Building a 1" scale ATSF GP60M Locomotive Part 16 (To Prime or Re-Prime)
In my last video in this series, I took my GP60M locomotive out to my train club in Goehner, Nebraska to not only see it on the tracks, but to also test out things such as the balance, how well the locomotive will hold the rails and the accuracy of the coupler height on each end.
The locomotive had a coat of primer during this test run, and while I thought the next step would be spraying paint shortly after adding a few more details, I was wrong! We took two steps forward and four steps back! While this has been frustrating, everything happens for the correct reason in the good of making this project as successful as it can possibly be.
Join me for the next half hour as I not only identify my mistake, but I demonstrate the lengthy process between identifying the mistake and fully correcting it.

If you've followed this channel for any length of time, you know that I have been painstakingly working on this locomotive for quite some time, and that's just from the time I actually started making videos of the build. The whole concept began in a discussion in April of 2020 with a meeting with my friend Will, who actually created the CAD design, the initial fabrication of parts and welding. ...
Building a 1" Scale Santa Fe GP60M Locomotive Video 14 Rust cleaning and priming the body

In this video, I demonstrate additional rust removal, smoothing out weld beads and adding brass door latches to the body and cab. I also demonstrate the drilling of bolt holes for the locomotive in various areas before spraying primer on the body to protect it from anymore rust. Big changes are coming as I continue the working process!

The conversation discusses the process of 3D printing, specifically the slicing and support stages. Slicing involves breaking down the 3D model into layers, similar to slicing a loaf of bread, and then rebuilding it during printing. The conversation also touches on the importance of sizing and importing files correctly. The support stage is crucial for ensuring the stability and quality of the ...

During my trip to Texas in late April, 2024, I was privileged to visit a railroad in Central Texas called the Comanche and Indian Gap Railroad. Thanks to my friend Charles, he took me down there to attend the last day of their spring meet. This also gave me a chan...

Thats what happened to my 1.5 inch scale box cab electric. I used a self etching primer, but cheap spray paint cans. By the end of the Chula Vista Live Steamers fall meet it looked like it had the plague, bare metal, exposed primer, and bubbling paint. I didn't want to be seen with it. Can't wait to see the finished paint.

For fluting why not a rotor tool and guide to dig in wood perfect curvatures lines. What some poor railroads did to modernize heavyweights cars in modern stainless, was a genious work of paint crews. They did fauxfinish paint as to imite the shiny part below the shaded part. It was a rather well convincing imitations at least in photo.

You did the good route. Thanks for whom warned you. Far better now than when complete and running. Disassembling it completely..... Had to strip paint on real RDC ! Won´t tell you how long i bake in the sun smelling that sweet sugar like perfume of paint remover. The liquid form being faster than gel type. It works slowly but it works....until you hit lead paint...sort of gooui muddy jelly substance. Let me tell you, lead paint stuck to stainless for real. May be toxic, but what a grab it has. Really tough stuff to remove ! Sand was a big no no. Heard that corn is less agressive. Hate sand. It do the job, but forget smooth finish. Billions of tiny holes to grab paint...and eventually rust too. Then good luck to get rid off. So your body is all scratchbuilt ? Congrats my friend it looks like a commercial body. I would like a metal body for an RS3. But how to bend metal on hoods corner ends, on 3 faces....and four corners. May be 3 sheets slightly bent where they approach to meet and finish with a piece of ball of perfect size and curvature radius, then weld everything without thermal deformation. What a nigthmare job !!!... or fiberglass. Far easier. That´s why it took you 5 years. Imagine a steamer and with real hot pressure steam as a bonus ! Good show it worth the wait😊😊😊

Thank you for the kind words, Marty. I guess there are different ways to do things, but either way, my original method was going to be inferior to what I actually needed to do. I will be adding a number of 3-D printed parts to the model that will be displayed in its raw form at the show next month in Lincoln. While I’m in talks with a guy to have it painted, I’m sure that there’s no way that I’ll have it painted before the show.

