucks employee. I like it
Haha I’m glad that came across! Although I didn’t really have a plan here, and it’s been a while since I did it, from what I recall there was some vague intention for like a working, sort of rugged look. Like a craft or outdoor worker, something along those lines. I appreciate you checking it out!
Awesome content mate
I appreciate the support, glad to hear you enjoyed it!
I'm glad I found and saw this video. I am trying to find my own style and the use of AI to help guide me is interesting. I don't want an AI style, but I want to use it to reach my own vision of how I want the oil painting to look. Right now I am way too tight and blend too much. So paintings like yours are very helpful. Also the time lapse is useful to know how to first start and then refine the image. Thanks for your effort in helping all of us.
I'm glad to hear you found this one helpful! If you don't mind my asking, how long have you been painting with oils? I've found that whether I intentionally tried to or not, a style just naturally seemed to grow out of the repetitions. The more I paint, the more that style takes on a life of its own independent of any references I might lean on, whether it's an AI generated image, a stock photo, or just a regular photo straight from my camera. Regardless, I've definitely found these tools to be useful in helping me get more practice putting brush to paper. Also, I definitely hear you about blending too much and on feeling too tight! I feel like most of my paintings I still have those same self-critiques. I have managed to loosen up more over the past year, but I do over-blend in almost all of them still (in my opinion). I saw a painting demo from a guy named Stephen Bauman (like 98% sure it was him) who forced himself as part of an exercise to lay down separate color squares or shapes without any blending. I think it was supposed to be purely instructional rather than finished art, but I thought it was really beautiful. I although I don't want to eliminate all blending in my paintings, I do think about that portrait often - especially when I end up over doing it!
Your process is so cool i’m obsessed
You are too kind, thank you - and happy new year to you!
@ Yes Happy New Year friend !!!
Hi there, I'm a new sub :) Love your content and you sharing your thought process and goals with every video. I learn so much from watching you paint! I love your style and think you don't give yourself enough credit. Your work is as good as any other professionals I've seen on YT. Even though you say you're new to oil painting, I think you've advance way much further then you give yourself credit for. Keep up the great work and be kind to yourself! Much love from Texas!
Thanks so much for the kind words, it means a lot - I've learned so much from watching other artists on youtube and other platforms, so I'm glad to pay it forward however I can. I try to make the types of videos that I would find useful, but I don't always know if it's as helpful to others. But seeing comments like this help me know I'm accomplishing that goal! So, thank you again for that. And happy new year to you (also from Texas)! Cheers to a great 2025
Beautiful oil painting.
I appreciate it! Happy new year to you
Brilliant job bro
Thanks for that!
underrated, my fingers hurt drawing animals imagine people
Much appreciated! I have to admit, my hands do sometimes get tired gripping the paintbrush. I usually just use oil paint that isn’t thinned at all, so sometimes I have to push the brush somewhat hard to get the look I want.
A proper review. Everyone says how good it is but it is very fustrating to use. I need to turn the recording volume up each time I use it but you can not tell what it is set at. There is an App that is suposed to show the settings but it wont connect. The App has 10K+ downloads but noty one review.
Thanks for that! Not just about the review, but for mentioning an app - I had no idea there was one. Unfortunately, it sounds like it probably doesn’t work well…but definitely good to know. I think the biggest thing for me on this mic is price vs performance and keeping in perspective relative value. I was in the market for the cheapest “good” mic I could find, so I can live with some flaws. I would like to eventually upgrade to a more expensive one with less compromises, but for now I think it’s good enough for situations where I need to move around while speaking. Otherwise, I do tend to prefer just recording directly into my iPad (sound quality and volume seems better).,
love your style! Have been binge watching your videos. New sub 😊
I’m glad you’ve enjoyed these videos! That’s really energizing from my perspective, hearing that someone enjoys and/or gets value from them. I definitely appreciate the support! If there’s ever a particular topic you’re interested in, feel free to let me know - I’ve explored other topics based on comments quite a few times in the past.
Wonderful work❤
I’m really glad you liked this one, thanks for watching the process unfold!
Deserves WAY more likes. Keep up the good work
That is very kind, thank you!
@Amdall your welcome! Though your artwork is great, seriously.
You legitimately made my day, I really appreciate it
I really want to learn how to paint. I have been doing art on paper for years, but never got around to trying paint. It’s beautiful and satisfying to watch it come together!
I appreciate the kind words! And if you’ve been thinking about painting and really want to try, I think you should dive in. For the longest time, I wanted to try painting with oils but was intimidated by the whole thing. I’m so glad I finally gave it a shot. Go for it!
Just wanted to update: The PAE show was a couple of months ago, and I was able to attend the opening. It was really cool, so glad I was able to be there with my family. There was a pre-sale portion of the event for the show's VIPs (who I think were people who paid extra to charity for the right to see the art first). To my great surprise, my painting actually sold during the pre-sale! Once the show started and I was able to see it, it already had a sold sticker on it! I certainly didn't expect that, and feel really appreciative that someone liked the piece that much. Very fun and memorable experience. Just by coincidence, this year's show happened to be in North Texas and was close enough for me to attend. Next year I believe is in the Netherlands, so no in person visit for me. But, I will still likely submit a piece! It is for a good cause, after all.
