20241227 Cadman Pool long walk
A long photo walk in a misty New Forest, starting pre dawn ending around midday. This was a bit of a scouting trip, hunting for an enclosure with older trees, & specifically one old oak named 'the elephant tree' that I had read about (but crucially, didn't know the exact location of).

However, this is showing the reality of doing this stuff. Sadly, we don’t get ideal light & beautiful subjects to take photos of every time just because we got up early & were out before dawn. The reality is that often the dawn light is not what we hope for, and you have to try and make do with the hand we are dealt on a given morning. I’m looking forward to hunting for the elephant tree again though, there are 3 different starting points, they all involve a significant walk to get to the woods where it’s meant to be. Hi Lawrence, just found you via Paul Baker's channel. I have subscribed and wish you all the best with TH-cam 😀. I noticed in your bio that when you shot film (you look to be of a similar age to me), you used Canon EOS cameras a bit. I still use them (DSLRs now) but I recently bought a couple of old EOS film cameras to have a bit of fun with and to bring back memories of my film shooting days.

    • @TheLDunn1
      @TheLDunn1 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Sarah, thank you so much for leaving a comment. What Paul did was really kind, I had no idea he was doing it until I watched his video! I still have all my old Canon gear, going right back to my first an Eos 620 which I got at launch around 1987 I believe. The Eos system launched in 1987 with the Eos 650 & Eos 620, but the 620 became available about 2 months after the 650 from memory. My father bought a 650 around the same time. I used the 620 for quite a few years, but then got the Eos 5, which again I used for quite a few years. Around 2001 I went on a 'round the world in 87 days' back packing photo tour, & bought a cheap Eos 300 because it was much smaller & lighter than the Eos 5, & I needed to offset the weight of a 17-35/2.8 & 70-200/2.8 that I was taking. In 2006 I migrated to digital with the Eos 20D, but I had become so dialled in with my lenses on 35mm film, I struggled at the wide end with the 20D, there just wasn't many options to get very wide back then, Canon offered a 10-22mm but it only covered the EF-S crop sensor, & back then, I felt that the crop sensor was just a temporary step before full frame came in, so I didn't want to put any money into EF-S lenses. So, when Canon launched the Eos 5D2, I jumped to that at launch, what a fanatastic camera that was for the time! Around 2011, I started getting into astro photography, & when out doing that, I would sometimes get the 5D2 out with a wide angle & shoot nightscapes from low down on the ground, that soon had me wishing for an articulated LCD. The 5D3, then the 6D, then the 5D4 came out all with no articulated LCD. The 6Dii did, but there were also negative comments in the reviews about other aspects of its performance which put me off, so I stayed on the 5D2 for close to a decade. Then over the Aug bank holiday in 2016, I had a Sony A7R2 on demo for a long weekend. It was my first expoerience of mirrorless & crucially, it had a tilting LCD (only in landscape sadly). I had a bit of a roller coaster long weekned shooting with that camera. The aspects I thought would be an issue were not, & aspects I'd not considered as issues were. Ultimately, I handed the camera back & said it wasn't quite there for me yet, but it was close, & there were many aspects that I found great. At the end of 2017, Sony launched the A7R3, I went to a photo show the local camera shop used to run just before Christmas & I was able to try out the A7R3, & they had addresses most if not all the aspects I had identified as an issue for me on the A7R2. Further, they let me try out my Canon 70-200/2.8 on the Sony with the Sigma adapter. & I was amazed that it focused as well as it did. Subjectively, it felt as fast as the 5D2 (maybe I should not have been too surprised, it was nearly a 10 year old camera by then), but it was way more flexible because it could focus anywhere on screen, where I had got very used to using just the central AF box on the 5D2 & focus/recomposing, because the central AF box was much better than the few others dotted around the central box. So I bought the A7R3 at the show with an adapter & predominantly used the Sony with my Canon lenses. Since 2017, I've slowly added a few Sony lenses, when they have been on a double sale & the price has been too good to let slip by. So I now have Sony 20, 24/1.4, 85/1.4 mk1 & 200-600. The 200-600 is the only one I'm reguarly using though, because I have a Fujifilm GFX 50R that I picked up used & quite cheaply, & I adapt lenses to that. I love using the GFX 50R, but its AF is not great. So I tend to use the Sony for wildlife, Sports, action where good AF & IBIS is beneficial, & I use the GFX 50R for static type subjects, predominantly where I'm on a tripod, so things like Landscapes. The two systems partner each other really well. Before I bought my first Canon, I was on the old Olympus OM film system, & that is where my love of photography developed (no pun intended). I did a photography O-level at college during this period & got seriously into shooting, deveoping & printing, having pretty much open access top the college dark room. It was a great time. but my Olympus gear was stolen from my parents house in 1987, which is what lead to the switch to Eos. Around 2008 I realised that people were ditiching their film SLR's to go digital, & I took a look at the price of OM-4 on ebay & was surprised how cheap they were, so I got one, &, cut long story short, it started an Olympus collection, I just love the cameras as objects, but the convenience of digital is too much of a draw for me (I currently have a roll of film in a Canon 7 rangefinder body that I put in in 2020, & still have not finished yet, & when I bought the film, I bought the developer & fix for it too). The Olympus prime lenses I collected, I adapted those to the Eos, then Sony, & now to GFX. I have quite a few old manual lenses, of all different makes, that I enjoy adapting & using on digital bodies. What has been you photographic journey? Do you live in/around the new Forest area?