I, too, enjoy your philosophy toward your modeling and how you choose which era to depict. It's the same as my old modeling approaches and my current photography work: Please yourself first, of course. Remember the old MR articles that were entitled something along the lines of "It Ain't Prototypical" or something? (Seems like they were always printed at the back of the magazine but maybe it was in RMC?) I used to research some modeling projects sooooo much that they simply ground to a halt (they never got finished, in fact), so that's when things changed to "good enough". :) I'm chuckling at your comment replies... Well put... 'Nuff said lol Thanks for the chuckles today! :)

I've been binging a few vids today before I go shoot images of a friend's bike later this afternoon... I've just been skipping about through your different topics, both new and old, and this one certainly caught my eye. I never got to ride any Santa Fe pre-Amtrak trains but still have fond memories of two trips on Southern's "Crescent" between Atlanta and New Orleans immediately prior to Amtrak (it kills me that I had one of the ticket stubs in some stored items until the late 2000's that is now lost forever). There was still china and linen in the dining car and, as kids, riding in a dome car was every so cool. Soooo, these old stainless-steel, fluted-side cars bring back some fond memories. This is a very new-to-me modeling size for I've never tackled anything in such a large scale. Great ideas and well-executed! Ok, I've just enough time to watch part 2 before I have to get my posterior in gear lol... Thanks for sharing! :)

Funny how these go hand in hand, eh? I was always fascinated by aviation as a kid and built more than a few models, then began flight simming around 2000. When I began working a civilian transportation contract (nearly ten years) at Ft. Campbell, I got the best of the flightline, Army railroading, truck driving and heavy equipment operation (we had a container repair yard with usually a few hundred cans at any given time). I began doing aerial photography with a coworker that had his private license, then began working on my own license as well as my BS in Professional Aviation at Embry-Riddle's satellite campus there on post. Both the license and the degree were cut short after about 2.5 years thanks to sweeping permanent layoffs on military bases but at least I got some time in the air. I had already soloed and occasionally think about starting over again up here but most funds go into pro photography gear now, part of my retirement exit strategy if I make it that far lol... :)

Enjoyed this one, for it's all territory I've driven so many times in the past in the big trucks, either hauling rgn's or windmill blades up until about two years ago (O'Neil was a TP&L yard I used to frequent, for example). First trip to NE must've been for the first company I drove for back in '93 or '94, when I filled in on a dedicated run from West Burlington to Lincoln then to Alliance and back again with a BN rail trailer hauling traction motors and parts from each of the shops. Loved seeing the old Espee units (second favorite fallen flag) and that old SD40-2 bluebonnett, too. There's an old bluebonnett and a warbonnett both operating local service up here in Williston, not to mention one Cascade green unit, too. Amazing how long some of the old paint has survived, eh?

I finally made it back to see the progress while eating some breakfast this morning... Very, very cool! I was grinning while watching it going over the various track configurations. That's a lot of scratchbuilding and it wouldn't be hard to get overwhelmed with a project like that. Could be worse, though, for it's not a steamer! :))) Good stuff here... Never having dealt with removing paint from the material used for printing parts, I haven't any earth-shattering suggestions... I only recall using brake fluid on old HO plastic shells for kitbashing projects back in the day but haven't any idea how solid the 3D materials are these days. It woooould be better to have all one compatible primer beneath your paint job, though. After reading the comments below about voiceover work, I had to chuckle, for I had similar thoughts, as well. I worked in radio stations '83-'93, began driving trucks to escape the starvation diet (eating is a GOOD thing! lol), then tried to escape trucks again 2001-2002 for two years almost to the day at a classic rock station. You could do voiceover or talk easily... I doubt any dispatcher has you repeat anything! lol :) Thanks for the update! I'm off to go see if I can find anything to shoot out on the Glasgow sub up here along the Hi-Line since it will soon be winter up in these parts again.

The front entrance door is between the 2 front sand boxes. The back sand boxes beside the Engines tend to work better. The sand is dry and warmm so hear the front ssnd too.
