    This video is okayyyyyy, but there are too many instances in history of the so-called 'consensus' being wrong and so-called 'experts' not willing to call it out for either fear or greed, to ignore that factor. Sometimes experts in other fields can legitimately call out basic errors of methodology because they have nothing to lose either way, but those in the field DO.

    The reality is most dialogue are appeals to authority. So if I go to a doctor he may say that I should take an asthma preventative. Normally I would say fine. That is because we assume that there is a academic consensus about treatment and he is familiar with it. In day to day life we make huge numbers of decisions based on an appeal to authority. Smoking is bad for health, exercise is good it is best to avoid processed food. However there are times when we may wish to dispute the authority. The reality is that something is not true because someone says it but we actually rely on their knowledge. One occasion we may challenge authority is if we think the underlying knowledge is wrong. We then challenge someone to prove something independent of their status. One example of this is Gary Habermas and his minimal facts argument. He says that there is an academic consensus about some facts of Jesus life amongst Bible scholars. Their may be. But there may be reasons to suggest that Bible scholars are not really good sources. They in practice sign documents of faith which destroy any suggestion of academic independence

    i liked watching this video because a while ago i watched another one, talking about the hiatihi people, more oftenly called 'piraha', and, in the video, the creator was citing the people as a 'tribe'. i said 'tribe' is a racist term and that they should have used the endonym rather than the exonym, to show respect not only to the hiatihi people but to all indigenous peoples in general. i used an indigenous man as a back-up for my argument, since he not only studies sociology but also is an indigenous person and i cited a more recent general consensus that is growing in sociology towards the word 'tribe' being racist. they've said my argument was fallacious, specifically the appeal to authority fallacy. i was a bit confused because generally the appeal to authority is only brought up to talk about irrelevant people being mentioned and not, literally, one of the people the word targets and that studies the relations of society on indigenous people.

      The appeal to authority is indeed a logical fallacy.... First of all is caused because people don't understand words 😂🤷 What is the definition of authority? The quality of logic depends on the quality of the premises. For example "a politician is not an expert in climate change" why? Is the job you have that determines what you know? Or is it what you study?🤷 For example I have a high university degree in mechanical engineering. I worked as a taxi driver for a while. That means that all my knowledge about engineering, magically vanished in that period?🤷 Logic it's not as easy to master as some people believe 🤷 Ps Also I always had a high interest in psychology... If I have engineering official studies it means I can't learn philology, or the streets in a city?🤷

    It can be a very useful rule of thumb, however. The very fact that we can often easily distinguish between materials that are found directly in nature, and man-made ones shows how they often have distinct properties. Our bodies have evolved over billions of years, and are used to natural chemicals, for the most part. Even for chemicals like snake venom, the body can sometimes develop immunity over time. This is usually not the case for synthetic molecules, which are produced using processes often not available in nature.

    • @Veeravaara
      @Veeravaara 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We can't really assume that our bodies can withstand naturally occurring chemicals any better than man made chemicals. There are plenty of harmful naturally occurring chemicals (most plants contain them), but at least with man made chemicals we intentionally try to make them safe for humans. We have hundreds of generations of experience using certain plants, for example, which is why we assume there is nothing harmful in them. But we haven't really studied everything. With GM produce, at least we test them

    • @alterego3734
      @alterego3734 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Veeravaara Statistically, we can. We don't just have experience with plants, but we can also taste them. It's very rare for a plant to not taste bitter and be very dangerous. It's advantageous for plants to warn animals when they are dangerous. Studies are often flawed. Evolutionary reasoning, when done properly, is more reliable. The harmful chemicals in plants are in an evolutionary arms race with animals, and they belong to specific classes. There is no such precedent for most man-made chemicals. Basically all plant chemicals are biodegradable, again because evolution had time to find a way. Not so for man-made ones, like forever chemicals. The difference between natural chemicals and man-made ones is similar to the difference between animals and robots. Even though animals are technically also machines, they are made very differently, which leads to different characteristics.

    • @Veeravaara
      @Veeravaara 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@alterego3734 given time, some organisms can adapt to using these currently non-biodigradable chemicals, so I don't see your point there. Yes we have adapted to using certain plants and to sense some harmful chemicals, *if* we have encountered them in our evolutionary history often enough and if we have had an access to an abundance of it. In the last couple of thousand years we might have begun using new plants that might have cumulative negative effects, that only show up with abundant or long term use. Unless the plant is really poisonous, it is too short of a time period for us to evolve to withstand it. We've also learned to make poisonous plants and mushrooms edible by cooking them. So the reasoning is not quite so straightforward. I'm an evolutionary biologist, so I am well versed in using the evolutionary viewpoint. I agree that we often dismiss the power of evolution, nothing humans do can quite compare to the millions of years of evolution or even the currently occurring processes. We think we can make machines capable of capturing CO2 better than the trees we're cutting down, or genetically modifying crops to withstand pests, but that is a neverending battle. But what are the statistics that say that naturally occurring chemicals are more often harmless? (Note that GM crops have genes from nature, though they are not "natural")

    • @Veeravaara
      @Veeravaara 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I mean of course evolution would have provided us with a sense of distinguishing very poisonous compounds that we encountered all the time, relatively quickly, too. And that happened likely before we even were those squirrel like animals. But the story is different for compounds that are not lethal or very harmful at small amounts.

    On a similar note: I'm always confused about people claiming to believe in supernatural events. The way I see it, if something exists than by definition it has to be natural, because it is consistent with the nature of the cosmos. Something supernatural thereby cannot exist as it is not consistent with the nature of the cosmos ergo un-natural. So what you're claiming is - at least in my understanding of the term "natural" - that you believe in an event that can't exist by definition.

    • @Veeravaara
      @Veeravaara 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you define it like you do, there wouldn't be a term "supernatural". We need a word to describe claims that do not align with the laws of nature. That's the use of supernatural, it's for claims that go against the laws of nature

    I have done cognitive behavioral psychotherapy. I must say that it can be eliminated with a razor. It does not study you like a doctor does, if clinical psychology wants to continue, it must abandon all types of psychotherapy. Clinical psychologists should treat the patient with biophysics + mathematical reasoning + logical reasoning.

    I’m not sure I ever understood this fallacy and still don’t. If I said… If you start smoking marijuana it may lead to excessive use or other drug use… if my friend says that’s a slippery slope fallacy… what am I supposed to say? Maybe this isn’t a correct example.

    Popularity does not determine truth however, it does inherently draw power and power is a formidable tool. This is something clearly weaponized in the political arena.

    These fallacy's are the worst thing to ever happen to reddit. Basically impossible to have a conversation without some neckbeard screaming "Fallacy!" Lol

      @@RoyChong_1 Ugh I get it. Not only are they using fallacies as weapons, they’re often wrong about the fallacies.

    Could you walk us through recent papers, the quality of the studies, and how they are misrepresented in media? That would be compelling applications and examples of the tools in your videos.
