    I have a deluxe reading vintage doll you move her arm and her mouth moves. Her eyes are loose and the eyelashes fell out. I was gonna glue eyelashes back in…: can I even take the head off the body since the mouth moves with the arm ? And do I need new eyes since they’re just loose ?

    • @hobartdollshospital1720
      @hobartdollshospital1720 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi. Once the eyelashes are in place they might stabilize the eyes so they don't seem so loose. I would also need to see the doll to tell if you can remove the head or not. There is a good chance that there is a control mechanism that runs between the arm and the mouth, but sometimes they can be simple and possible to disengage. However, not always so don't force things. Does the doll have a manufacturer name and/or number anywhere on it? Can you send me some pics? Send them to kittykruup@hotmail.com

    So it sounds like a childs therapy doll from a ghetto if the story is correct rather than a death camp, they tried to distract the children and keep them occupied while helping children make some sense of what was occuring around them and to them to help them process the truma, there maybe 1 doll for lots of children who would of played with it & passed it around ...which would be passed on to other children in the ghetto as the children which left were moved on to the death camps. The jewish people appear to of been very good at restoring dolls even during the ghettos they had doll restoers and shops which did carry on restoring dolls (aswell as being used for other reasons) for children as new toy items couldnt be obtained and mothers would find discarded bits of toys or make toys or mend toys also ..1937 sounds possibly abit late for the story altho not impossible ...some dolls were 1920s /early 1930s made which were then taken in to the camps with them as already loved items...maybe it was a newish doll at the time for whoever brought the doll in to the ghetto for that particular reason , if you can locate the correct ghetto via country, area, dates and the survivors name would of been benificial in recording the story for prosperity and obtaining infomation in determining which ghetto , you can then guage a date from whebn the ghetto was initiated and then subsequently liquidated or liberated, some did escape these ghettos or were liberated from them . Dolls were important as items of value could be hidden inside dolls by the captives ,as could money etc , so dolls were brought along to ghettos not only as precious sentimental items but with a use, taken with familys during attempted escapes etc as money, valuables could be hidden inside , then given to a child who could be least suspected with an innocent toy, so these dolls held secrets.. and sometimes Natzi soilders would allow prisioner children to keep their toys to prevent crying, screaming, fuss etc... majority were checked & searched tho as thus was a known hiding space eventually , you find that they have loose heads if they are strung baby dolls where the German soilders pulled at their heads to check for hidden items or where later when items were sorted at the death camps, searched and put in to piles , in poland the buildings peoples belongings were searched & sorted in to piles were called & known as "kanada" spelt with a "K" as Canada was considered (for loss of a better word or way to explain it...) wealthy .. i hope this infomation comes in useful , the jewish Yad museum in isreal has an interesting project concentrating on hollocaust suvivors toys & their stories which they are working on to preserve for future generations so these incredible stories attributed to these "toys" do not get lost or forgotten...

    They can be difficult and at time impossible to sit. Don't force her legs as this can create cracks where the bar goes across through her hips or even up through her buttocks. Sometimes you can lift one leg into a sitting position and then the other but be very careful and perhaps best left to just be a standing doll. You can get a doll stand to support her in a standing position but always attach the base of the stand to where it is positioned as a lot of dolls come to the dolls hospital that have been damaged due to falling over.

      There are a few ways. Try this one first. Check the edges around the hole in the top of the legs. If soft and brittle then strengthen by applying some Araldite or two part epoxy resin around the edges or surface around the hole. But only do this if it appears brittle or weak. Get your tubular elastic and tie around the middle of a nail or thick wire. Add a drop of super glue to the knot to ensure it won't unravel. Trim the nail or wire so that when you insert it through the hole it will sit flat against the underside. Once this is done then thread the elastic up through the rest of the doll. Note: If you apply resin to strengthen the area around the hole make sure it is fully cured and hardened before progressing to the next step. Hopefully this all makes sense. Let me know if you need any further advice.

      Do you mean the external cap that you remove to access the crier? If so, if you look closely you will see that on each side is a little slot. You need to align it with pieces that help lock the cap in place. Gradually turn the cap a little at a time until the slots line up with the pieces that will then allow you to lift the cap out. It's not always easy and may take patience so as not to damage things. Let me know how you go or if you need further explanation.

I'm 70 now and my pedigree doll was brought back from England before I was born. I have had her restored a few years ago with disastrous results. Her head will not stay still and flips back or forwards and her legs go up into her body. She does have a split seam in the body groin( that she didn't have before the restoration)I have tried twisting the head to tighten the elastic thinking to hold her head better but no this doesn't work. Now I have watched your work I'm thinking I'll pull the whole lot apart and give it ago myself....Fingers crossed.

    • @hobartdollshospital1720

      Is that the part with the Iris? It could be that the little bits that act as rockers are worn. They stick out either side of the eye and sit in slots which allows the eye to open and close. You might be able to remove the entire eye and fix it. But first try pulling the eye forward and see if it will re engage back into the slots just in case it has simply popped out.

    Thank you so much for this information! Too finish off my restoration just wondering if you may know what paint should be used on pedigree dolls - touch up cheeks and lips? Does the paint need to be sealed?

    • @hobartdollshospital1720
      @hobartdollshospital1720 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've tried a few different ways. I presume you mean Pedigree hard plastic? You could use an air sprayer and lightly dust the cheeks. Another is using an oil based paint. Mix the colours to get the best tone then dab very lightly a tiny amount of turps to wet the cheeks then onto this dab on some paint that has been watered down with turps so it's quite thin almost transparent. You can try using a sponge or even just your finger. Don't be afraid to wipe off and try again till you get the result you want. By applying a dab of turps first and using a sponge the edges of the colour are feathered and look more natural. Using an oil based paint you shouldn't need to seal it but if you do then a thin satin finish would be good but probably not needed. For the lips you can use a stronger more opaque colour which hasn't been thinned down. Then while again not that necessary, you can seal with a crystal clear gloss finish. When using a sealant make sure it is crystal clear. If colouring cheeks on a vinyl doll acrylic paint is best as oil paints can sometimes bleed into the surrounding area .

      @hobartdollshospital1720 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Eva. In what way is the eye socket damaged? If it is torn at the back you can repair it with some silicon sealer. Applying it by going in through the neck opening and applying it to the outside back of the socket so it doesn't alter the depth or shape of the inside. If the socket is simply stretched and so the new eye sits too far back, then put a little washer into the socket before adding the eye, this will push the new eye forward into a better position. There are other things that can be done as well, but let me know in what way the socket is damaged. Thanks, Kitty
