I'm a surface pattern designer and craft teacher. I love to create bold, colourful patterns for fabric, paper, home décor and more. You can expect to see showcase reels of my designs, some behind-the-scenes insights, occasional graphic design tutorials as well as sewing and crafting projects.
Create a Marbled Paint Effect with Affinity Photo 2
In this video I demonstrate how to create a marbled paint effect with Affinity Photo 2.
You can also achieve this type of effect by using the LIQUEFY persona, but it can be quite processor heavy and my laptop doesn't like it 😆 so I prefer to use the twirl method.
You also don't have to create the initial pattern. You can start with any raster image (JPG, PNG etc).
00:00 Introduction
01:10 Create a colourful base layer
02:43 Rasterise your design
02:53 Start marbling
07:12 Adjust colours to get more from your design
12:40 Examples of result with different starting designs

After saving diagonal stripes as SVG, I am not sure how I am going to use it again in another new design page? Because I cannot ungroup it!
Hi! Thanks for watching :) Did you try ungrouping before you exported the SVG file? You could also try downloading the file from the link in the video description.
Perfect and easy to made Affinity Designer V2
This was so helpful, I could not figure out how to get the diagonal to tile. Thank you for explaining it so clearly!
You're very welcome! I'm glad it helped you out.
Great tutorial, even if I work in Photoshop, the principle is the same. Many thanks!
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful to you.
Huge thanks, exactly what I was looking for! :)
Thank you. I’m so new to affinity designer but I did it. I couldn’t find a way to deselect the horizontal group from export though but at least I got my plaid yay

Great tutorial. I followed along with you each step. I had all of the diagonal lines and the pattern selected, then chose the "divide" option, then deleted all of the diagonal lines and nothing happened, there was no lines in the pattern. I even repeated the step multiple times and it still did not work.
Hi there! When this happened to me it was because I had not ungrouped all of the elements. The coloured rectangles and all the diagonals need to be ungrouped for the divide to work. I hope this helps.
