Whilst the two of them are driving in the car they are listening to Don’t Fear The Reaper by the BOC as well! Foreshadowing what’s still to come into the movie! Sam Loomis to Laurie’s question.” As a matter of fact. That was.” Verbatim! The 1981 Halloween II really should’ve been the finale!! Great job 👏!!
So many great little details. Thank you for commenting!!!
What a lovely review! I really love this film too!
Thank you! It’s one of my favorites.
Great video!
Thank you for watching! I am glad you liked it.
A mute Billy from Black Christmas with a mask.
It was many years after its theatrical before I saw Halloween. Even with commercial interruption it was impressive. Even the every day scenes managed to be ominous with the quiet intensity before the explosion. Enjoyed your interpretation and analysis. .
I just found your channel through you explaining why everyone would die from the thing and I already am enjoying your videos. (Sorry if it sounds negative I just have a hard time communicating and I meant that in a compliment kind of way)
Thank you for your comment. I hope you continue to enjoy my videos.
This a good analysis of what BEWITCHED. Dick Sargent said that, as a teen, considered suicide, still a problem today among gay/transfer kids.
Thank you for commenting!
Dare helped me. They did educate us about drug trends and which ones were more addicting. They even towed crashed totaled cars on campus to say no to drinking and driving as well. We need dare. I would rather see our tax paying funds go to the dare program than to go to the never ending homeless cause.
I am glad that Dare helped you. That doesn’t change the fact that statistically DARE and similar programs do not help. While I’m glad that DARE was a positive in your life, I am disappointed at your disrespect towards the houseless community. That will not be tolerated.
NOIR has just one syllable ! Not Noo-ar
You’re funny 😆
Shat up
I was able to see this film on PBS in the 80's. Later I saw it and I had seen it almost uncut. I can see where it confused audiences; some wanted to believe that it was the woman's fault; trying to survive is a weakness. We need to understand the damaged human being who commits these crimes or we might as well write off all plane crashes to human error. An unbelievable and uncomfortable film to watch, if you're interested in damaged humanity but time well spent.
terrific film with excellent acting and direction
well, you have two of my 8 all time favorite noirs. Out of the Past and White Heat. My others are Vertigo, Touch of Evil, Kiss Me Deadly, The Lineup, Shoot the Piano Player and if it is a noir, Night of the Hunter. I do not really care for In a Lonely Place but I know it is Eddie Muller's all time favorite noir. And i have reservations about The Third Man. Will post my review if you like.
I age with you about LONELY PLACE. At best it's a miserable romantic melodrama with a possible murder subplot thrown in. I have watched it 4 times over 25 years, and nothing about it stands out except a very good Bogart performance playing a massively unappealing character.
There are so many movies that are not on steaming platforms. Steaming services drop movies constantly, and don't offer a LOT of movies at all. I'm moving soon, and have to substantially reduce my physical media collection, but I won't be getting rid of it for all the reasons you mention. I mean, I don't need a copy of Boat Trip (yes, I had a copy of Boat Trip...sigh...). But there are a lot of movies that I want access to and definitely do NOT trust the studios.
If I was more ambitious and talented, I'd write an essay or a book about the connections between Film Noir and Blaxploitation. How they echoed similar cultural changes in the country, were made on the periphery of the industry & on the cheap because the studio system was broke, how they pushed at the edges of cultural tastes, how they were fertile ground for a new generation of filmmakers and actors, and how, though they were often "problematic," they put women, this time Black women, front & center in ways the were not being portrayed in big-budget Hollywood films. I am a sucker for Film Noir. I think my introduction was also The Maltese Falcon, along with Key Largo. My mom & I got a VCR when I was about 10, and those movies were on one of the first cassettes I borrowed from my dad. I didn't see In a Lonely Place until maybe 15 or 20 years ago, but it totally blew me away. I often say Casablanca is my favorite movie with Bogart (also probably my favorite movie, because I'm basic like that), but In a Lonely Place is my favorite "Bogart movie." Two of my favorite absolute shoestring budget movies are Ida Lupino's early skewering of "toxic masculinity," The Hitch-Hiker and Edgar Ulmer's mean little road trip, Detour. I tend not to get too strict on genre/subgenre/style classifications. Few things fit so neatly into a box, especially where art is concerned. Certainly with Noir, where I don't think anyone was consciously trying to keep strictly within genre borders while making, it seems like rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic.
This was pretty good. Perhaps sometime you can do a follow up on Neo Film Noirs. Along with House of Games, I'd recommend The Long Goodbye (1973), Night Moves (1975), Thief (1981), Body Heat (1981) Blood Simple (1984), Black Widow (1987), Red Rock West (1993), Dark City - Scifi meets film noir(1998) and maybe Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) to name a few. There are more famous movies like Chinatown, Taxi Driver, Drive and Mulholland Drive, but I thought I'd mention some more obscure movies that deserve some love. Even if it isn't exactly Neo film noir, The Big Lebowski's plot is directly taken from film noir movies of the 40's. The Cohen Brothers took the hard boiled 1940's detective and made him into a bowling loving, stoner.
Neo noir blows
Mamet's House Of Games is probably an example of a Film Noir. Might look more so, with the colour turned off :-)
Thank you for the recommendation. I’ll have to check that out.
@@TheQuietRiotProductions There's also The Spanish Prisoner and Heist :-)
Leaned something; I thought it was called film noir at the time. Interesting on the economics. Sort of the same thinking behind the creation of the horror franchise. It must have been difficult to get it down to a list of 10.
Not easy. I’ll have to make more.
Her daughter is mixed. This whole thing of “light-skinned black“ is Jim Crow garbage that needs to go. If all ethnicities are beautiful, somebody mixed doesn’t have to choose a side anymore
The lost Convention City in 1933. The sequel still exists, but not as a lot of innuendos.