I completely forgot to mention in the video - the painting onscreen is one I painted directly from one of these AI-generated references. I believe it was using one of Google's tools, and I used all of the keywords I mention in the video (lots of emphasis on texture and light descriptors). I felt like it was a pretty good example of an oil painting that having a reference like this really helped me - more so than a standard photo image would have I think. Another thing I considered discussing, but felt like it was too far off topic - I really overworked this painting. I have a bad habit of doing that, but that's a topic I've explored in other videos. This is one where I definitely didn't know when to leave certain areas alone on this one.
I agree. They are both beautiful but I like the man portrait better. Keep up the great work! I love your work!!!
I do wish I could have entered both of them, it was a difficult decision to just go with one for sure. I appreciate the support and you checking it out! Hope you have a good holiday season!
This is absolutely beautiful 🤍
Thank you!
underrated as fuck bro- i really hope one day you get recognized for your skills :) i love it keep doing art❤
I appreciate that, thanks for the support!
Woahhh
Thanks for checking it out!
Still admire your style and lighting. Very great :)! I especially love how you use your reds in the face. That has always stood out to me in your style.
Always good to hear from you Emanuel - hope you’re doing well and your holidays are good. Thanks for the kind words about the paintings style, and especially the lighting. Good to hear when something you’ve worked on perhaps shows in paintings! Also, I hope to keep pushing those reds in the right place. I feel like sometimes I’m just guessing to some extent about placement, but I will definitely keep at it. Haha shoot enough arrows, I’ll hit the target eventually!
@ holidays are lovely so far friend. I pray the same for you and your family! Yes! The key thing is that you keep on shooting those arrows, which you do so well 😊.
Glad to hear it, and I appreciate that! Can't believe it's about to be 2025, this one really flew by
I have this microphone, but it seems they do not work at all, connected to my cam and nothing, connected to my phone and nothing, I do not know what else to do
I had some issues with mine at first too - it’s definitely not intuitive, and it’s impossible to know if it’s working without testing playback after a test recording. I’m not an expert by any means, but a few things come to mind to check: - what’s the status of the lights when it’s to a point where you think it should work? (Blue vs green on each unit) - have you tried a new charging cable for both the phone part and mic? (Both have to be charged) - anything showing up as being connected to your phone when everything is on and should be working? If worse comes to worse, I’d reach out to the seller for help. Good luck!
@Amdall thank you so much for your reply
You're welcome - good luck, I hope you're able to get it worked out
I believe that even in the lest talented artist…. There is something unique
I’m not exactly sure how to take this one, but I do agree with the principle of what you’re saying. I think people naturally develop grooves that they settle into, and those really do build a unique style over time. It’s actually one of my favorite things about following artists on social media; seeing all of those unique styles
@@Amdall you got it as I meth it
Fair enough, happy holidays to you
I admire your skills! Great!
I appreciate the kind words on the painting! Thanks for checking this one out
Rather difficult to watch because of the poor spotty paint application and brush handling using this tiny brush.
Alright then, thanks for letting me know
That's a beautiful portratit! And I had no idea it can take that long for an oil painting to dry.. But makes them all the more special, right :D
Thank you! Haha well it certainly makes for some interesting drying area solutions - I’ve definitely made use of any random shelving I can find. In all seriousness though, I have always liked the dpeth of color oils have. Although, I have to admit I don’t have much experience with other mediums to fully compare.
@@Amdall Oh I totally get that storage issue! And yeah I agree, I also think oil paintings can reflect the light like no other medium can do. I've only ever tried acrylics for paintings, but with them you have the opposite problem as they dry almost too quickly.. 😅
Did you use a reference or was this from imagination?
This was to some extent from a reference, but it has been a hundred paintings or so since, so they kind of blend together after a while. But I think the background is to some extent based on Bing’s Dall-E image generator, although I can’t remember the prompt or specifics. And I think the subject may be a royalty free Unsplash photo. I do on occasion try to flex my imagination a bit, but I almost always use some sort of reference even if it’s just for basic things. Thanks for checking the video out and for the question! I hope that gets to what you were wanting to know about this one
Looks fantastic to me!
I appreciate that! I hope more practice at painting Patton has helped over time - I think I’m due for another attempt haha
Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you! Hopefully she likes it - it’s really hard to tell from an old black and white photo if it will match her memory of how she looked. Definitely a tricky scenario, but also fun to try. I hope everything is good with you as the year wraps up!
I love your technique, beautiful ❤❤❤
Thanks for that, I’m glad you enjoyed this one!
නියමයි සුද්දා.❤️ Excellent bro
Thanks for checking out the video!
I like the style :)
Very much appreciated!
