FORGOTTEN Art Supply CHALLENGE ~ NEW art challenge 2024
Hello! Thank you for tuning in. Hopefully, art/craft supply hoarding isn't an issue in your world, like it has been in mine. In recent years, I've become much more mindful about the art supplies I bring into my space. The items featured in this video are long forgotten supplies that I tried using after years! The verdict? Most of the supplies featured aren't worthwhile, and I do very much regret buying them.
I challenge you to shop around your art space, and find forgotten art supplies to create a piece with. From there, make a decision:
A) Keep the items because you enjoyed the process of using them and would like to incorporate them into your daily practice; or
B) Decide there's a reason why you forgot about the supplies, and pass them along to someone who will make better use of them.
Happy art-ing~

Let's talk about the problem that is your art supply collection. First off, calling it a "collection" in itself is an issue. Secondly, the whole concept of hoarding art supplies, only to use them. . . never, is also a major problem. Lazy is a bad word. Lazy is a character trait which can't be changed. Unmotivated is the word! Motivation ebbs and flows but can be changed at any time. You are not lazy you are a work in progress as are we all.

    Great video. So many TH-cam artists constantly pushing products. It's hardest for beginners. Not knowing what is going to work for you can lead to Over consumption but we can move stuff on. Some charities are grateful for donations. I think also as you get older having heaps of stuff gets heavy.

    I'm glad you picked pastel art supplies for this "challenge" because I never know what to do with my pastel art supplies either! This gives me some inspiration. Also thanks for adding subtitles to your videos! I never noticed it until today. I'm not sure if anyone can relate but sometimes when I watch TH-cam videos while I'm eating I can't hear the video over my own chewing sounds so I use subtitles until I'm done 😂 Especially for particularly crunchy foods like apples. It's nice to have something better than TH-cam's mediocre auto-generated subtitles.

    It would be far more stimulating and therapeutic to actually get out and paint some real humans, rather than these stiff generic faces copied from flat photographs. Working frpm photos really kills the spirit of a painting and the 3 d quality you can only get from real live subjects.

    • @JuliRoxArt
      @JuliRoxArt 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, painting from life will always capture more expression and personality. It's just not as accessible to find people willing to sit down for 30 minutes so an amateur artist like myself can paint them for fun. Reference photos are great for practicing different faces, skin tones, lighting, etc. And a more skilled artist can definitely do wonders with a reference that I'm just incapable of right now. Although, maybe I'll have my mom or sister pose for me one of these days. It would be fun to try painting faces from life 😙

    After sticking to watercolor for years, I also tried other mediums and art styles. For that subscription boxes are very useful. For example I had never heard of gouache before and it is now one of my favorite mediums. But when I realize that some medium isn't something I enjoy, I give it away to other (young) artists to try. That way it doesn't end up collecting dust and being thrown away, but it brings someone else joy :)

I love the look of those natural colours but I think the lightfastness issue would bug me too much... All good points! I avoid subscription boxes for this reason. It's better idea to have some friends swap supplies trying to emulate a sub box for each other. Ideally some of the items they really aren't using overlap with what items you'd enjoy and don't already have. Everyone wins.

    Thank you for making this video and pointing this out. When you started the video I already had a hunch where it was going and loved that it indeed went that way. I've been hoarding my artsupplies for years now and have markers, colouring pencils and paint left untouched because I wanted to perserve them and as a result I've been buying other supplies left and right. It has been only a week or two when I said "Screw it" and took my supplies for what they actually are and used them accordingly with the idea of actually making art of them and letting go of the perserving idea. Seeing this video really eases my mind and tells me that I wasn't the only one with this issue. (I don't know whether neurodivirsity is a clear factor, but I'm also part of it 😂) Thank you so much for speaking out. This should be discussed more often and the issue of overconsumption at this rate and in this field should be more openly discussed without being judged about it! Bravo! 🎉

      Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts! Art supplies are meant to be *used*; but it's easy to forget about that when we start seeing our supplies as more of a collection than anything else. • @AerynKDesigns

    Unrelated to my other comment but related to the video this time lol I started scrapbooking via a subscription box, and the thing I MOST remember, and hate about what I've made, is opening that box and going "oh... it's this". I was learning, I didn't know what I needed or wanted, and I thought maybe it could become what was in the boxes. Just like music. Most of the music I listened to I didn't like right away, it required a bunch of repeats to enjoy. But after years (over 20 now) of creating and collecting and curating an inventory, you're absolutely right that I have a lot and I know exactly what my style is and what will get used. One of my favourite companies just switched to a subscription box only model, and I point blank told them I would not be buying from them with that model. I don't want to spend (no lie) $160 a month on items I cannot see ahead of time, and likely will not use half of. That's insanity in any time, let alone a recession. I don't even let people buy me gifts that I didn't pick out ahead of time, because I don't want things to go to waste. I LOVE things, I LOVE presents, but I can't stand stuff just sitting around. Inventory, sure, because I cannot just jet off to the store the second inspiration strikes, or I need to make something, but *used* and *usable* items only.

    • @JuliRoxArt
      @JuliRoxArt หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh wow, I haven't even heard of scrapbooking subscription boxes. That's so interesting! $160 a month is absolutely ludicrous :o For items you don't even know you're purchasing, no less. I don't think I ever fell into the random supply thing or bandwagons. I'm impulsive, very, because I'm neurodivergent and I allow myself to test what is, or could be, my thing. But I'm obsessive about research. My husband wants me to buy things that will get used, not wasted, as he's the breadwinner I let him dictate that kind of thing pretty easily. I need to know what it is, what it does, why it does it, and how it can be applied to what I already do. I need every supply I own to work with every other supply in some way, or to have a clear plan in my mind what thing is for what project I have in mind. And as far as I can remember, I've always been good at that. When I try something, it's usually the lesser cost/lower quality item and I only upgrade if I prove I'll use the item if it did a.b.c better. Or years down the line when a better product hits the market. Where I overconsume is tools, namely stamps. I'm a sucker for a cute image, since I can't draw on my own. I've tried many times, but I just despise the process of both learning and the creating. But my thing is "hoarding" images to be used doesn't bother me as much, because yes they're tools, but they're also wonderful to look at and spend time with. To organise and touch and enjoy, even without the art and creating aspect. They're the one type of thing that doesn't go bad, doesn't get boring, and doesn't harm anything.... except that pocket book, even when they're not actively being used.

    I really wonder if art supply hoarding and overconsumption was as prevelant before social media. My guess is no. When we are bombarded with all the different art supplies that are out there on social media, it's hard not to feel like we're missing out. But if we hadn't been on social media in the first place, we would've never even known about these products and not missed them one bit. It doesn't help that everyone is trying to sell you something these days. I'm so tired of sponsored videos, or "this company sent me something to try out but I'm not technically sponsored" videos. That's basically still free advertisement for them and they know exactly why they're sending stuff to influencers. It's not to support them, it's for their own gain. Social media marketing is the way to go right now. I love watching art videos on TH-cam but I can't escape all the consumerism that comes with it. There are not enough art channels that don't feature product reviews or hauls in one way or another. I've unfollowed so many channels over the past few months because I couldn't stand having all these product reviews in my feed. I have considered trying art supply mystery boxes myself because it sounds like a fun challenge to use art supplies I wouldn't normally choose. But ultimately I decided against it for the same reasons you mentioned. I would most likely just end up with a bunch of things I don't care about and don't use. That seems like a waste. I already have everything that excites me and if there's really a new medium I want to get into, I will pick the things that are exactly right for me and not hope that a mystery box accidentally sends me something I like.

