Adventures In Quiet Places
Ireland
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 8 พ.ค. 2020
Hi fellow Adventurer!
Do you want to know all the best places to visit on the Ring of Kerry? What to prioritize in Killarney National Park if you only have one day? When to hike the Kerry Way? Or perhaps you want to go off the beaten track and drive the Beara Peninsula or marvel at all the Ogham Stones in Dingle? Then you've come to the right place!
My name is Niels and I have been exploring the Ring of Kerry in South-West Ireland for over six years. Forgotten valleys, beautiful nature, ruined monasteries and ancient neolithic sites are all waiting to be explored. However, so many of the best spots are missed by tourists who only stay on the "Ring". Perhaps I can show you some of these well-kept secrets.
Come hang out with me (and the local heroic sheep) and let me inspire you to your own adventure at the edge of the "old world". I upload new videos every week.
Here's to having experiences that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Here's to the adventure!

👉 NOTE: 👈
About seven minutes in, I mention that Ireland is "...a very young country" (part of tip 8). Please note that this is referencing the modern Republic of Ireland. It gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1919. This ended almost 750 years of direct interference by the English. Ireland and its culture is of course much, much older!
🍀 REMINDERS: 🍀
Three things to keep in mind for all our videos:
1 - See a place you like? Comment with the specific timestamp (by typing for example 2:23 or 9:07) and I'll try to get back to you with the coordinates of that exact spot as best I can. Ireland is too beautiful not to share it with as many people as possible, so if you see a nice shot in any of my videos, let me know by commenting the timestamp!
2 - All our videos are mainly focused on tourists who want to get the most out of their Ireland visit (although please enjoy even if you are not in this category!). As such, they are 'beginner level', as there is so much to share about Irish history, nature and culture. This is a field that has a lot of enthusiasts in it. If you are one of those, you probably know way more about the subject than is shared in the video. Keep in mind that the intent of all the videos is to be at an introductory level so that visitors can get the most out of their trip and start to get familiar with what they will see when they visit Ireland. Be kind in your words and keep it civil in the comments. I'd love for you to share even more information in the comments so that everyone can keep on learning about this great island!
3 - Take responsibility for your own travels. These videos are meant to share my own love as an immigrant to Ireland, and as an inspiration for future visitors. They are not intended to tell you what to do or how to do it. Travelling has an inherent danger to it. Ireland is not a 'curated' playground. It is a real country, with its own beauty and shortcomings. The roads are small and windy. There are seldom fences at cliffs. The mountains are slippery, and the bogs soggy. Prepare yourself accordingly when you visit. Be smart, don't take unnecessary risks, and take responsibility for your own travels. Through being well-prepared and making smart decisions, I hope you will have a great stay and that our videos have played a small role in your enjoyment.

KILLARNEY NATIONAL PARK FIRE - How Bad Is It? (Information for Tourists)

Great video. I'm assuming you are driving counterclockwise but they say to avoid the busses drive clockwise. We'll be driving from kilkenny to the ring and staying in in kilorglin. Now I wish I planned for kenmare. I'll have to check out the next video. Thanks.
We are coming in February,,, I hope that is ok for a good time
Appreciate the bit of guidance you share about hiking difficulty. Bringing a handicapped person with me (walks, but limited) so must be selective about stops.
Great details!!
I love the Irish people never seen a group so quick to a joke or smile always on the lookout for a good time would love to visit the green island and do a few painti g of the country side and learn about there history and legends from the locals
Would love a video on Irish etiquette and communication style. As an American I found Irish to be somewhat distant until we engaged them first. In America we are very direct so connecting is more mutual (We also accidentally booked our trip during St. Paddy's so maybe they were tourist weary which is totally understandable!!) I was always worried I was going to annoy the locals so I didn't engage as much as I would have if I was in a more direct country.
9:20 as well please! Wonderful video!!