This is amazing! I can't wait to see your channel sky-rocket
Thanks for the support! I appreciate it
Thank you sir
Absolutely, I hope it helps! Is this the type of thing you were asking about on the other video? More of a step by step, longer guide style presentation
@@Amdall yea I meant step by step step I hope u will soon publish
This video is actually the step by step - it includes captions on screen around where each step starts and timestamps so you can jump to sections that are of interest: 00:13 Loose Outline 01:03 Starting with Dark Areas 01:25 Palette Organization 03:02 Blocks and Zones of Color 05:33 Building Up to Light 06:14 Eyes Using Gray Mixes 07:45 First Pass for Hair 08:19 Clothes and Fabric 10:29 Alla Prima Direct Painting 11:05 Background Colors and Blending 12:17 Experimentation in Art 13:12 Final Detailing
@@Amdall yea I meant to say more focused in the outline part:)
I’m sorry, somehow I missed the last reply! So, it sounds like a video that covers more detail on that initial step (loose outline) would be useful maybe? I had actually been thinking about something along those lines - slow down the first part where I rough out the subject’s shape and position, then wrap up the rest quickly.
I asked my cousin this it took him a minute too figure it out and his name is litterally tyson
You asked your cousin about fixing proportions in portraits? Did Tyson give you any good insights?
@Amdall no he dud not
So, what did you mean then? What were you and your cousin trying to figure out?
@@Amdall i asked him and he did not know
What did you want to know?
You can also use the storage compartments to hide your weed from your judgmental grandparents. 10/10
If I had a dollar for every time I had to say, "grandma, stay out of my Conda brand French style collapsible travel easel (with removable storage trays, light bar, and magnetic level)!" I would have zero dollars, but still it's the principle of the whole thing.
I have to say I enjoy using watercolor acrylics and oils but the forgiveness of oils are in my opinion the best thing about them
Oh yes, totally agree. I love the flexibility and the ability to just push paint around if you don’t like how something went. I don’t have experience with other types of paint, but I feel like I would missthat built-in forgiveness of oils. Which painting medium would you say is your favorite? Like with other mediums, you miss the flexibility, but you gain another cool capability? Just curious about your thoughts as it sounds like you’ve got good experience with a few.
Keep going❤ So amazing 🤩 You’re so talented 😮I love this one ☝️ 😊❤
Thank you, you are too kind! I'm glad you liked this one
can u make tutorial
Absolutely! I'm always interested in suggestions and requests when it comes to topics and presentation types. When you say tutorial, are you thinking like a step by step style video? And how long of a tutorial is the right balance between easy to consume and comprehensive enough? I'm guessing this 5 min version might be too fast, but is a 20 minute one too long? @@Amdall Yes! I meant step by step tutorials. Can you also make paintings using acrylic , Glouche, Water color, and POSTER PAINT.
Sorry, I don’t have experience with anything other than oil paint and pencils. I hope to someday get into those other mediums and paint types though. I will put together more of a step by step style video though - keep an eye out for it next week!
Hello! Just wanted to let you know I just posted a step-by-step tutorial - hopefully this is useful to you: th-cam.com/video/aIc5Zz6DRCk/w-d-xo.html
Hi, thanks so much for this video it was really helpful! I'm having trouble connecting it to my laptop, maybe I should change sth about the input and output? Could you please share your insight if it's no trouble?🙏🏻
Hello there! I’m glad to hear you found the video useful - thanks for checking it out. When you say you are connecting to your laptop, you’re trying to record video using laptop’s webcam with the mic clipped to you? Does the laptop have a USBC port, or are you using a standard USB adapter?
@Amdall Hi, I use the TRRS to TRS cable to connect the RX to my laptop, (as was instructed on Hollyland's website) and when I try to record audio for a video I'm editing in Capcut, it doesn't record on my mic. I checked the sound setting and it's the same the website instructed. Maybe I should try with a USB-C to TRS cable? Thank you SO much for your time it means a lot!
Ohhhh like an old style audio headphone jack cable? I thought I saw that in the instructions, and mine does seem to have the cables for it. But I haven't tried it as I don't actually have any devices with headphone jacks. I had to double check that sad fact, as I used to appreciate having them. But I don't think I could even test it with my current hardware, sorry to say.
Me encanta, esta precioso
Thank you! I sure appreciate it
I wanna use oil paints so bad but like don’t u need to have a special room for it
It depends on if you use solvents like turpentine - if you do, yes you’ll probably need a dedicated space with lots of ventilation. But, I actually just paint mostly with straight oil paint from the tube (sometimes add some linseed oil to thin it). So really, I just need a corner of the room to put my easel
Thanks
I'm glad it was helpful!
Nice brushwork, Do you paint live or use photo referencing ?
I appreciate the kind words! Typically I use a photo reference that I have pulled up on my iPad off to the side, and that was true for this one too. It's not a perfect solution - I wish it was up by the canvass and easier to see. Do you also paint, and if so, what kind of setup do you use?
