Shear pin release demonstration using a lighter 3mm pin
Mine arrived today! I have a bow electric also and had no second thoughts adding one of these anchors. I have experienced issues with drag with other style anchors and I hope this will hold better. The confidence of being able to drop it anywhere without concern for getting stuck is a huge bonus especially when boating alone or with small children. Product looks fantastic, well manufactured, packaged and I cant wait to give it a trial.
Just picked mine up today!
Yes please let steve test it for us.
Hi, can you get in touch, and send one to Mr SV Panope to do a anchor test and I'll be convinced, he has his own independent testing channel on TH-cam, but nevertheless it looks great. Interesting design, hopefully you do well from it, I wouldn't hesitate buying one all-bar a couple of questions. Q. What stops the sacrificial pin from shearing during normal use, eg. anchored overnight when asleep and the weather turns nasty, not sure if I'd sleep very well knowing that only a small pin which is designed to shear is taking majority of the load... Or the sacrificial pin has degraded or been compromised say over a few years of use, unbeknown to the average boater who doesn't check his equipment as often as the next guy. Gather the pin is 316 stainless, it does work harden over time. Cheers.
Hi @jb243wp , you bring up some very relevant questions that many people ask. I have seen Steve from SV Panope. He is very thorough and independent. Happy to send one to him for his assessment and happy to answer your questions. We are all about safety on the water. We make it very clear on our website, The Boomer All Terrain anchor is not a storm anchor. It was never designed to be a Super High Hold anchor. There are plenty of good quality anchors that do that job. It was purpose built to use as your primary anchor if you are a fisher man or woman out for a safe days fishing. It is also extremely capable as a mooring anchor for those days you want to pull up and have a picnic in a sandy bay. Overnighting is a personal choice, and understanding the thresh-hold of the pin holding the Boomer and your boat is the key. Things like having the correct length of chain become important, regardless of which anchor you use. There are many 5.5 ton boats and charter companies using our anchor, they also have more chain. After using the anchor for some time, many customers express how their confidence in its capabilities has risen so high that they use their anchor for everything, including overnighting. The pin can become fatigued over time, but the only time I find it necessary to inspect it is if I am hanging in to rocks in a precarious spot or before overnighting. Premature release is very rare if you choose the correct sized pin. We overnight regularly and have never changed our anchor in 6 years. 2 of those nights were bad storms, but the anchor never moved. We put in the largest pin and felt safe. However, it is a personal assessment of the conditions, and if there is doubt, put down your secondary overnight plough anchor. The supplied pins are zinc coated to break down to nothing. They can be easily replaced at a hardware store. Some folks use stainless steel pins, which have a slightly higher shear factor, but don't break down readily. Hope this answers your questions. Cheers
@@boomeranchors5774 Thank you for your reply, much appreciated. I'm guessing from what you are saying that the product comes supplied out of the box with a carbon steel zink plated pin or bolt, gathering that would only be a 4.6gr tensile strength as this will allow the shearing off if required. Potentially, both from a consumer and you as the supply, another good option that may be piece of mind is to supply it out of the box with a 2 pin option, both in zink plated, but a higher tensile strength 8.8gr pin... 8.8gr has generally a higher shearing factor than stainless in most cases and do come in zink plated. Potentially testing would be required to determine this due to straining factors, hole size compared to actual pin size etc, yes as you mentioned chain length, and weight does playa part.. Maybe film some physical testing in different scenarios, mud, sand rocky bottom.. I had a Sarca Ex-cel #5 on my last boat, I could not fault it in any way, in any condition, but I did have half as much chain again as recommended for my vessel.. Nothing worse than constant worry while you boat in anchored up, specially if it's unmanned or your camping overnight. But I think you are on to something, the quality looks great. Best of luck with it 👍
Interesting concept.
Reefs are crying
Old farts gone fishin, use of Native related music , very sad.
We weren't sad at all. We were happy old farts who like Yothu Yindi, ACDC, Gangajang, Willie Nelson and Fleetwood Mac. ❤
The intro is like a feature length movie! LOL, how much did you pay Yothu Yindi and ACDC?
Mike Cunningham makes it look like hard work to catch a barra there, you fellas slayed it. Well done
Those things are kinda like a cross between a tarpon, snook, and a redfish!
Yum!!!!
Some good Barra caught guys 😊. Looks like an awesome trip. I can't wait to get back up there. Thanks for keeping me keen to go and Nibby just needs a bit more netting experience and he will do just fine.🤣👍
good music at intro , goodo
Looks like the bell family were there
Cool ep and nice fish
Looks like you had a great trip. Plenty of nice fish caught. 👍 And that bloody boat ramp! They have now dug out thousands of tons of sand and the ramp is back to normal.
Owgoodwazat 🤠. Great fishing ,enjoyed the sound tracks 😎heading up in October for 8 nights .. hope to half as good as you guys !