    • @sarahneedham
      @sarahneedham 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TheLDunn1 Hi Laurence. That is some journey :) . So I am just a hobbyist really. Back in the late 80's I had a Praktica manual camera with just a 50mm lens. This is what I learnt the basics of photography on. I kept using that along with a little Canon point and shoot 35mm camera until around 2002. Then I really wanted to upgrade to an easier SLR camera, and as I liked my little Canon camera, I bought the EOS 30 which I loved! I also bought a number of EF lenses including the kit lens. I used this camera to mostly shoot photos of West Wales where I lived and my daughter when she was growing up. I used this camera until I literally broke it's back (door hinge) in 2012. I was gutted to be honest as then I really had no option but to go digital and knew I could only afford to go the APSC route. I did keep my full frame EF lenses though. So I got a second hand 400D which was ok but I never shot in RAW so never really got the best out of it. To be honest, I didn't shoot with it as much as I used when I shot film. Then fast forward to 2017 and I was in a position to trade the 400D in for a second hand 5D MK II which was amazing! To have full frame again was just so good. I sold most of my older EF lenses and got the 24-105 STM lens which I really liked. Then in January this year, I traded that body in for a 5D MK IV - again second hand from MPB. Got a great deal on it - £1300 mint with less than 9000 on the shutter. With it's box and all original stuff in. They even gave me a decent price for the old mark II as I had really looked after it. So then I treated myself to the 24-105 F4 MK II L lens plus I got the 16-35 F4 L and the 70-200 F4 L as well. All second hand mind you. I love the 5D4 even though it has a fixed back screen. For what I mostly shoot, it's fine and I love the camera so much, I forgive it that. I also bought a little 250D as a little carry around camera and that is a lot of fun. Got a few EF-S lenses for it too. A few months ago, I really wanted to shoot some film again so from eBay, I got an EOS 3 body which is bloody amazing and a little 500N body as a lighter option for film. The EOS 3 reminds me a lot of the 5D series of DLSRs I live in Swindon but travel down to that area quite a lot - Hengistbury, Swanage and the like. Love that bit of coastline. I have yet to venture into the New Forest though, but I intend to do that next year all being well.