      Nuitetoilee!! How have you been? You make such a good point, social media has bombarded us with so many different kinds of ads. It can get really exhausting. There are some that I don't mind too much, like when it comes to small art-related businesses, and items that have more of a handmade touch. But in terms of ads for random, gimmick-y products, they just drive me insane! And they're so hard to avoid. They pop up everywhere.. Same with ads for random art products. Just how many student-grade watercolor palettes are out there? I feel like there's a new product popping up every week.. Do you ever get tempted by art supply reviews and some of the new supplies being pushed? Or are you past the point of wanting every new item? Thank you for taking the time to write out such an insightful response. I'm glad to hear from you, as always 😊

The only way to do that effectively would be leaving all art spaces online, but I don't want that either. Sharing my passion with others and finding inspiration in other people's art is important to me. I don't have any artist friends so online spaces are the only way for me to connect with other artists.

      I actually don't mind a few channels that are dedicated to reviewing say Watercolors for example. Especially if these people choose to buy the supplies with their own money, and do proper comparisons with other brands to see where they stand so you can make an informed descision about what you want to buy. But yeah the sponsored or "free product" reviews are a plague.

    Hi ! It's really a great video and I really think you've got a point. I've been doing art for many years and I started scrapbooking and cardmaking about 6 years ago, meaning I accumulated a ton of art supplies. Thankfully, I can use most of my supplies in both hobbies but I started realizing that I was drawing and painting less and less. It's not like I got bored of it, I just don't know what to draw anymore. I've got a lot of supplies that's collecting dust, but I love it and I hope to use it in the future. I've also started to get sell some of the stuff I bought when I got into scrapbooking, that same type of supplies you buy when you don't really know you're style, but that paper is soooo pretty 😂 For a few years now, since 2020 - 2021 I've also thought about a no buy challenge but it's too hard for me so I do low buy, focusing on the areas where I have the most supplies and doing a "project pan" inspired by the beauty community. It has really helped me and now I mostly buy what I know I will use and try not to buy duplicates. I'm trying to keep money to buy better quality stuff and "inventorizing" what I have and what I buy each month. I'm also trying follow the "it has to fit into the container" rule but it doesn't really work for my most favorites. At least I'm trying and getting better at it, and that's what counts. Anyway, I've never bought art or mystery boxes since it's not really a thing in my country, but your video is such a great topic of discussion !

      Hi Mikohikari 👋🏼 Sorry, I totally missed your comment! Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. Ah, I wonder if the beauty community was the first to coin the no-buy lifestyle-I also first discovered it through a makeup TH-camr. What is a "project pan"? I've never heard of this. Great on you for pursuing a low-buy! And for knowing what is realistic for you and your lifestyle 😄 I think diving into a no-buy is quite a bit intense and might put some people off. Sometimes, I ask myself if I'm willing to do another no-buy.. but maybe I'll follow your lead and start with a low-buy as well 😆 Have you noticed a change in your mindset when it comes to shopping? I found the longer I stuck with the no-buy, the less I desired all of the new, shiny, tempting art supplies out there. And even though it was a few years ago now, it still impacts my thought process when it comes to purchasing new items. I hope you find that it's just as impactful 😊 Good luck, and thanks again for your thoughtful comment.

