Is this an 'S" or not?
Is Superman's crest in James Gunn's upcoming SUPERMAN film an actual 'S' or is it a Kryptonian symbol for something? Hope? The House of El?

    In superman II we had two different directors. Richard Lester known for Hard days night and the Three Musketeers where Lester works with the Salkin brothers, future Producers of Superman movie. The legal consequences of firing Richard Donor meant some footage was available some off limits. Richard Lester had to finish the movie.

    One of my fondest memories of The Greatest American Hero was the episode "Dreams," in particular Joey Scarbury's rendition of the titular song. It wasn't until much later when I learned that it was actually a cover of a John Denver song from his album "Seasons of the Heart." I know Mr. Scarbury will forever be known mainly for the show's theme song, but for me I'll always love his heart wrenching rendition of "Dreams.":

      Cool!! Yeah there was a cover by Joey of Elton John’s “Rocket Man” originally used in the pilot and again in another episode, but unfortunately fell casualty to licensing issues they ran into when remastering the series. I hope someday they’re able to scrape together money to actually restore the full original soundtrack. I still heavily associate “Rocket Man” with that show, but it’s hard to find versions out there with the original music.

    Weird, I am no scientist but it’s weird Mercury is closet to our sun and thus the hottest planet in our solar system. Yet Krypton is crystal perhaps even a cold ice planet and it’s so close to the Krypton sun. Red suns cooler than yellow suns. 🤔😁👍

      @prodigioussaps 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I remember wondering about that when I was a kid. You could maybe argue Kryptonian technology allowed and/or required them to be ridiculously close to their own sun. But now I just chalk it up to artistic license, because those special effect shots still look gorgeous.

    Superman is the gold standard but really, all of our heroes killed in the 70s and 80s. Luke Skywalker, Flash Gordon, etc. They killed because they had to, not because they were murderers. So I'm okay with the end of Superman 2.

  • @DragonflyII

    It's pretty ridiculous there are so many people that think Christopher Reeve's Superman killed the 3 Kryptonian villains at the end of Superman II. Even worse are the far-fetched fan-fiction scenario comments here that completely ignore events in the film & your commentary in this segment, making up their own scenarios despite proof they didn't die. I saw the movie on theatrical release in 1980 & many times on VHS as a young kid & not once did I think they were dead. You actually see the trio arrested & carted-off by Arctic Police at the end of the theatrical cut. And it was in the script, as you noted. These commentators are completely missing the point of what Superman was about. At least until Zack Snyder's dreaded 'Man Of Steel' with Henry Cavill which portrayed the character as a bleak pessimistic murderer, at odds with previously established Superman lore. My question is, if you do not consider 'Superman II' to be cannon, then WTF is?

    • @prodigioussaps
      @prodigioussaps 15 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      The Arctic Patrol scene is actually NOT in the official theatrical cut or the Donner Cut, which is why this debate continues. It was I think in the extended TV version, and apparently in the international cut.

    • @DragonflyII
      @DragonflyII 14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @prodigioussaps thanks for clarifying. I thought you were discounting the entire film. Indeed that scene was in the international theatrical cut, as it was in the TV version. I was always perplexed by the extended TV editions of 'Superman' & 'Superman II', in a similar way to 'Star Trek : The Motion Picture' & 'Star Trek II : The Wrath Of Khan' which also had a lot of additional extra footage exclusive to the TV release. I was unaware of the studio syndication deal at the time. I think comic fans in particular baulked at the scene itself because of the additional super-powers given to Superman (such as the infamous cellophane shield & multiple Supermen), as a young child I thought it was odd but I attributed those powers to the Fortress Of Solitude itself. And the comic has since endowed Superman with additional questionable superpowers too. So they're all as bad as each other in that regard haha. It is a real shame Donner & Mankiewicz weren't able to complete their vision & the sequels were inferior, and while I enjoyed 'The Donner Cut' it used the same ending from 'Superman' (as it was originally intended for 'Superman II') so I don't quite consider it to be cannon, rather an alternative version.

  • @Roland314
    @Roland314 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    First, if you need to explain it this much, then that's a mistake in filmmaking. Second, I think what's happening is debatable because, as you say, he then needs to fly the other direction to "get" Earth spinning in the correct direction. Whatever the artist intent, it's not a bad audience interpretation to think that it's about spinning the Earth itself. One way or another, this is a poorly executed idea, regardless of what one thinks of the rest of the movie.

      Yes, originally it was always just an ‘S’ up until SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE came out in 1978. MAN OF STEEL also ran with a similar idea. It’s not an issue of people not accepting the original intent, it’s just one of many things about Superman lore that has changed over the years.