And hardcore stag films were being produced underground and distributed illegally back then
1934
Uncle Tom Type? Really? That is the sad part because Black ignorant children think showing common courtesies is a sign of weakness. And since you know nothing of Uncle Tom or Harriet Tubman or Box Brown. Please keep that negativity Uncle Tom language out of your mouth. next time use the word subservient or submissive or courteous role.
Crisscross ❤
👴🏻🥃 WHAT IS THIS JUNK????
This is such a great video essay. I am studying this era in Hollywood, it's my favorite from "classic Hollywood"
Thank you! I need to do more videos on this era. It’s Hollywoods most interesting period for sure. So much to dive into.
I saw it at the Theater 3 times in 1973 at 16 years old.
I wish I could’ve seen it in theatre’s.
Insightful. HUAC was potential breaking point for this country. In addition punishing people who questioned capitalism, a lot of people were made to feel like cowards. We were able to survive until the fever broke.
Wait did she say… “the YT actress opposite of Louise Beavers?’ Fredie Washington is NOT YT.
Claudette Colbert is who I was referencing not Fredi Washington. Apologies for the confusion.
Why are you dragging your words out? Were you high 😆🪴☮️
😂😂😂
I tend to talk fast so I was over correcting and I was new to editing. Also, could be 😂
I've never seen this movie, or heard of it, though it sounds like they made an honest effort to depict mental illness. This kind of internalized action is where movies may have hit there limit. The classic example would be CUCKOO'S NEST where they changed the central character to be entertaining. We might have learned a lot about the way the mentally ill are treated we get no insight into how they perceive the world; it's our POV. I do admire what movies like THE SNAKE PIT, THE CORRIDOR and ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST did let us see the mentally ill.
If there's a movie that you know you're going to watch more than three times it's probably cheaper to buy the DVD. Human nature being what it is, we want things around us that represent who we are. I believe it was John Waters who said, If you go to someone's home and there are no books, don't fuck 'em.
Love, love the shirt. Their relatives have a channel on YT called: Curly's Grandson. They do skits as well. Very spot on.
Thank you! Saw it at a Thrift Shop and knew I had to have it.
A personal favorite amongst murder mystery films for me. Part murder mystery , part sly commentary and expose on Hollywood. All of it a game that turns deadly A rare film written by Anthony Perkins and Steven Sondheim, two non writers and non-screenwriters who created a good script. I saw this first when i was a kid and then got it on video years later. Well Worth watching especially if you are a mystery fan.
Some of these women ( and men etc) are not mentally ill, rather, free spirits living in a mentally ill society. Or at the very least- both. Greet content as always, QR! 😊
Thank you!
I have a white passing grand nephew. He does not like to be refer to as black. He is too quick to point out the other things that he is. He is Creole and melungeon like. But I don't think he wants to use any term that includes black. He currently is in a relationship with a white woman or like. His mother dated a lot of negative type black guys so I think that's why he doesn't want to be thought of as black.
I obviously don’t know but as a mixed race person I’d say he didn’t have much of a a relationship with his black side and this is a form of self hatred. It’s sad when white women never teach their mixed children pride in themselves! My white mom did but I’m seeing it’s not the norm.
@@denise76 are you white passing yourself.
My name is Roscoe Arbuckle & this video is questionable. Unjustly condemned & blacklisted! Much like someone today 2024 is being unjustly condemned. 😢
Interesting life there, i never heard of her before now. I am glad i found your channel, my horizon's have been broadened.
You look just as nice without makeup. You kinda remind me of -Tilda Swintson ( The beach) . Postscript: I can't stand Vertigo. The Bird's is the only film i like from Hitchcock; and that's probably because i lived in Bodega Bay.
Thank you! I’ll take it lol.
I have never heard of this movie. The popularity of vampire literature/movies has always had a lot to do with the sexual undertones but it seemed always male dominant. Typically Dracula is surrounded by his adoring female acolytes. I'll make an effort to become familiar with Dracula's Daughter and Le Fanu's novel.
CPS has always been very prickly and over cautious. And for what, half of the kids taht go into adoption/foster parents get abused one way or another. I'll have to watch this movie now... My mother was a foster parent ( and yes, we had a red headed troubled teen .. good gawd). Thx for the video 😊
I just noticed those pictures behind you; The Prince picture: my ex wife seen him in concert 9 times. Was her fave
He’s one of my faves too. LRC was my favorite song at like 12/13. I wasn’t totally aware of what it was talking about lol.
Good review, although the circumstances in this movie wouldn't just be present in Capitalism only (the least-worst of all the systems ever in existence).
No. That’s just your lazy ignorance and indoctrination speaking. Were you born in the Middle Ages you would be lecturing other peasants about the divine right of kings. The ruling class of any age ensures its beliefs are echoed loudly and consistently enough that all the simpletons repeat them. Spoiler: You can’t run a system that requires unending exponential quarterly growth on a planet with finite resources.
Men were really dapper back then... Wth happened?
Nice video. I know it isn't your genre, but could you do the film: Lord of the flies ( Black n White version) 1930's I've always loved that film! I wasn't amazed by the 1989 version. Though not bad either. Cute hair style, too.
Thank you! I will. Thank you for the recommendation/request.
I have always thought that any work of fiction where the title is a spoiler alert adds a dimension of difficulty. For a movie that was a critical and commercial success, I have to admit I never heard of it. Lupino is a very underrated director. It is difficult to have sympathy for a bigamist. In this film as described I can understand him. (Joke alert.) A woman has one job- to have babies. An old vaudeville joke: "Do you know what the punishment is for bigamy?" "Yeah. Two wives." I will make an effort to see this movie. I have a lot of respect for the artists involved in it.
always love your topics!😄
Thank you 😊
