This channel strips psychology down in four ways:
1) For students - encourage discussion of the key skills students need to succeed in the psychology degree and in their professional careers
2) For tutors - encourage discussion of the key skills academics in psychology need when teaching at university
3) For tutors & students - encourage discussion of the cultural and political dimensions of psychology - who benefits most from what psychology does?
4) For anyone not at university but still interested in psychology- removing barriers to entry into psychology at university by posting my university teaching videos for the public to view.

Post Office Scandal - The Alice Perkins Apology
I take a deep dive into the apology read out by Alice Perkins (former chairman of Post Office Limited board) at the Post Office Horizon IT inquiry. I consider what was wrong with her apology for us and what was right about it for her.

Excellent
The tendency to acknowledge important, indeed fatal, counter-arguments and then just ignore them needs further explanation. It has been very evident during the PO Horizon Inquiry. On questioning people admit that it was always possible that the system had failed, but then ignore that knowledge to assert that, nonetheless, it hadn’t failed. The IT people knew Horizon was not infallible. The investigators and lawyers knew they had no evidence of actual theft. The whole edifice of prosecution was built on sand, but they just carried on. And many of them still insist on the SPM’s guilt!
The TV drama was good at storytelling but, inevitably, simplified matters. Worth a read for more detail is Nick Wallis' The Great Post Office Scandal. Wallis has been with the unfolding story from the early days. Also worth following up is Computer Weekly, a UK trade publication which started following and reporting on the matter in 2009.
Just a couple of clarification for some facts you've stated in the video 1. Fujitsu purchased ICL (international computers limited, UK answer to IBM) in 1990s and the Horizon system was designed and developed by them for other UK government digital systems, but was "rubbish" (read that as NOT robust) so they pushed it into the post office. So bad decisions from the beginning. 2. It might have been the biggest rollout of IT systems by the government, but most of the big banks had rolled out much larger and complex ATM and POS systems since 1980s, and in fact I believe that is why ICL was involved from the start.
Post office should never have been a Ltd company by itself???? This is massive blunders by our idiotic government ministers???? They were given toooooooo much freedom to fraud, lying, arrogant, morons, conspire to criminality etc. And the Chancellor paid them bonuses from the public coffers for criminality??? What kind of moron is Chancellor!!!!!!!!!!! Kuasi Kueteng!!!!!
An they wonder were the phrase all the old cronies come from
Prosecution please
Worthless parasite, just like her husband Jack Straw, who got her the job. Jail her for her incompetence.
Thanks very much for this.
Water, energy and railways next?
It's so past pitchfork time it really is. How much longer are we going to sit idly while they smugly lie caring not 1 iota for the misery & suffering they've caused? If the System offers the people no justice then what are we to do? Keep wringing our hands & posting angry comments?
Pathetic arrogant woman styal or Holloway take your pick
Two chips off the same uncaring block of moral turpitude! Jail time should be their reward!
Monsters, who the lives of others means nothing, and nothing will happen to them, as always.
Was her son a proved drug pusher?
Fascinating history and account. Thank you.
Husband a war criminal, son convicted drug dealer. She's a post office criminal. Lovely family.
Am I right to think that Vennells is being just a tiny bit duplicitous?
this apology is not from the hart, it's a prepared speech from other people. jail goal prison pick one
she needs to go to jail
Their only regret is being found out, certainly not for the poor sub post people whose lives they ruined and, in a few cases, ended
It is not just that the Post Office blamed the sub-postmasters/sub-postmistresses but that is not the whole truth. The other half is that in British Law of the time, the records presented by a computing system were (perhaps still are) assumed to be the black-and-white truth.
Madam, your tears have no value.
The main question might be: why has this happened? What was the key pivotal reason?
I think we all remember Hancock expressing his emotions on television when the first vaccine was given. Now we all now the immense damage it has done to the human race.
Dreadful manipulation by Vennels.
I have only heard evidence of Horizon software glitches and bugs that have discovered supposed shortfalls in the cash balances of Post Office Subpostmasters accounts. I have always thought that a bug in any system might be equally likely to produce errors that introduce money where it doesnt belong. Have there been any instances discovered where there is more cash in the till (so to speak) than there actually should be according to Horizon? I cant believe that all SPM's would just pocket an illegitimate credit balance without raising this with the Post Office.
She won't end up in prison but I wish there was some way she could be made to pay for her crimes.
Van Den Bogus is a tough match, an ice cold arriviste.
Been following all the clips from the post office find it so interesting , I would love to here what you think of the recent inquiry on George Thompson .
Am already working on it! Hopefully will have a video ready by the end of the week. At the moment ... it's not looking like I am going to be too complementary towards him! :) p
I've only watched 30 or so of the cross examinations of the inquiry, but what does seem to be the case, not uncommon in large organisations, is most of those directly involved in the prosecutions and senior managers, the latter until the Second Sight reports implications started to be more widely disseminated and processed, were unaware of crucial information. A few, such as Singh, presented as more transparently incompetent, dishonest, 'prejudiced', or intent on covering up errors to retain his position, knowing previous errors should have led to dismissal, or now potential proseution. As an aside what the inquiry does not seem to be focusing on is how the PO's conduct - including more external legal representatives - stance was being reinforced by court judgements yet despite this, as far as I can tell, Judges who convicted the ''innnocent'' are not being cross examined at the inquiry. Why?
Perkins: indulgent deflection and passive-agressive denial; that's what is evident.
Vennells: Deliberate, carefully constructed obfuscation.
I love the legal dissections that seem so innocuous...until they aren't! Also, Professor, your own whittling away of dross or subtifuge is enlightening, so thank you.
Thank you for your excellent submission to this channel. Your conclusions were spot on.
Thanks so much. I really appreciate you encouragement. It really helps me to keep going. p
It is very interesting to analyse. Such texts should be done at GCSE level, to teach students what's hidden behind som "apologies", and because it is interesting from a legal standpoint.
the three witches at the top around their caldron of big bonuses and big fat wages ! we can not let little people stop us from getting at this lot !
A disgraceful and incredible performance by a scheming and forked-tongued web-weaver with no thought other than for her own entitled self evading her clear responsibility. Her demeanour did change to one of a bored teenager and this will not have gone unnoticed by Sir Wyn.. If it were up to me she would be thrown in prison for her malpractices but I'm sure the inquiry will find some other just punishment...
class action law suit
the union are a scandal also.
United kingdom is a scam.
"I'm more sorry THAN I CAN say". No apology there.
She just doesn’t understand……
Dr Paul, I’ve found your videos really informative and enlightening. Everything you highlighted about POL as an institution and then a Corporate applies to most businesses these days in the way they operate. I admire the composure of the victims of this scandal and wish them all well. A great learning discussion point that shows many perspectives and ways of seeing. You students are very lucky to have such an insightful, objective pedagog. I look forward to watching other videos. All the best 😃👍
Vennels ? Van der Bogarde? A pair of dessicated grifters , oily cheesy looking scrubbers who clearly show up the pitfalls of hiring deliquescent rubbish on the grounds of age or having a fanny , however recroqueville it is...both of these hags are surely looking at court dates
Another insightful video; thank you.
Thank you, I appreciate your perspective.🙂
Another vulgar, “but the buck did not stop with me” person. Hopefully destined to a long jail sentence
The mantra WAS and still IS, contempt......And the apologies ARE difficult, BECAUSE they are NOT sincere.....