    I look at it a different way: he's not being his authentic self here either because he's trying to impress Lois. His characterisation of Superman/Clark is very insecure; he wouldn't have even told Lois had she not worked it out and tricked him. I think he's afraid that Lois is in love with Superman and not Clark and is being like "hey that ridiculous character I play isn't really me...". Superman is an escape for him. Don't take what he says here literally just because he said it. I think the lyrics to the Billy Joel song The Stranger are quite applicable. It's all about wearing different faces like masks and only ever really showing our true selves when we're alone: "Though we share so many secrets, there are some we never tell". I don't even think he's doing it intentionally either; he's just very "human".

    • @prodigioussaps
      @prodigioussaps 17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      That’s a GREAT way to think of it. I’ve always felt there is way more nuance in Reeve’s performance than there is in the actual script. Some of his awkward Clarkness is put on, clearly, but quite a lot of it feels genuine to me.

    • @Fyrehart97
      @Fyrehart97 17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @prodigioussaps thinking about what Reeve is thinking as an actor is actually how I came to this interpretation. Great actors add nuance to a performance like how a writer adds subtext to a story. Perhaps the writer and actor are working in unison here; perhaps Reeve is adding this to his performance; or maybe I'm an idiot on the internet 😅

    Yes! That's what we need. Super hero who helps because he or she can. Obviously I want it to be Superman. A scene in that movie could have someone ask Superman why he helps people. His response? "Because I can". Then have the first person come back with, "good answer". And they both smile. Price of admission, right there. No virtue signal, no butthurt drama, and not being conflicted. Heck, if we wanted to see that we'd go see a Marvel movie.

  • @briang9581
    @briang9581 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    It's not an "S", but it is the symbol for the House of EL. That symbol which was adopted by one of Kal-El's ancestors was historically used as a symbol of peace & hope during a particular time of crisis on Krypton. While its historical significance may have been forgotten by some, its meaning was well remembered by the House of EL and their allies. Earth: A small, locked chest dropped from the ship while it was being hidden in the Kent's barn. As Martha picked it up, she instinctively took notice of the silver "S" engraved on the smooth black surface. Many years went by and as Clark grew older, he started asking questions, questions that two kind farmers from Kansas just couldn't answer. Martha said to Johnathan, "It's time." Her husband took a deep breath, "Where to start?" The wife caressed her husband's face as she held back a tear, "We start at the beginning..." Johnathan called for Clark who was clear across the field. He didn't shout. It was too much of a strain besides, he knew he didn't have to. This figure that stood in front of him could only be 14, not much older. He had the visage of a young man. "Clark, I need some help clearing the barn's basement" The young man was aghast, "The barn has a basement?" Martha was waiting in the barn when her two boys arrived. "Mom, you know about this, too? What's this about?" They showed Clark the ship and the chest. They did their best to explain the decisions they had made and the secrets they had kept. They accepted responsibility for the half-truths and outright lies that were made in defense of those secrets. Clark's attention shifted to the black chest that Martha held tightly. "What's that?" His father was surprised, "I assumed you'd be more fascinated with the spaceship." Clark chuckled, "Yeah but there's something important about this chest. I know it. I can feel calling to me. That symbol looks like an "S", but it has a greater meaning, it's personal." Johnathan braced himself for more unanswerable questions, "Your mother deduced years ago, that the "S" is your family crest. Jonathan looked up at the barn's first floor and beyond, "Your family from, up there..." Clark was excited now, "Who are they? Where are they? Why did they send me away? Why-" His father interrupted, "Son, Son, we don't know. The bereft father through his hands up in frustration. Martha stepped forward, "Maybe the answers are in here." She handed the chest to her son. Clark ran his finger across it, feeling its surface. Then something interesting happened. The chest opened. Days later, Martha took the clothing that Baby Clark had been wearing that fateful morning. Upon some kind of inspiration, she decided to attempt to make a gift for her son. No matter how long she had labored, she never ran out of material. Before she realized just how miraculous her accomplishment was, it was complete. When she presented the gift to her son he said with some doubt, "You made me, pajamas?" His mother said, "Clark, you looked at the chest for one minute and you knew it was special. I have pondered over it for much longer than that. I know too that this "S", whatever it means, it's important. It will be important to the entire world one day. Trust me. Just put this away and when there is a use for it, you can kiss me on the cheek and say, "Thanks, Mom!" Years later, the plane touched down safely, but not under its own power. Martha watched with bated breath as the man emerged from the smoke, He waved to the crowd, smiled, and flew straight up into the sky. A female correspondent who had been on the plane stumbled with one missing shoe. She took the microphone from a red-haired assistant, "This is Lois Lane, reporting from the site of ..." When the report was near its conclusion, Miss Lane relayed the hero had calmed the excited passengers by sharing his opinion that flying was still the safest way to travel. She concluded that remark was meant to be humorous and ended her statement with, "What a super man!" Her report was shared worldwide. Martha heard a swoosh! She turned around to her son. "It still fits. I made it when you were fourteenish and it still fits. Clark smiled in admiration, "I know. You made it good!" He kissed his mother on the cheek, "Thanks, Mom!" His mother turned back toward the television. She said "Some think you are a beacon of hope, and others aren't sure what to think. They're scared of what you represent, change. There's a lady reporter, I think she has a crush on you. You better watch out for her. "I think I'll have to. She's my new partner at The Planet." Martha gazed at her son, "I am so proud of you and I know your father would be too." A look of concern flashed across his face. The knowing mother said, "You have to go" Clark nodded and was gone. Martha sighed as she turned once again to the flickering box. The lady reporter was recounting her account of the event. A protective mother spoke as if Miss Lane could hear her. "If you want him, you better be on your toes." Just then the red-haired boy returned and handed Miss Lane her missing shoe. "Thanks, Jimmy and thank you to the man who introduced himself as a friend,. For better or worse, the world has given him a name. This is Lois Lane reporting from the site of Superman's world debut, signing off." Martha Kent turned off the television.

