มุมมอง 541หลายเดือนก่อน
First released: October 30, 2023 As voted for by you, this episode is all about #GaryNuman's 1984 album Berserker, and in particular its title track and lead single. The episode delves into its inspirations, from '60s sci-fi books to 1984's biggest hit single, and Gary's own fantastical ideas. It also looks at the album and tour's striking blue and white imagery, Gary's turn to sampling and its...
Gary Numan - Don't Be a Dummy (Lee Cooper Advert) | Electric Friends Podcast
มุมมอง 1.2Kหลายเดือนก่อน
For this episode of Electric Friends, I look back at one of #GaryNuman's first ever projects - a TV advert jingle! Gary recorded a short track called 'Don't Be a Dummy' for Lee Cooper jeans, which became very popular in 1979, just before he found fame with 'Are Friends Electric?'. This episode delves into the making of the song, why Gary didn't record a full version, the cover single by John Du...
Gary Numan - Here in the Black explained | Electric Friends Podcast
มุมมอง 220หลายเดือนก่อน
First released: 15th Oct 2023 By the late 2000s, #GaryNuman had become a father to three girls, and his career had been better than ever. However, for various reasons, he found himself with serious bouts of depression. This depression led to the writing of his next album, 2013's Splinter. One such track that tackled the themes of depression and life apathy, was the epic 'Here in the Black'. Thi...

First released: 26th Sep 2023 "Now it's all over for sure, I'll walk back home..." In 1981, #GaryNuman said goodbye to his fans with his epic Wembley shows, which was meant to be his retirement from live performance (thankfully, it wasn't). The year before, he had recorded 'Please Push No More', a piano-synth ballad that dealt with his feelings about fame, fans and critics. This episode tells t...

First released: 1st Sep 2023 In 2000, #GaryNuman released his most industrial album yet, Pure. Well received by critics and fans, it was arguably his best LP for nearly two decades. Bowie said in Q magazine in 2000 that the Gary Numan story was "apocryphal" and told Q "If he were asked not to come onto the set, it would have been during rehearsals. I do remember having told the studio people that he was welcome to come in for the actual shoot. He never appeared." So somewhere in the middle is the truth.

Love Numan, Are Friends Electric is still killer even now and probably my favourite Numan song, maybe because I remember it on TOTP back in 79. Blew me away then, still blows me away now.

Really like this track. Still sounds fresh now. There a couple of versions with production differences in the song I have heard. When the song “Clocks” by Coldplay came out I thought instantly they had lifted ( stolen) the main riff from this track.

Thank you for this. Seminal track, a great b side too. I loved that period, the Video with the corvette stingray. He looked the part, hard to fathom the resentment around his success. Press were so evil, I grew up close to Heathrow too, so Gary was talked about locally, either loved or despised. I remember rushing to buy the Album Telekon on its release in Woolworth. Loved the Artwork, knew and still do all the lyrics. Kenny Everett show then was massive. Bowie was confused towards Numan. I think jealous, and insecure. But then maybe because Numan was at his heights, and even with the vitriol of press, his music was selling. Numan was unique, no one could place him alongside anything else. I then went off Bowie after that, never purchased any of his stuff after Ashes to Ashes.

Bloody disgrace, the way he was treated ... I hated NME, melody maker and sounds ... I remember the nonsense on the Everett show and Bowie's so called inferiority complex, which annoyed me as I liked them both and still do ... Great song and Telekon is still one of his best .

I completely agree. The more that the NME, Sounds and MM tore into Gary, the more the Numanoids dedication to him deepened. Those "journalists" are yesterdays men, long gone and forgotten. Numan by contrast, will always be remembered and loved 🖤

Great song and album. Loved the b-sides from this era. She Cries was a demo from the warriors sessions that he’d finished for the Berserker sessions and originally This Ship Comes Apart which was a 1985 Call out the dogs b side was actually an unfinished song recorded for the Berserker album as it appears on the initial track listing he shared with fans in spring 1984. Also to correct Berserker was never released on CD in its initial release and wasn’t until 1991 when he decided to release his Numa back catalogue on CD was it available on CD.

The Damned did a send up of Gary Numan very early (1979?) , they recorded a John Peel session and did a medley of known songs , this snippet was entitled “Gay Bars” …. Largely based on the “Cars” riff it also dipped into the “Don’t be a Dummy” song towards the end …it’s only about 90 seconds long. In this age they would never be able to get away with it but at the time it was a bit of fun Here’s the link to it on TH-cam th-cam.com/video/N1oGTxtLWAg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=vhhSxsUJzpU2J4t-

While still a hundred times better than much of the dross that is out there, this album cements Numan' s descent into...kisch pomp rock. What Mr Numan seems to have forgotten is the Less is More principle. To express dark emotions you don' t need to whisper or yell - both risk sounding lame. You just need some well chosen lines. You don' t need to stuf your songs with adjectives to show people you can read ( leave that to Peter Hammill). You don' t need explanatory subtitles after your album' s title ( the audiencecwill work it out). A few good lines casually inserted into an otherwise compised song will do the job. Here are some from his " middle petiod': ' I can' t sing, I can' t dance/ I" m too old, I" m too thin' ' Listen, do you think I don' t know/ I ' ve got a face like metsl and a radio". " You waited for me/ you nade a mistake/ I' ll give you nothing but lies, or nothing at all' Chilling , prrovocative lines scatteted around swinging tracks wuthout need for emphatic theatrics.

  • @edwardcrabtree4824
    @edwardcrabtree4824 หลายเดือนก่อน

For me, the standout piece on this album is 'The Pleasure Skin' . This number - with it' s spooky paranoid ambience and narrative lyrics - represents the much needed missing link between the earlier Science Fictional Numan with its evocation of a world of androids - which made his name - and the later ( unjustly derided) electrofunk period whuch " The Fury' presaged. "Pleasure Skin' is a hugely underrated song - atmospheric wjth a premise behind it but still functioning as a rock song for al that. If there had been more songs like this in his so called " middle period' then his earlier fans mught have felt a tad less left out.
