Soldering Iron Vs Hot Air Station to remove through hole technology component from PCB
This video shows the difference between using a soldering iron and hot air station to remove a component (in this case a ROM Chip) that uses through hole technology, often referred to as THT. The entire purpose of this video is to show that this can be done using an inexpensive soldering iron in the $30-$60 dollar range and some solder wick and flux. Additionally I show the same process using a hot air station to demonstrate the difference in the time required to remove the same component. The reason I chose to do this video is because I often am asked if someone can do repairs that I do with only a soldering iron and the answer to this is yes there are many scenarios where a soldering iron is all that is needed. This video demonstrates what can be achieved with enough effort using a soldering iron. It also demonstrates why a hot air station is preferred for many repairs as its far more efficient at removing certain components from a PCB.
Although I chose to showcase this on an older electronic with larger components the same technique can be used on many electronics even newer ones to remove certain components using only a soldering iron. Keep in mind that certain surface mounted component this will never work on because the solder pads/legs are underneath the component and its not possible to heat them with the soldering iron. These components require hot tweezers or a hot air station.

      Lets test this to validate it. I have come across many battery holders online and have tested many of them to find that what you are saying is absolutely true. • @Tzirf
      @Tzirf 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      My tools are over 10 years old. Based on what I have heard from others in the repair industry Hakko has gone down hill and is exceedingly expensive compared to alternative hot air stations. I purchased an Aoyue hot air station over 10 years ago and I still use it today. I would recommend looking at them or the Atten ST-862D station. They cost around $250-$300 which is far more affordable than the $1000 Hakko station. That being said I do own Hakko equipment and its never failed me, but their prices are significantly higher so if you are doing this as a hobby you might want to consider the less expensive stations.

    $65-$80 …just to point out. That’s just about what a GameBoy color goes for now a-days. Even though that’s how much it was brand new. Prices are crazy for everything. The $65 one would be $130. And the $80 one would be $160. With the screen that is. So if you paid that much with screen. You would have to sell at $480 or more just to show a profit. I don’t think anyone would pay $480 for a gameboy with a new screen. I mean to me I just don’t see it. But to someone that’s rich it might be like five bucks to them. After seeming to have no luck with booting back into the wii u menu i tried to re-apply the non-hacked backup then deleted ISFShax and now its just stuck in a limbo state with no hope of getting into the recovery menu.

    Thanks for the vid. My latch popped off when I was removing my circle pad from my N2DSXL. In hindsight I don’t think it was broke but I thought I could just pop the latch back on but I wound up breaking it like that. Found this video afterwards. I got my replacement from a 2 pack on Amazon for $6 or so. Was fortunately able to get it on the first try thanks to your help!!!

    Hi Tzirf, my Wii U is not quite bricked but a sort of a corrupted eMMC? For example it loads up the Menu but when attempting to change something like removing parental restrictions, setting up a new internet connection, or at least reverting to factory settings and erasing all data it freezes. Maybe that happened due to an incompleted upgrade or the console's wifi module is busted, I heard. It is a not much used or stressed machine, so I think it may not freezes due to a failling eMmc. I tried the udpih method but nothing changed, as of course my Wii U was not CFW. So since I've got no NAND backup, will this method (isfshax) do any good? It is a Hynix chip

    I have a little question, I followed the guide until you have to 'erase mlc.' I started it, but it didn’t go further than 'Vectoring to 0x01000300...' I started it again, and it still hung up on vectoring, so I started almost from 0 and thought that the problem was maybe the installed isfhax and uninstalled it (this option appears when you hit BOOT /ios.img/ to be exact in the frame 9:42). This forces you to shut the system down, same as when you install it. But after that, it doesn’t really boot up anymore, it blinks blue two times, then stays blue, and the disk drive makes some noises(not the normal ones), but is the only thing that works properly. My Pico and SD card are doing nothing, the gamepad doesn’t connect and i get nothing on my screen. in conclusion i would recommend not doing this. I didn´t do a NAND-AID yet and have no idea if this or anything else could make this thing work again. so does someone have thougths on this ? I´m open for ideas.

