Range day! Testing mini buckshot and slug loads!
มุมมอง 2.6K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's the results from the last loading vidoe of making mini buckshot and slug loads. Fast burning (target) powder is what you need. Remember, velocity isn't everything. I probably should have decreased powder charge by 2-3 grains or went with a powder faster than Red Dot. Let's Talk About Roll Crimpers!
มุมมอง 20K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This video compares the one-pin roll crimper from Ballistic Products to the 4-pin roll crimper from The Reloader's Network. I've used BPI's roll crimper in both 12 and 20 ga for many years, however, The Reloader's Network finishes your loads just a little better. Finishing out your cast buckshot

Here's a couple methods I do to remove the sprue marks, lead flashing, mold lines, and to make my buckshot more round. Rounder buckshot makes for better patterning loads.

interesting. thanks for the info.
That's the nicest reloader I've seen yet awesome
Now that Nick Ross/TRN is no longer offering these, what would be the next best option? A slight taper plus roll crimp would be ideal, as I’m shooting both pumps and autos. Slugs, buckshot and even some birdshot with overshot cards. Looks like Precision Reloading has a 4-pin one? The GAEP options seem REALLY spendy, according to eBay 😅
Gaep or OMV. Pricey but worth it! Check out Ballistic Products. They have them
Dumb question, anyone ever make hard cast buckshot? Thinking about bear and I use hard cast in my pistols but have never seen it in buckshot.. thanks!!
All commercial buckshot is hard cast. You should always use hard alloy for casting buckshot. Patterns better.
I wish more people would of watched this, people are still saying that winchester went to the hs hull for safety reasons. LOL, Winchester went cheap with their shells and guns about the same time. Its a shame because they used to make some really nice shot guns and shells.
The cutaway is good, too actually see what's in them.
Perfect shot placement by your boy!
THANKS!! do the pins need adjustments? I was wondering how the solid ones with no pins compare
I bought a four pin right off the best years ago. Awesome crimps. They only issue i have is I get some that wrinkle. Mostly Winchester 10 gauge hulls. Don’t know if sis t have enough lube or they are just weak hulls? Remington and federal roll great. Chedite normally does ok but I need a lot of vasoline applied with a Qtip in my crimper.
Three of the Steel loads at 100 looked like they weren't stabilized and went thru sideways. Love your content.
Shotgun Hulls
What do you use for wads for your slugs
13.:46 "Fast lead wide spread, slow lead kills dead" 🌶
Really cool press. Been reloading for nearly two decades and never come across one of those.
I solved ALL my foster slug problems by going to the Lyman .705" 475gr slug. Unsurpassed accuracy even at 100 yds.
Found you....subscribed now.
Sorry if I missed it, but were all loaded with 18 grains?
Apparently they’ve been discontinued.
Went to the reloaders network site to buy a 12 ga. quad pin crimper, no longer avaliable whats up. ?
The beard 👍
I’m thinking of putting this on a home defense shotgun so I don’t have to rely on hard to get buckshot like Flight Control. Would you have to remove this to shoot slugs? Fantastic video. Thanks.
Upvoted Brother. Subscribed, bell rung, commented, upvoted, liked, shared .... may the algorithm gods smile favorably upon your channel. Keep preparing for what is comings, where the evil democrats are taking us. We will win this thing.
Kinda man-handled (didn't wait for it to heat up a lil bit) the BPI crimped shell, but still make an okay crimp. 👍
Seems like the factory full choke may be just as good imo
Could very well be! I have loads where my factory mod outperforms all others. That’s why it’s important to pattern your loads.
@@buckandslugreloaders9005 have you tried the federal flight control wad?
Just catching a few of your videos on lunch after a couple weeks of BRO & Shotgun Scientist. Look for to more videos. 👍
Have heard your FB group recommended on another shotshell reloading group. Didn't know you had a YT channel. 👍 Hadn't heard that saying @13:45. Good to know.
I see you have powder migration not good
Nice video and resourcefulness! Thank you! You didn't have to call your son out like that about the camera, though. I'll assume you were messing with him. 😂
I just reloaded my first 410 000buck loads. I used a ballistic products roll crimper and attempted to roll crimp them. Theh did not look super pretty and the top of the crimp was more flat then roynded over. They fit in the gun ok. Well see if they print worth a damm at 15 yards or so. Wish me luck.
Well, how'd it go? With the number of different roll crimping tools out there it seems to be a matter of how basic to how pretty you want your roll crimps to be. Standard deviation differences excluding.