      @@sarahneedham oh wow, we are not so different then! I'm just a hobbyist too & we both had a 5Dii. When I bought my 5Dii, there was a deal with its kit lens at the time, which was the 24-105/4, it made sense to buy the body with the kit lens, I could have sold the lens at the time sparately for more. I didn't have any plans to get the 24-105 so didn't plan on keeping it. but I started using it, &....ended up keeping it, its quite a useful lens if you just want to go out with one lens. I remember the Eos 3 - they were fantastic, I think I lusted after one at one point, but never got it, probably too expensive for me at the time. You have a nice line up of lenses there, the 16-35, 24-105 & 70-200. Up until recently, I favoured the 2.8 versions, but maybe as I get older &/or the cameras hi iso performance gets better, I'm starting to see the benefits of f4 lenses for the size & weight saving, plus, 70% of what I shoot is landscapes where I'm at f8-f13 ish anyway. I still like fast glass though, because it does give you some advantages still, just not as much as they used to. You should definitely plan to visit the New Forest next autumn for sure. I've not been out shooting since we had the storm a couple of weekends ago, & we have lots of wind today, so I doubt there is much left on the trees now, so opportunities may be less. I am anticipating shooting more coastal stuff during the winter. I have a base I can use near Weymouth/Portland, so I suspect I'll be shooting that region soon.

      @@ClearVista absolutely! I took very early retirement at end June this year, and I didn’t do much for the first month or two, I felt mentally knackered. It was a hard decision to stop working, I spent a year constantly trying to decide to go or stay. it was stressful trying to work out the optimum option to take, of many options on the pension side, all while trying to tie up lose ends at work, complete tasks, and hand over & train up the replacement for me who had been lined up. So when I did finally go, I just needed time doing relatively little to recover. Even now, 6 months later, there is part of me that questions if I should have gone when I did. I miss doing what I did, but, there were a number of aspects that had crept in over recent years which I’m glad to be rid of. But, it wasn’t long before I felt restless and wanted to get stuck into something, and here I now am, attempting to go out and do lots of photography and put out new videos each week. I’m enjoying it, I’m learning a fair bit on the video post processing side which I’m enjoying and getting frustrated with in equal measure! I’ve been waking up very early, 4 or 5 am quite often, so getting up for dawn’s not been much of an issue. I used to get up relatively early for work anyway, and every few months, had to get up at 4am to travel 125miles to visit a specific site. Think I’ve just got used to it. If you look at one of my early videos, the Alver valley one, that was summer, when I was working, and I went out and did dawn photography and got back in time to go to work. I am aware that I have a way to go on the editing / post processing side, and I have some thoughts and Ideas to help me develop on that side. I’m aiming to try and put out a video once a week, and each week I’m using it as an opportunity to try something new in the post processing and learn, but sometimes, I just have to draw a line under the post processing and move onto the next one, but I can feel the progression, even if I’m not at where I want to get to yet. However, what I like to call the ‘story telling’ part, the what I talk about on the videos when I’m out and what I video, that I’m really struggling with. I don’t have such a clear idea of what I should do or where I want to get to yet. I’m finding this aspect harder. You can watch TH-cam videos about how to do something in video editing packages like DaVinci Resolve, but, I’m not so sure that there are videos about how to learn ‘story telling’…maybe there are, it’s never crossed my mind until now to search for them. So you commenting positively about the detail I’m going into on the videos being inspiring is really appreciated! Thank you. It really helps motivate me to continue. I’ve been adapting lenses since around 2008, initially to canon eos, then to Sony Alpha, and now to Fujifilm GFX. Since 2008, I’ve collected many old & interesting classic & vintage lenses, I really enjoy using them on digital cameras. The Pentax 67 105mm f2.4 with the Kipon Baveyes 0.7x adapter has been a strong favourite since I first got it though, I find it hard to leave it behind when I go out shooting and take something else instead. I even have the GF110 which is a fantastic lens, but I’ve hardly used mine because of the Pentax! I do need to start using something other than the Pentax, just for a change if nothing else! @ you are bringing back many fond memories! We were only in Thailand a couple of weeks, as part of an 87 day, around the world trip. We just had a special airline ticket where we could make as many flights as we wanted, but, you had to keep going in one direction around the globe. So we flew from UK to Bolivia, made our way over land to Peru, flew from Lima to Mexico, went overland through Belize into Guetemala, then back into Mexico. Think we flew from North Mexico to LA, then from LA to NZ, then NZ to Singapore, then on to Vietnam, then to Thailand, overland from Thailand to Cambodia & back into Thailand. Then from Thailand to Nepal, overland from Nepal into India, and finally India back to UK. We spent around 2 weeks in each area/country we flew too. It was a fantastic experience. When we were in Thailand, I think we did a loop & visited Koh Chang, but, I’m struggling to remember now, white sands, turquoise waters anyway, paradise basically. I don’t know what you are interested in doing / seeing while you are away, but it was a big photo trip for me and we targeted the main tourist attractions. This resulted in visiting the sites of ancient civilisations a fair bit, which is ironic, because I never really enjoyed History at school that much! In my top 3 places / things we did/saw, Angkor Wat, near Siem Reap, Cambodia, where there are multiple temples of the Khmer civilisation, was in the top 3. If you have not been, I would really recommend going, you need at least two days there, possibly three. As this would be out of Thailand, you could use it to reset your visa too, and it’s only a days overland travel. I’m curious, why are you not confident about the future in the UK? What aspects are you concerned at? (I share your general sentiment though).