    • @mikohikari3937
      @mikohikari3937 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JuliRoxArt Hi ! I think the beauty community definitely had a big role in the no-buy mindset as most of the time makeup is really expensive and you can't use everything you have in one lifetime, especially if you receive PR. A "project pan" is a project in which you choose some makeup (or in my case art supplies) and make a point in using all of it in a certain period of time (a year, a month...) . The name comes from the eyeshadow pans in palettes, as when you see the bottom of an eyeshadow (the metal or plastic) it's called "hitting pan". Then it diverted into other types of makeup and I changed it first to use up my handcreams and then to use art supplies. I don't know if a low buy really changed how I buy, even though now I usually reflect in the store about what I put into my basket. Am I going to use it now ? Do I already have a project in mind ? Do I have a place to store it ? Is it to expensive ? Can I buy it later ? I go through my basket before check out and usually put back a few items and it feels better. Also when I saw new stickers I used to want everything, now I just buy the ones I really love and know I will use. So I guess it's a good thing. And I know sometimes I don't fully respect my low-buy (like right now, as I bought washi tapes and it was on my no buy list) but it needs to be something I will use right up (or have a project with) or something I won't be able to find later and I'm totally in love with it 😂 Although, there are some products I know I won't buy anymore and I'm not tempted to try more, my low buy hasn't really helped much with my shopping mindset. I still want stuff, but inside I know it's because I'm passionate and if I buy it I MUST use it one way or another. There are a lot more things I could say about this topic and I know I forgot about a lot that I thought about after my last comment. I just hope I could add some thoughts that were interesting and help you along your no-buy journey. Have a good day 😊

    I am guilty of hoarding sketchbooks, but in my defense, I also give them to my friends for birthday gifts. They are not as hooked to online art supplies shopping and the local shop does not carry the sketchbooks I get. Recently I found Baohong Sketchbooks on Shein. The price is awesome. The only issue is that I have several sketchbooks started and I want to finish some before moving on.

    Yes, it is why I never buy art boxes. I enjoy making a research about the materials I am buying, watching reviews and demonstration videos. When I decide on getting a supply I try to make it work with the rest of my supplies. Some supplies I use rarely while some get used by my daughter. E.g. I rarely get to use Poscas because my daughter claimed them as soon as I got them. And since I mostly got them because I was influenced by TH-cam I was actually happy they will get used by my dauughter and her friends. I buy supplies every month, and recently I have stopped buying sets, but rather get a thing here and there, a tube, a pencil, a few crayons, etc. I do plan to splurge my Christmas money on a set of pencils, probably Inktense.

I just have started a series of illustrations that I plan to incorporate in an art book. I am waiting for the delivery of a new organiser for my pencils too. I have been doing art on and off for about 4 years now (after a break) I got fed up of cheap art supplies, those crusty watercolours for kids, horrible paper and those coloured pencils that break every time you sharpen them and hardly have any pigment and I watched a lot of youtube videos - I came to the conclusion quite early on that people bought too much! There are many youtubers who literally have a shop worth of items, all unused and they keep buying more stuff, and the saddest part is when things have expired, and have to be thrown out, unused or hardly used... That last is what has stopped me from getting more because I want to use what I have already. I don't have a problem with subscription boxes, though, as long as they have good quality supplies in them, and aren't too pricy as they've helped me to decide what brands to buy and introduced me to supplies I didn't know existed - I would have still been buying the awful cheap stuff that I don't like without them but there comes a point when you have to stop the subscription and use what you have. I've found my preferred supplies are watercolours, India Ink, Acrylic Ink, water-proof fineliners and good quality coloured pencils (both watercolour and normal ones.)

    • @JuliRoxArt
      @JuliRoxArt หลายเดือนก่อน

      @craftyhobbit7623 It's quite hard to balance whether or not to invest in higher quality supplies, especially when just starting out, isn't it? It makes perfect sense to me to start with the more affordable, lower quality supplies before moving up to student grade, then professional once you're able to commit to a medium. But there's so much exploration with art, and so many different mediums to try out. It's all exciting when you're just learning, you just want to try a bit of everything! The downside is, it leaves you with a whole collection that just gathers dust (and a whole in your wallet haha). Thank you for sharing your experience! You bring up a great point about art subscription boxes giving you a bite size of different mediums to try out. I see its appeal if you're at the stage of figuring out which mediums you like to work with the most. Rather than buying entire sets of mediums to play with, you can get a box full of little things to try out. That's a point I never considered. It works especially well because the subscription boxes normally include good-quality supplies. So subscribers are more likely to enjoy them. I like your perspective! Thanks for shining some light on a different side of the story 😊