Love your videos! How long is this hike - out and back? Thx!
About 45 minutes up, 30 minutes at site and enjoying the view over the bay, 45 minutes back. 2 hours from start to finish. Hope that helps :)
hey dude! This is an older video but I found it looking for ideas for my upcoming trip to Ireland 🇮🇪 and while it may sound stupid, I just want to thank you for including the information about if there‘s toilets. As a chronically ill person, this information is (unfortunately) vital.
We also do the finger flick salute in the U.S., esp. in neighborhoods and country roads.
Wonderful video! We'll be there in May, how are the roads now? Also, is May (1st week), a good time to visit?
I love this place ❤
The recommendation to keep driving after Gap of Dunloe and continue through the Black Valley to Lord Brandon's Cottage was excellent, thank you! This was the highlight on our single day driving the Ring.
Hi there!! What is the location that you shot this footage? 8:49 💚

The photography in this is outstanding
Your video was very helpful. I'm going at the end of April.
Please send a link to this out of the way stone circle
maps.app.goo.gl/mcG8Xezy5L6v8QPu8. Known as Uragh West. At the better known Uragh stone circle, follow the signs for 'boulder burial'. This will take you up the mountain. About a 45 minute walk past a famine house. Steep incline! Take wellies along, as the last part of the track in the forest is almost always mucky.
@@AdventuresInQuietPlaces thank you very much

Far too kind, but thank you!
Dear Niels, Thank You so much. We have been 5-6 times at the Ring of Beara and most of the places we had never seen. (Sorry about my rusty English)
We are taking Skellig Michael boat ride at 10 am in a short while, then driving back to Killarney after that via ring of Kerry, do you think there are busses after 14:00?
This was the most perfect video to have found before my trip! Thank you SO much for putting these together.
Thank you so much for this lovely video. My husband and I will be visiting the Beara Peninsula in September and we are so happy to learn of these special places.
Hi Niels, can’t get enough of these videos! Wondering your location at 1:53 min in.. incredible views and seemingly accessible for all skill levels. Ty much!! - K&E

Hi! I am coming to Ireland for around 20 days with my family (6 members). We intend to go for a tour of the Ring. what car should I rent when I go for the Ring of Kerry? I am from Kashmir (Pakistan) and surely used to drive the bumpy meandering roads.
this was super helpful thank you planning on doing this day in mid september ,we are hoping this will be off season. Would like to know what time in the morning you suggest we start as we really want to do the gap of dunloe and the black valley. Also do you have any videios on dingle?

As I plan my 2 Day trip to Beara, this is probably the most comprehensive video I've seen and covers all the key sites, as well as lesser known sites, if time allows. Thanks. It looks like you would need 4 or 5 days to take in everything and fully appreciate it, without rushing.
Everyone says "top of the morning to you", make sure you do too.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you 🙏🏻. Very helpful video
My wife and I were in SW Ireland the first 2 weeks in April (2024). We did not have the best weather, but made the best of it. Beara was my favorite, and thanks to your videos, we saw many memorable sights (sites). Thank you for adding much to our trip.
Great tips and advice! We booked our trip to the southwest coast of Ireland this coming winter. Cannot wait! It's been a longtime bucket list destination for us.
Hi, thank you so much for the tips we will be there in the fall. You mention that we need an international driver's permit, but it looks like the Ireland embassy website says tourists can drive with their own license for up to 12 months. Can you clarify please? My husband and I will be doing most of the driving for our group.
Just be aware that Irish drivers are often unaware of their own mortality.
I'm going to Ireland. Leaving in 1 week. Wish you were my tour guide.
Hope you will have a great time, Judi. Drop me a line in my DMs on my instagram if you are in the SW area (Ring of Kerry, Ring of Beara) to see if Ive got any availability for a day or 2 of tour guiding. Regardless, you've picked a great time to travel to Ireland - late April, early May is when nature takes off here. Now let's hope that the weather gods are kind too.
"A local" with a funny accent !😂😂😂😂
Could you please give me the name and coordinates of the cliffs at 5:15. This place I don't know and I visited Ireland already 18 times 🤔 Thanks Also a big thanks for all your videos and tips.