    Hi Lawrence, I've just come across your post on the 617 Club and have watched the video. Some really nice images there... I myself am just starting to explore around the New Forest as my daughter has just started studying at Winchester. I did drive past Milliford Bridge a few times recently when in and around Bolderwood and after watching this, I need to take a closer look I think. Anyway, thanks for sharing 🙂

    • @TheLDunn1
      @TheLDunn1 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @lightinthemeadow 🤣. In the video I uploaded last night, there were some very boggy areas, at times, I was having to be careful about water getting into my wellies, it was that bad. I’m rapidly coming to the conclusion that one of my most valuable photographic accessories are my wellies! They are just permitting me exploring areas where I would not even go in my walking boots, they do give you surprising freedom to not having to worry too much about where you are going. My wife bought me my wellies a few years ago, so I didn’t have an excuse not to go with her on dog walks in the autumn/winter when it gets really muddy, but I’ve found them so useful for photography out in the New Forest, the pair I have (Grubs, think they are the Frostline model I have) are surprisingly comfy & warm for me, which was pretty unexpected….first wellies I’ve had since I was a kid I think, and my prior experience was that they were relatively cold and uncomfortable things.

    • @lightinthemeadow
      @lightinthemeadow หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheLDunn1 For years I persisted with walking boots and gaiters as being the “proper” footwear. It was having kids that changed things - there was no longer any time to faff with footwear - just needed something that was quick on and off, and fairly maintenance free. Now I am complete convert to wellies and it has to be something pretty extreme to get me in to walking boots. Wellies are especially good on beaches, in streams, bogs, etc. I have upgraded to a pair with proper vibram soles after some sketchy moments on rocks by the sea. I agree, wellies are probably the most essential items after the camera and lens. 😀

    • @TheLDunn1
      @TheLDunn1 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ yes, that is the other benefit, the low maintenance of wellies! Just wish mine were a tad easier to take off when covered in mud!

It does help my motivation when people watch & comment that they enjoyed the video, although, I’m not sure if they are just being polite 😀 Are you a member of 617? Have you heard about it and wondered? Or is it totally new to you? If you have any questions about it I’d be happy to try and answer your questions. Last night, we had a Live video meet with Joe Cornish, who is recovering from a bad accident in a Scotland. Think it has made us all very aware of the risks we are in when we are shooting alone off the beaten track. On the prior two Mondays, Tom Heaton has done a 1.5 hour presentation from a recent shoot he did in Scotland, and the Monday before that Simon Baxter did a 1.5 hour presentation on his shooting. They have also had other guest presenters like Mike Mez & Nick Carver. All the online presentations have been excellent, I’m really getting a lot out of the club. We have also had multiple photo walk meet ups in the New Forest (near me) with other 617 members, which has also been very good too, very motivating to get out and shoot when there is a group of you.
