Apollo Demo - LM Micra with Acaia brew-by-weight
Second iteration of my brew-by-weight project. Went a little crazy this time. This video doesn't rehash the internal wiring, if you're interested you may want to review the previous video.
It's a living project so things are subject to change, but people can follow along via:

Slayer tip on Micra
มุมมอง 1.2Kปีที่แล้ว
Just a quick overview of the Slayer steam wand tip in size "0" installed on a Micra. There has been some buzz about this to make microfoam easier. It does slow things down and make it easier to be consistent, but it also doesn't quite match the double walled steam wand in terms of diameter, and it hits the drip tray grille if you swing the wand just right.
Acaia Ion Beam - Short Test
มุมมอง 1.1Kปีที่แล้ว
Testing the Ion Beam. It works! It accepts any simple screw-on camera tripod. Operation is completely silent, if it weren’t for the light it would be hard to know it is on. A hint of a breeze can be felt, but not enough to blow grounds. RDT works well too. My main issue is that it seems to make the coffee grind differently/coarser, which could be fine so long as your misting is consistent and y...

Marcus, great video ! I see hundreds of people having issues with the pro and the battery failing when using the mechanical chime and all happens 1.5 - 2.5 years. Do you have any recommendations as to where to get a replacement battery for the pro ? It looks like access is easy and I’d love to see a more detailed tear down of what’s needed to get to the battery and what torx drives you need etc to access the battery. I’m dumbfounded that after just a year mine is doing the reset when using the mechanical chime and it’s driving us crazy. Of course I can just disable the chime function and the doorbell works fine but kind of defeats why I bought it. Hopefully you can detail exactly the battery type and maybe where to get replacements and save a lot of people from throwing away a 1-2 year old 300 dollar doorbell as UI seems to not want to fix these and if the MAC address is close to 2 years of manufacture they simply say it doesn’t qualify and you are stuck. Thank you and hopefully you can shed some more light in this.
Hi, my machine has problem whit the water
Stock seams better
Hey Marcus, thanks for the great video. If the batteries themselves totally died (or one or the other) on the original g4, would that make the unit completely dead as well? My g4 of almost 3 years just died and won't power on at all. Wondering if I can replace the batteries as a possible fix.
@@emro1111 not sure. I would think it would turn on with transformer power even if the battery was not working.
@marcuss6950 thanks for the reply. I opened it up and man those batteries are a pain to get to, and seemingly above my pay grade to replace. More wires than I expected. Might just have to bite the bullet to replace. If it helps make you think of anything else that could have died, it lost power during a really hot day and hasn't shown sign of life since. 3 y/o unit with no previous problems. Even put it in the fridge for an hour
Am I the only one noticing water droplets not passing through every IMS screen holes?
You’re right. The water prefers specific paths and some parts of the screen are more active than others, on both screens. Probably lines up with the direction of holes in the screws.
Great work! Love the memory for different portifilters too. Do you think a flow meter for volumetric could also work? Could the Pi power and process a flow meter?
Is there any chance at all of you offering a premade/preassembled Apollo for those of us who are less technically adept?
Hey is this the stainless or the black stainless?
Thanks for sharing!
I know this video is a year old but WOW, great video I've come across looking for help getting over my fear of making espresso with my new machine. The step by step explanations along the way, right down to cleaning as you go, are absolutely perfect. I was intimidated by my machine but now am approaching it with confidence. THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!
oh my god! amazing! but is easaly installed? and is it sold?
So awesome, will be getting mine in a few days. Will have to look into the wiring but I really like what you created.
This is sick. We want the build plans!
How Many cm tall is the 2 boxes?
Great tutorial! Out of curiosity, is there a certain amount of pressure that one applies/pushes into the espresso beans puck before attaching the porta filter to pull the espresso? Like, when you were making sure the grounds were level/tamping it down, did you apply a certain amount of weight? (Or, did you only make it level?)
I would love to buy one. I am wondering and curious and what you were upgrading to?
Awesome video. Just picked up a 2021 e-tron and man I drive the speed limit and still the best I have seen is 2.7 mi/kWh. This is at 55 deg F and basically sea level. And the best charging speed I’ve seen is 127 kW at 39%. So your numbers are shockingly amazing. Hopefully as the weather improves my efficiency will too.
Hi Marcus, Great idea! 👋Great project ;-) ... 👍👍 I am actually working on another ESP project, with some D1 Mini ESP's ... Enough CPU and a single GPIO for this Micra steering should be available on all ESP's ?!.. Wonder about the display ... I looked at ESP boards. There are some with a display integrated. May be you can share the part-list you used for this project ? The intelligence of your Arduino project is in the script ;-) .. I presume no GitHub page where this, or even a beta of it, does exist? Enjoy your cofee .. Looks btw, great and tasty ..
Or do you even use a Raspi Zero (W)? ... 🤫🤔🤨
Why would you get the Micra and not the Mini?
