Seems like another of Yaesu’s gimmicks to add a fancy “feature” label to their radios and sell you more stuff you don’t really need. I found an excellent solution for my dx10 when I want to go wireless audio and hear all the details. I have a BT transmitter connected to the headphones jack on the radio, and connect my Bose BT earbuds with excellent ambient noise cancellation to that BT transmitter. This gives me a very good wire-free, fatigue-free listening experience. Let me know if you want a recommendation for the BT transmitter that also can be used as a BT receiver. The one I have works amazingly well. The stuffed fiberglass mod sounds slightly better, less boxy. You could also try drilling a hole in the backside and experimenting with a tuned port of different lengths. Maybe best bet is to replace the driver altogether., which you did and it was a vast improvement. The in the case speaker still rattles though. I would disconnect that altogether or replace it with something better. I recognized one of the voices on 7255. That was Andy, W6AD.

I often use a combination of notch, contour, band pass width and shift and RF gain adjustments to pull out even the weakest signals in even the most congested situations. I was hunting weak stations this evening in fact where stations were layered one over the other and I was impressed at how I was able to compete some exchanges I thought were hopeless.

Is that coax designed to withstand those tight radius turns you have on that toroid? My understanding is that you don’t want to exceed the rated bend radius of a coax otherwise you change its characteristic impedance..

And then again, when you add the heat shrink, doesn’t that affect the characteristic impedance of the transmission line at that location?

Interesting comparison. In all fairness, you probably should have swapped the radio positions as well as the antennas. Nice to know you can get GMRS and Ham pun the Tidradio.

I actually think there was a lot of work involved, and not all that much of an improvement. I get by just fine with stock.

The J pole is a great antenna. I have a 2m version with 145MHz centre F (middle of the 2m band in the UK) in my loft I built about 10years ago and I use ir on 2 & 70. Mines built on the outside of a piece of 40mm 1.55ins waste water pipe and 2,5mm^2 house wire earth/ground like yours and taped together with insulation tape. It is hung from the ridge beam of the roof with a bit of string hung on a cup hook. I have always understood the antenna to be an end fed half wave fed from a 1/4 wave matching stub and that stub should be as high an impedance as possible to match the end fed impedance of the half wave. i.e. the wire diameter/distance between wires ratio should be as great as possible and preferably something around 600Ohms. Mine is around 480Ohms from memory. It is essentially a miniature Zepp but vertical. No matter what, it is such a simple antenna to build and easy to tune. I built my first J pole when I was first licenced 44years ago and I had almost no test equipment to check it out and it all still worked just fine. I've never put my current one on the VNA. i should as I tend to use it on 70cm more than 2m. I'm told that the radiation pattern is a bit high angle on 70 but for getting into the local repeater it doesn't matter much Thanks for the video, great to revisit an old friend the J pole. 73 de Al, G8YKM

Luckily I have a garden with plenty of space. So if I were going to start on 20 and 40 (and hope for 10) would you go for a dipole with 10m on each leg or one with 20m on each leg?

It looks kike if you'd crossed over one turn before itnwould hsve been more evn between the two directions of winding?5+1 crossiver which went thr same way, then 6 the other side?

New Ham General here running my first radio and antenna. I bought an FTDX-10 and feed it a 40m OCFD, 22'leg and 44' leg. Tunes 6,10,12,15,17,20,30,40. I'm working the world. mAT-30 tuner gives SWR of 1.0 to 1.1 on everything but 6m (1.4) and 12m (1.6). Will tune 80m to 2.1 but I can't get any power out, radio limits it to 8w.

Absolutely agree with you that a fan dipole would be a great option, but only if you have the space to erect one. If you are compromised with regards to space, then the end fed half wave has to be the best choice. My current efhw in a 2 floor apartment runs out through a window, outside of the building for 10m, back into the apartment for 5m to another window on the opposite side and the outside again for approx 5m. This arrangement lets me get into the north east US and Europe from southern England on 20m using 20 watts. I can use 40m for UK and near Europe contacts, but this band is prone to a high noise due to the compromised installation.

Good info. I have been on the air 60 years and have had many antennas. I can’t say that my best antenna was a dipole but that’s what I have worked most of my DX with! My full size 6 element 10 meter Yagi at 70 feet was good but I have used and am still using a couple 10 meter dipoles. My full size 4 element 20 meter Yagi at 70 feet was quite good but I have used two 20 meter dipoles for many years now. Switching from one dipole direction to another is instant whereas it took time to rotate the big Yagi. Most of my dipoles are and have been “ fan dipoles”. I presently have two 20/10 meter fan dipoles. Easier to handle than my previous 40/20/10 meter dipoles. At my present location I have the 40 meter antenna separate and on much longer coax. I do a lot of contesting and these dipoles allow me to sometimes work 100 countries on three or four bands in a single weekend. Over 1000 QSOs certainly tells me the dipole is a good antenna. As you say, these multiband dipoles are easy to build and tune. I always recommend beginners start with the simple dipole or fan dipole. There are a lot less headaches making it work! No ground or counterpoise necessary. In most cases, unless the feedline just happens to be a critical length I have never needed a choke. Only one of my dipoles has a coil of coax and I really can’t tell any difference. I never did that before, had no reason to do it when I did, so probably will not do it again unless I notice a problem. Keep up the good work. 73, Don

Is it possible to test field strength with my VNA?

I am shocked by the $0.75 crap speaker in the aess accessory speaker. I wish I had a buddy with a lathe. But if I was doing this mod myself I think I could get the job done with six or eight plunge cuts with a vibrating multi-tool and a bit of filing to clean up the edges. Still, when you have the right tool for the job, you should use it.

Thanks for the Video, but anyway the Improvement is very small. AESS is really a Fake ! My Speaker lies under the table and that's the best Place for it. In the Shack using now a small AudioBox at the Phoneconnector and sometimes Behringer Ms20. 73 - DJ5ER

Use the second setting for aess for high tone or low tone

I'll guess that it's not a short at the frequency of resonance, but only at DC. :)

In the future use painters tape and make a square on the table or floor marking the border of your video shot area. This way it will help you not to do things outside the border where most of your work is not seen by the viewer.

Interesting. I was first licensed in '57 so am familiar with GDOs. actually I started collecting them at hamfests and have MFJ, Heath, Kenwood and Simpson ones. (I'd like to get an Eico with a real vacuum tube in it.). Anyway I also have a Nano and your demo was very interesting. But all my GDOs have a series of plug-in coils with many more turns and I wondered what difference that made compare to your little homebrew one. Is it because of the wideband sensitivity of the Nano? Does Q enter into it? 73

This idea came from a magazine article years ago. MFJ copied it and sold it as an adaptor for their antenna analyzers. It is actually better just to connect the trap or resonant circuit to the VNA directly and measure the impedance of the trap or resonant circuit. Just use a short jumper with a cable separation at the far end with alligator clips. Calibrate that with an OSL calibration. The VNA can measure the actual trap impedance and Q using a direct connection, I do it every week for testing RF chokes. You don't have to spend $53 for a useless hunk of wire you can find in your junk box. You can make a jumper or adaptor for a jumper with clip leads and read the actual impedance with a direct connection. It can do anything this can do and better, and you save almost $60!!

You should get some connector savers. They look like an attenuator but they have a straight through connection. Just wind them onto the two VNA ports and leave them there. No need to use jumpers that way.

That $53.95 ad for a set of pick-up loops for an MFJ cracked me up! That's as much as an entire NanoVNA. Thanks for the videos.