Awesome lil'loads man
Take drive key out tiy mold shut weat sandpaper spin mold on finger. I was working on turkey loud 20 Ga. Hall yes it fits in 12 Ga. Hall crimp up & down cont spread at 50 yards.
Thank you for sharing, very interesting. Best ballistic test ever.
Thank you for watching
Hi. Love your video. Just got a 590 Shockwave and very interested in loading short shells. Which model of roll crimper do you use? Did you get it from BPI? I just found their website and they had more choices than I expected. I'll just be using it for shorty 12 ga. Thanks.
Excellent video! Thank you
Rectifire is actually just up the road from me in Allendale S.C.
I have a kicks xtra full for #1 and 4 ...but honestly my patternmaster code black duck NEVER comes out my benelli...that gun /choke just works from my dove loads to duck to buck...it loves cheap federal powershok 15 pellet 00 all 15 everytime...also will throw all 10 federal premium copper coated 000 in a pie plate at 50 yrds...i like that i know how my gun shoots everytime instead of having to change up chokes...gotta put in the time like you have and PATTERN your gun...find what it likes stock up and dont change.
I'm guessing you could use the gas seal cut from a regular shot wad in place if the actual BP gas seal? Have you pressure tested these by chance. Curious to know how the pressure runs. Thanks.
I'll 2nd (pressure testing) the question. One of the loads/shell lengths that got me looking into the hobby.
Are you a Marine if so SEMPER FI ,ARINE AND THANK YOU. An old Army MP vet here.
Graphite is also used by locksmiths.
thanks good work we needed this
Are these wads still attainable? Thanks.
I have about 10k of them.
How you cast your slugs so shiny? I use pure lead for my slugs and they are kinda dull grey
How do these do in a Remington 870? I noticed your overall length is slightly longer which a 870 would prefer
They ran fine in my Tac-14.
6 pellets 00 is 0.645ounce 21 pellets #4 is 0.99 ounce 20 pellets #4 is 0.94 ounce For 1¾" shells you will run out of room with plastic gas seals and buckshot. I use cardboard over powder, no wad and just 20#4 pellets. ⅞ounce slugs I use x12x and part of a spacer wad wrap slug in part of the trimming 0.690 RB BPGS wrap in trimming.
There’s not standard for buckshot weight. It all depends on the alloy they were swaged or cast. Normally, my buckshot runs lighter than factory because I like my buckshot hard. As for using a nitro card or cardboard disk over powder, that’s an option. I don’t go that route because: 1. I’m in Texas and it’s dry as hell. Everything can catch fire. 2. I have thousands of gas seals. Anyway, thanks for tuning in!
He’s running them slightly longer than 1.75”, a crimped 1.75” will be 1.45-1.55”…. His finish length is 1.8-1.9” which allows room for a seal
Hello, i could use a bit of help. Im shooting a Remington 1100 with a 22inch slug barrel with rifles sights. It a smooth bore with what im assuming is a cylinder bore choke. Im using AA gray 2.75 hulls and claybuster 1138-12 wad and hornady OO buck. This is for defensive proposes and im patterning for 15 yards. My goal is a tight 6-8 inch pattern. Ive tried blue dot, red dot and longshot powders but my patterns just wont geg to where i need them to be. Dont get me wrong the loads ive tried worked fine but are giving me 10 inch or slightly more at 15 yards and keeping most shot on a human torso target. Unfortunalty there were some questionable fliers that i cant have. I have used 9 pellets as well as 8 pellets. I have used the full wad and also cut the pedals off. Ive tried buffer and no buffer. All this changed the patterns slightly but not enough. Do have any thkughs on how i can tighten things up to where i need them.
Hey brother, thanks for watching. In your situation, your weak point is your fixed cylinder bore choke. Your only other option is to can think of at this point is using a flight control wad. I’ve bought waterfowl loads using them on clearance at the end of season just to demill them for the wads. Now, that’s not the most economical way, but if you only a few, that’s what I’d do.
Can I shot slugs if needed sometime not always with light full choke kick ?
I like this rounds for the ranch for black bear protection.
I hope you redo this video sometime. Good info but your camera skills and microphone sound sucked.
I made one out if a socket and a car boty bolt and nut then used a grinder to take the 6 point off then bolt all together and then put a pin or not me no pin. i go off heat. One question how come people put so long of screw 🪛 on the slug to wad. I guess see this alot. Dont you want the wad to crush. because i see it mostly don't crush with so ling of screws that go throw hafe ways though the wad. I just thought 💭 what I've been seeing on video's.
Sick m8. Tuning in from the UK