      ISFSHAX is required to rebuild the MLC. If you removed it after erasing the MLC, but before rebuilding it you screwed up. That being said, 2 blue blinks and then turns off? or does it stay blue and remain on? If it remains on, what happens if you wait a minute and push the power button? If it stays on, its an OS crash (which makes sense since you tried to erase the MLC and that would erase the OS) If it turns off its a display problem. If you wait a couple minutes does the LED do anything else? Have you tried to use the UDPIH/Recovery menu to reinstall ISFShax and use that to rebuild the MLC? If you cannot get the recovery menu working again then your only option is defuse, which is must more involved. github.com/shinyquagsire23/wii_u_modchip/tree/main/pico_defuse. It should be noted that without ISFShax installed there is a point of no return when the SLC becomes corrupt where defuse is the only way to repair the console. There seems to be some confusion about what the MLC is, the MLC is alot of things but all you really have to understand is that it holds the OS for the Wii U. If you erase it the Wii U has no OS, even if the erase fails at some point the OS will be corrupt and unusable. Additionally MLC/SLC remains synced on the console and must be synced in order to function. Anyhow youtube comments are unreliable so if you wish to diagnose this further I recommend making a post on my website. Something else worth noting, there seems to be alot of individuals contacting me, thinking they can just rebuild a failing eMMC and the console should work. While this might appear to fix the problem, the truth is its a temporary band-aid at best. At worse this will cause serious headaches because the eMMC is way too degraded to even get through the rebuild process successfully. This is why its much easier to verify the eMMC is failing by looking at logs. If the logs show its failing, repair using NAND-AID.

      @@TzirfFirst of all, a huge thank you for responding to me at all, it’s not something I take for granted. The Wii U blinks blue twice and then stays blue. The disc drive still works, as it accepts and ejects games, but there is no display. I can't access the recovery menu anymore, no matter when I plug in the Pico. I also left the console on for 2 hours, but nothing changed. I believe that defusing is the only way to bring it back to life. Fortunately, I didn't have any important data on the Wii U anyway. One important question when i try to defuse my Wii U do i have to do a nand aid and when yes before or after the defuse? And is there any youtube tutorial about this ?

    is there anyway to check my MLC without using the recovery menu and just an sd? My wiiu has shown only one single sign of glitching in that when clicking back out of the prompt ot enter a password for a nnid. the top half of the screen stayed intact while the rest of the menu loaded in, Basically i had the home menu with the "Enter the password for your nintendo network ID." and the i forgot button stuck on the gamepad over the wiiu menu, i could control both, kinda trippy. It got me parinoid about my console and would at least like to check the mlc and slc, I already do have a Nand backup.

    • @Tzirf
      @Tzirf 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No you would need to use the Recovery menu to check the MLC/SLC. This doesn't require you to install or modify the Wii U. You just need a Raspberry Pi Pico with the UDPIH and an SD Card with the recovery menu.

    So. I have a Toshiba 32gb Wii U. It will boot and drop you into main screen and the moment you select something it will Either freeze or occasionally boot into a stored game, but it won’t run long without glitching. Could Any of this fix this unit possibly?

    • @Tzirf
      @Tzirf 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it could. I have not seen a Toshiba Wii U that actually had a bad eMMC. It may be that you have corrupt data and the console needs to be factory reset. Have you tried this yet? If that doesn't work then you may need to rebuild the MLC from scratch. While its not impossible to have a defective eMMC that is a Toshiba, its highly unlikely based on the current information available. I would be interested in having more information and validating if the Toshiba eMMC is bad. Make a post on my website if you care to share so that others who run into a similar problem can have access to the information. Cheers

    Is there any harm in doing some of the prep-work like tinning pads on the NAND-AID before I start working with the Wii U board? I'm very much a soldering newbie so anything I can do to make the process easier is good.

    • @Tzirf
      @Tzirf 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No there is no harm. Just remember depending on which version of the NAND-AID you have, you may have to solder the NAND-AID into the console before soldering the SD Card Slot in place.

    Step 1: Don't! Lost my pokemon yellow save file after I dropped the cartridge, battery holders suck. You don't lose your savefiles after a drop when the battery is soldered in directly and they keep the save file for 10+ years

Mr. SDIO taught me how to debug until I was able to get the mini otp. From what I've been told, in this Wiiu the OTP dump channels are closed in many ways. Is there a way to install the newly acquired MLC into emmc? Or must it be used through MLC2SD (should it be the same as nand aid?) Many things said It may not be very accurate.
