  • This episode was first released as a podcast in August 2023. Here is the video version for the first time.
For this episode of Electric Friends, I catch up with Tubeway Days singer and #GaryNuman impersonator Chris Fielding.
I first saw Chris Fielding when he appeared as Gary on Stars in their Eyes back in 1998, and was amazed at how close he looked and sounded like him.
Fast forward to 2020, and Chris joined the lineup of the excellent Gary Numan tribute band Tubeway Days. Specialising in the 1979-81 era of Numan, the band and Chris sound exactly like the real thing and are a must-see for all Numan fans.
Chris talks about his love of Gary Numan growing up, how he got into impersonations and performing, what the Stars in their Eyes experience was like, meeting Gary, and what's coming up next for the band.
You will also hear snippets of Tubeway Days' excellent covers of Gary Numan songs, including 'Cars', 'Down in the Park', 'Remind me to Smile' and more.
A big thank you to Chris Fielding for his time and for a brilliant interview, and to Steve Guard for arranging.

Chris is a top Numan impersonator. I've seen Tubeway Days a couple of times and boy do they put on a good show. Next best thing to seeing Numan himself.

Having seen excerpts of Tubeway Days on youtube, I'm looking forward to seeing them head up to the north west of England, in the near future.

This is brilliant, and well deserved. Tubeway Days are magnificent. Would be interesting to get Paul
Hurst on to understand what goes into recreating the original analogue sounds.

Yeah, his 'On Broadway' is pretty much a perfect rendition, how he does that I do not know!

I was lucky enough to have seen Numan at the Liverpool Empire in '79, Deeside in '80 and Wembley '81. Numerous times after too. I was also at the Tubeway Days show at Capstone Theatre, Liverpool on May 11th this year.
All I can say is that if you like Numan of that era, do yourself a favour and see Tubeway Days. You absolutely won't regret it. They are magnificent. The look. The stage. The sound. Just brilliant. The added bonus being they seem to be a great bunch of lads too.
I see concert ticket prices were mentioned in the interview. Initially I thought they were a little pricey for a tribute band. On attending, I'd say they were probably too cheap. Amazing value for money.

Yep. concur with this comment totally, I was at the Teletour Hammersmith and a couple of Wembleys and this band nail that era. Like Chris I am totally pedantic when it comes to the sound and, as a result, I detest cover bands but the 'old' Tubeway Days totally nailed the sound and, with Chris, the vocals now too. I remember SITE and thought 'this guy is a massive fan' - not only was the voice almost perfect but he had the mannerisms and the subtle Numan nuances from those early gigs.
I've not seen them yet but I will do...

As Chris mentions, while his own voice is great, it's the band's sound that is truly amazing. Can't imagine a better tribute band.

this tribute act is just uncanny. Numan's voice is unique, no one else sounds as close as this bloke. too bad I'm on this side of the pond, I play fretless bass. :3

Hey Chris, like to just commend you and thank you indeed. Your shows are incredible. Lucky me, but i was a young teenager when Gary released the Pleasure Principle. Totally hooked ever since. My only slight problem these days is that back in the mid 90s I found myself getting a faith: Been a Christian ever since. That said, i still love hiis music ... but i have to steer clear of tracks which 'summon demons': pray to Satan and blaspheme my Lord. (Im privately hoping that someone, some day will re-mix PRAY to be just an instrumental because i absolutely adore the sound of that track but i can't listen to the prayer which is addressed to the demons of the darkness). Hope you get where I'm coming from. Take care all. God speed.
