Scanning a Print
Sometimes we need to share a digital file of a printed image...for an awards or publication submission, for a critique or with friends or family. It's pretty easy to scan an 8x10 print, but what if you have something bigger...one your scanner can't accommodate.
In this video, I show you how to scan an 11x14 or larger print using two passes. Easy!

Using a Cutout Card to Tighten Composition
มุมมอง 4464 ปีที่แล้ว
An easy and low-tech way of tightening your vision and your resulting compositions is to use a cut-out card (or your hands) to zero in on the essence of your image. A card can also help determine camera position and identify the proper lens to match your composition. It takes the equipment out of the equation and puts you, the photographer, in the driver's seat.
Testing the Tonal Range of Your Digital Camera

Using Overlay Layers in Photoshop

There are multiple ways to achieve the same effect in Photoshop. This is one I find easy and helpful for dodging and burning without actually making any modifications to my background layer. It's particularly useful for doing a graduated burn on skies.
Creating a Custom Film Scanning Area Guide for Epson 700 and 800 series Scanners
มุมมอง 1.1K4 ปีที่แล้ว
The actual film-scanning area on Epson 700 and 800 series scanners is smaller than the scanning glass and is not very well defined. Here is a quick and easy way of making a custom Area Guide so you know exactly where to place your film for scanning!

    Thanks for the video. I am scanning with a V700 and noticed that I could not use the full scanning glass area to scan some old basketball magazines, so knowing that there are some limitations to the scanning area will allow me to figure out a new workflow to archive my magazine collection from my childhood. Cheers, Dave

    thank you Alan, very informative. I have some topics/questions I am saving up to schedule some time with you. Nothing too serious, just nagging issues with print quality and some computerized masking clarifications.

    Thank you for sharing this concise and useful information. Another artist who did the cardboard window thing: Gustav Klimt. His landscape paintings are almost always square and he'd figure out his cropping with a cardboard square. When he got tired of how they'd bend and lose their shape, he switched to one made from ivory - and that's awful darn posh as well as indicative of how much he used the technique. Lucky you; having spent time with Adams makes you some sort of tribal elder. No - thank YOU! 🐧

    Thanks Alan! You are setting the brightest area that you want detail in (not blown out) on zone 7.5 and let the shadows fall where they may, which is ok in this case. Recover the shadows in post. As an aside, I don't know about your Pentax meter, but my calibrated Pentax reads a full zone/stop different (lower, which requires a stop more exposure) than my spot meter on my Nikon digital. Have you tested your digital camera meter against the Pentax?

    • @AlanRoss
      @AlanRoss 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Pentax digital is ⅓ stop different from my Canon EOS M6 - with the Canon giving ⅓ stop less - so if the Canon is set at ISO 400, I need to set the Pentax at 500 :-)

    Reminds me of something I did in college with 9 images of the same scene, Something Round. Shoot over, normal, under, and develop over normal and under.

    Alan, what an epiphany your curves video has shown me. I have typically shied away from curves, mainly because I was not fully aware of how they can finesse an image. Now I know! Thanks for posting the video!

    What function do the coins serve? I saw a guy online who had an 8x10" jig made that was 1mm thick, which is where the scanner actually focuses (above the glass as they do on the Epson jigs). Another used coins to elevate the film over the glass... eliminates newton's rings. I have yet to find a place that can 3D print one (too big and too flimsy) so I may have to go to a machine shop and have one made by CNC.

      @AlanRoss 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The coins were simply little weights to help hold the corners of the film-window and film flat against the glass. I have the scanner settings set on "film with area guide" and haven't had any trouble with scan sharpness.