      @@christianrapper5 Granted, but stories evolve. I can't begin to count the retcons in comics and other media. Many I don't agree with. This one I do. Batman calling himself such and having a bat icon on his chest makes perfect sense. Someone seeing what looks to be an "S" on a hero's chest and naming them Superman also makes sense. The "S" being an actual S does not make any sense, at all. Krypton was another planet. Why would they have any common letters or symbology with any part of Earth? It must be a coincidence (in-universe) and a contrivance by writers whose target audience was children and illiterate adults. That Jor-El wore the "S" well establishes it as a Kryptonian symbol and this part of the lore was carried over into many other tellings. Additionally, the "S" is only significant to people whose language includes an S. The closest the Russian alphabet has to an S is a C and what does an "S" even mean to a Japanese fan? To have it be a symbol that represents an idea is a change from the original that I can happily live with.

    The way I see it, you don't change a family crest. It's a seal of identity. It's like changing the Great Seal of the United States from a bald eagle to a chicken. I know this symbol was no doubt heavily influenced from the short-lived "Secundus DC One Million" design, but even that was course corrected.

    Whether the 'S' stands for Hope or not, is not that important to me. But Superman being a symbol of power that chooses to selflessly use that power to help other people: that is exactly what I want. Power in our world is continually shown to equate to corruption - with absolute power equalling absolute corruption; therefore the true superhero is the person that can somehow wrong-foot this trope and use the power entirely for other peoples benefit with absolute integrity. Great short clip: couldn't agree more. I want aspiration, I want hope (symbol or not, just the feeling), I want power given away for the benefit of others, I want selflessness. I want somebody who I can look up to and want to emulate - not in their abilities (strength, flight etc), but in their kindness, compassion, and commitment to taking the right path no matter how hard or unrewarding it is.

    People want the Donner cut to be better than it is because nobody likes the way the Salkinds treated him. That said, Superman: the Movie had comedy--loads of it, in fact--so it actually seems a little against Donner's own character to trim down Lester's as much as he did. It doesn't really feel like a completed movie. Then, worst of all, is Donner's decision to turn back time, again, like this is something Superman does whenever he wants a takeback. In the first movie, we hear his father warn him about interference. It pains him to do it; it's grueling and breaches Superman's ethical code but if he doesn't, Lois will die. In the Donner cut of Superman II, he does it so Lois won't remember his secret identity, as if turning back time is something he always does whenever he feels like he screwed up.

    I like to think it's the House of El symbol, and his mom made a copy of it (having seen it on the pod and his blanket and everything when he landed) when she sewed the costume to try and be supportive of his birth-culture and encourage him to wear it proudly. It would make his costume a real culmination of who he is and his two 'homes' that way. But that's just my guess.

    The Donner cut is terrible. The amnesia kiss might have been dumb but the way he turns back time, AGAIN, makes it like Superman just turns back time whenever he feels like it. It works in the first movie because you know it's something he never does for ethical purposes but he can't allow Lois to die. In Donner's cut, he just does it because Lois feels bad about their breakup.

    At the end of the day, it's S for Superman and has been since day 1. Ideally, it should be his deeds and his example that make it more than just a letter in a shield. I kind of prefer how it comes about in Byrne's Man Of Steel series where Lois calls him that, and then the Kents help Clark build the secret identities around it. Humble beginnings that lead to a legend. However, I'm also not immune to there being some cool mystique to the idea that it's the El family crest. Given that, I would say Ross's design for the S is, for me, the most believable as an alien symbol that also happens to look like an S in a shield.