I see that you have a walking stick. Do you recommend having one? My aunt, my friend, and I are going to Ireland in April and we're doing the Ring of Kerry. Trying to be as prepared as possible.
That's actually a really good point. This video was taken just south of the Ring of Kerry, and I'm specifically going 'off road'. The stops on the Ring of Kerry are not this 'adventurous' and are well pathed/paved - so no walking stick needed. If you are planning to go off the beaten path anywhere in Ireland than a hiking pole is really advised. There is an enormous amount of bog land here, even on mountain sides. With the amount of rain we get, that means it is *always* slippery. Even after a 3 week dry spell. So, it depends. If you are asking about the Ring of Kerry - almost all stops there are tourist orientated and do not *need* a walking stick. If you are going anywhere more adventurous and off the beaten path - a walking stick is highly advised. But again, it depends what you are going to be up to. I might have repeated myself a couple of times there, but hope that helps.
@@AdventuresInQuietPlaces it does, thank you!
This is so helpful thank you so much. A question about encountering the tour buses, would a motorhome be able to pass a tour bus? Ty
This depends where on the Ring you encounter tourbuses on your trip. For the majority of the Ring, a tourbus and a motorhome can pass each other without issue. *HOWEVER*, you will always see that when you do encounter a tourbus with your motorhome, you are at the most narrow parts of the Ring. And there, **no**, tourbuses and motorhomes will **no**t be able to pass each other. Because of this, motorhomes and tourbuses are asked very strictly to all go and follow the same direction. That is counterclockwise. So for example if you are starting in Killarney, you will first be driving towardsto Killorglin, Caheersiveen, Waterville, etc. In that way, all the 'heavy traffic' is following each other and not encountering each other as oncoming traffic. There are even signs just outside Torc Waterfall for people going clockwise on the Ring, to not do so with large vehicles - because they inevitably are going to be bumping into oncoming tourbuses. In the height of the tourist season, with cars in front and behind, you will not be able to turn or get out of the way. So, follow the tourbuses, and go counterclockwise. If we follow our earlier example of starting in Killarney, this means you will do Molls Gap, Ladies View and Torc Waterfall at the end of your Ring of Kerry, when starting in Killarney. Hope that helps.
I know this may be a weird question, but what kind of shoes should I bring? Could you please give me a suggestion?
Not a weird question, actually a really good question. Ireland, tourists and shoes are often... a bit of a mismatch. On the Ring of Kerry, almost all locations are well paved/pathed. So, you can get away with sneakers. However, if you are planning on doing *anything* off the beaten path outside of the Ring of Kerry, anything slightly more out of the way, not as touristy, seen in a instagram picture or tourist book, but no big tourbuses stop there... bring waterproof shoes. Not water resistant. Water *proof*. With the amount of bogland we have.and rain we get, the ground is *always* wet - even in the height of summer. If you are planning to go even slightly off the beaten path and you only have sneakers.- they are going to get ruined. I did mention this very topic more in-depth here: th-cam.com/video/R-Uxarciz8U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=DGTNMJO3R0j5_0y6&t=231 Oh, and a wind resistant jacket or windbreaker if you are going anywhere near the coast is always a good idea. Hope that answered your query!
@AdventuresInQuietPlaces Thank you SO much for the answer. I watched all your videos and I'm very excited to go to Ireland next month. I do have a pair of Timberland boots that I took to Scotland last year when I went there... but if I can I'll try to find some ligher WATERPROOF shoes. Thank you so much again. Have an amazing week. I'm watching your videos from Spain and I loved all of them.
Very useful.Thanks.I am planning in Oct in the lean season.Your videos will be useful to plan the trip. Can you please do a video on places to stay in Ring of Kerry. Best wishes