First time the wind veered or vessel swings 180 at anchor I bet it’s own chain will foul the anchor.
Just a quick grab from our King Ash Bay Adventure. Full drop coming soon.
Entire vessel and lives of all on board can be at risk when propulsion is lost in high seas. In this situation the anchor must be able to grab and hold bottom to pull the bow to face the oncoming waves and swell. In these conditions the tensile shear impulse loads on the pin have the potential to cause the anchor to release from the bottom and it then being certain that it cannot bite in again. What load/ stress modelling has been done to factor in wave height, water depth, rode anchor/ rope composition, hull weight, hull buoyancy, hull sail effect etc? Unless this has been comprehensively done, how can sale of this design be justified?
As a qualified engineer, I find the promulgation of this design extremely concerning. A loss of propulsion in high seas can lead to swamping and capsizing unless the anchor is quickly dropped and absolutely holds bottom, to pull the bow to face into the oncoming waves and swell. The range of variables contributing to the cyclical and impulse tensile loads on the anchor stem and therefore the shear pin in these conditions, are almost impossible to accurately simulate. I therefore respectfully enquire how this design has been proven safe for use in such emergency conditions.
Can't wait to get mine 👍
There are only a few scenarios where your anchor can be used to save your vessel and the lives of all on board. One of them is when you lose propulsion in rough conditions and need to immediately drop anchor to pull the bow into the oncoming sea to stop swamping and/or capsizing or stop being swept onto reef / rocks. Once the anchor bites in such conditions, shock / impulse tension forces along the line of ground tackle pull can be tremendous. If the selected shear pin happens to operate in these conditions, you are back in peril with no possibility of the anchor reconnecting with the bottom. No thanks!
You're being unfair mate - finding fault when you don't REALLY know cheers 👍
@johnwilkinson8018 I am a dual qualified engineer with over 35 years of experience in force vector analysis. Please articulate in what way my comment is unfair. Please include specifics on cyclical and peak tensile loadings on the rode relative to variables including wave and swell height, hull sail effect, depth, rode length etc. Then explain the engineering validity of a brake design where the brake is deliberately constructed to fail when the braking effect is needed most. Otherwise, I have also been the primary investigator in dozens of product liability cases and can assure you, this design is a prosecution teams dream.
I am obviously missing something here. In the event of unavoidably needing to drop anchor and ride out rough conditions, say in the event of no fuel or other motor issue, it is obviously essential that the anchor stays connected to the bottom. How does the design of the Boomer ensure that repeated shear load on the pin (during cyclical violent lifting of the bow) does not cause loss of traction at the worst possible time?
Can this be used for 4x4 cars driving in sand?
It hardly showed the sarca in comparison.
Mate if you don't mind what river are you on I have been to the limmen river and looking for some new areas. Thanks.
Trip of a lifetime, if you love the bush😀
The boomer anchor has been great for me. I fish outside mainly solo , and it allows me to control the release from the helm safely .Also it's a lot easier to replace another pin than to try to bend a traditional pronged reef anchor. Thanks to all that has put thought ,design and practicality to create a very versatile safe anchor.
Great to know that it works on live coral.
Clever idea!
This anchor has a number of significant improvements on current anchoring options for your boat. It all adds up to a much safer, less stressful, more efficient use of your fishing time and hopefully a more successful fishing/boating trip.
Holding looks terrible
Why not actually show the trial? It would be a better demonstration than a verbal description.
EXCELLENT VIDEO DEMO.........all the way into a CAVERN also!
Thankyou Captain Dave
That might be true but you also use a running float with the Mooloolaba Reef Pick to put sideways pressure on the tie to break it .
HI ALL THE WAY FROM THE CARIBBEAN ISLAND OF TRINIDAD. LOVELY VIDEOS. BEAUTIFUL WATERS AND VIEW. MORE VIDEOS PLEASE.HAVE A LOVELY DAY AND BEST WISHES.
So what you are saying is, you have designed an anchor to fail when it needs to hold.
Thanks mini696 , that's not what we are saying. The release is a fully tested measurable force that is more consistent and reliable than other release methods. If you start with a lighter pin and it releases a bit too easily for your boating/fishing conditions, you simply go up to a heavier pin till you find that perfect sweet spot that holds your boat in all conditions, and only releases when it gets stuck and you have to power forward to break the pin. Hope this helps. Cheers
@@boomeranchors5774 thx its alot safer to burst a line like this into a freak wave too I would hope?
What a stupid comment 🤦🏽♂️
Perfect can't wait for One to be On My boat
Good video mate can't wait to get One soon
That anchor is stuck fast 👍
Thanks for all your support Tyrone👍
You guys have certainly done your home work on this one.
The field tests are interesting. You guys must have had lots of fun with the trials.
Watched many of your videos. Very impressive anchor indeed.
Very clever anchor design.
Well done Meg. Having a polished finish helps to see it too.
No brainer anchor right there. A must have anchor.
Well done with the design fellas.