Very Impressive! Great job on this. My super anal-retentive mind would want to slightly tweak the button layout and size of device. I would probably line up the 3 buttons to the right and centered inline with the size of screen, reduce the blank space at the top and bottom (shrinking the height by ~ .75 to .5 inches), and move the switch the side on the box. :)
I have this machine and I am thinking to return it. I am a type of person that needs a 24 ounce cup of Joe in the morning and there is no cop that will fit under the spout in this machine. That’s really disappointing.
It’s espresso, not coffee. You should’ve bought a coffee machine
Did you even know what espresso was before you bought it? Also you could literally just make double and transfer into a large cup???
Thanks for the video, where did you buy this slayer tip?
Please share what you can!
Can this be added to a línea mini non IOT?
Hi, where can I buy this?
Pretty nifty I was looking at your mods before I went with the Mini and the default stuff still really cool!
This is epic! Would love to add this to my machine
I just got my barista touch and I feel like too much grinds comes out and I end up wasting coffee. How do I fix this with grind size/time? I don’t want to weigh my beans
Perhaps a silly question. Does the pro version still work if you remove that battery? I'm thinking of course of the poe-power option, using the usb-c converter to provide power to the device that way. I'm struggling for clarity on these specifics. I know there is a pure poe version meanwhile, which is nice, but definitely cannot connect to an oldschool mechanical chime. What I would really like is the ability to poe-power the doorbell, and still have it activate the mechanical chime on press. Ideally without any lithium pack installed(!). Any insight greatly appreciated...
I am loving that one, you should sell this as a mod, I know some that would want to buy something like that
Can you please give a link to that scale that you are using? Nice review.
It’s an Acaia Lunar scale
Where are you located?
Damn, this is awesome, I wish I could come up with something like this!
God’s work
Really cool stuff man, liked the setup a lot it's very clean.
What's that screw driver kit?
Ifixit pro tech toolkit. It’s the best, I use it all the time!
Freaking awesome.
Great improvements since your last iteration! Two questions: 1. Would this be possible to achieve through a standalone app (e.g. like the la marzocco home app), or is the hardware you’ve built needed? (Wondering if this is the reason LM state older lunars aren’t compatible?) 2. Would this work with other Bluetooth enabled scales? e.g. Felicita arc Amazing work!
The official LM brew by weight for the Mini doesn’t work with any Acaia branded scales, old or new. They use custom firmware on scales sold and supported by LM, I think in function the scale itself turns the machine off similar to what the phone app can do. Yes, another type of scale could be adde. One of the things I had considered is coming up with a generic scale interface.
Thanks for this, do you happen to know the best way to disconnect the G4 (non-pro) batteries? my doorbell died in a storm, and I want to take it apart to clean it in IPA and dry it all out. I am loath to remove ribbon cables while battery2 is still connected, the connector isn't on the same side as batt1
Sorry. I took it apart just enough to notice it’s a pain, and that’s about it!
@@marcuss6950 No worries, I ended up gently taking most of it apart, got it dried out and working again after checking for shorts/corrosion.
Thanks for this video - I had a G4 Doorbell - I had RMA'ed 3 of them to UI and they sent replacements. All due to the cold Canadian winters. The Doorbell Pro is currently on sale ($199 USD or $269 CDN) and I just ordered a Pro based on your video. Here's hoping that it'll last longer!
Very inspiring. I am working on a DIY brew by time project. Did you find power in the machine for your controller - or do you have an external power supply?
I just opted to run 5v through the chassis from a separate supply. I suspect I could have found 5v from the board on the back or even hard wired something internally , but this was the easiest option for now.
Dude, this is amazing! You mentioned pre infusion in the video - is this able to control that also?
The Micra has a preinfusion setting that just applies when you activate the paddle. The same applies when you activate here!
Nice! I was pretty bummed out by LM after hearing it won’t come to the Micra. I will probably try this project as well so thank you for your video!
If you read this, could you provide some infos on the OS and settings you used for this project? I am very familar with C and some C++ but sadly my linux skills are of a very weak site.
Very nice! I suppose this is possible on a línea mini without IOT? Anything else you can share on programming?
Incredible 👏 it does seem odd that La Marzocco have stated that this functionality won’t be coming natively to the Micra
Fantastic. What bellow and PF stand for the Niche are you using? And is that a shelf liner on top of the Micra for cups?
Very nice work! I love the use of the Raspberry Pi. I own a Mini and given that the Micra and Mini use the same paddle switch approach, I would imagine it would work for both. I would happily buy the build instructions or the finished product if you were heading in that direction. I've built some Raspberry Pi projects and this would be a blast to DIY something like this for my Mini...Kudos for your ingenuity...seriously, what a great piece of engineering!
wow amazing!
Absolutely amazing work. It would be so good if you can post the bill of materials, code and 3d files so the community can replicate and iterate! I have a gaggiuino myself and lack of BBW was one thing keeping me from upgrading to an LMLu. I’d 100% buy a Micra if you publish this project.
lol if you were to do this now EA would either be full or broken...
Dude, your stuff rocks! Seriously, you need to start selling it. People would eat this up haha I can imagine it would be nice to have it place on top of the machine like a little integrated display top panel in wood or somethin. Thanks for sharing anyway! Continue the awesome work!
