Pelagic Expeditions & Vinson of Antarctica visit Zavodovski Island deep in the S. Atlantic Feb 2023
The Vinson of Antarctica wrapped up her deep south season on February 18th 2023 upon the completion of our science support role on Zavodovski Island in the South Sandwich Island chain. This slideshow is of Skip's second voyage to the South Sandwich, having been there on Pelagic Australis in January 2020. On that occasion we had a multi-faceted science and film team managing to land on four of these remote islands, all with difficult landings. The one we could not land on at all was Zavodovski, the most northern of the group and which is a veritable fortress with no viable beaches to land on and only one weakness in the fringing cliff face, identified by Jerome Poncet on Damien II, decades ago. On that occasion it was too rough to even contemplate a landing and Dr. Tom Hart from Oxford Univeristy managed to do four drone flights from the vessel, to census the entire colony of penguins - quite a feat! But more information was needed, hence a return this January 2023.

So have you studied the bluish ice from the firmament dome that they are hiding from the masses. They have drilled into it, only to have it close back up about as fast as they can drill into it. Antarctica is not an island, it is an ice ring wall so to speak. It is roughly 60,000 miles in circumference. Our world is a giant circular horizontal plane, enclosed by a giant solid blue dome, it is not a sphere/ball called a planet. The masses are slowly awaken- ing. We have been indoctrinated & lied to for a very long time.

The men on deck are trying to chip off sea ice with a tiny ball pein hammer and a screwdriver, yet it turns out you had a load of ice axes on board for the climbers, they would have made a better job on that sea ice than the screwdriver!

OMG I've seen lots of terrifying sailing videos but this one takes the cake. The ice! Over everything. The cold. The waves. That there would be my idea of hell. Interesting and beautiful but my personal terror.

As someone who considers a sail from Anegada to Jost van Dyke in 4 meter following seas a harrowing journey, rewarded by a strenuous trek up the beach to Foxy’s for a much needed drink, I cannot relate to the desire to sail and then climb in the high latitudes in any way. But kudos to these guys wanting to do so, and doing it successfully.
