The Best 1950s Album Covers
I combed through 700+ albums from the 1950s to determine which were my favorite. So many small decisions can contribute to the overall feel of a cover; color temperature, font orientation, how people are posed, how they're lit. So many unique and interesting methods of using a 1x1 canvas to say to an audience, "hey, look! This person is a musician! Buy their work!"
Which covers are your favorite? Which did I miss?

This is that era from 1960 to 1963 where The world was stuck between the 50s Rock revolution which had died out in the mainstream especially after Elvis went to Germany and The British invasion from 63 that redefined Rock music. In between pop had made a huge Comeback in the charts and Elvis Totally embraced it with his song selection and his melted voice style at that time . He showed that unlike many rock artists from the 50s he was quick to adapt. As he said himself "If music changes i would be foolish not to change with it "

So many great tracks on this album. Hard to believe that 11 of the 12 tracks were recorded by Elvis in a single 12 hour session. My favorite is "I Slipped, I Stumbled, I Fell" followed by "I Want You Baby." Always fun to listen to and watch your reactions. Elvis himself hated the cover pictures on a lot of his albums. He basically said the same thing - that he was tired of looking the same age on all of them. He eventually put his foot down but it was much later.

Zakk if you want some good acting from El, see the underrated "Flaming Star". Not a lot of singing but he sings the title song and the manager made him put in a birthday song, he wanted NO music in the movie. But that's a excellent movie. It was a sensitive role for him as a half breed Indian, which most people know His great great Grandma on his mother's side was full Cherokee. Similar to me whose people come from NC and Tenn. Thanks for all the good music reviews. Be Blessed

It seems like your just picking every song apart, and giggling at them. These were only teenage boys at the time. If you had listened to the music that was out in America at that time (1962), this would have been considered hard rock. You don't have to like them, or only two or three of them, they made enough money off them. This album is still much better than anything out today! Like I've always said,,, "In The Universe Of Rock Music, The Beatles Were The Big Bang!"

Just to push back on facts. Elvis didn't have the most top 20 singles in history. Bing Crosby had 379 . No one comes close to that. In fact he sold more records than any other singer in history.. but somehow he's been completely forgotten. But hey your love for Elvis music is great . I was 7 when he died. I remember watching the news he died,I said to my oldest brother. Who's Elvis? ,he said oh he's just a dead old fat cunt 😮

You need to give their first few songs some credit. All these songs were written when John & Paul were only about 17 and 16 years old. Plus, they recorded the entire album in one day

Back in that place and time, it was a big deal to keep religious music and popular music separate. I'm sure Elvis felt genuinely sincere when saying his religious music had nothing to do with the music he was doing then. Of course he is not totally honest, because there is no way you can keep the music apart. But there is plenty of video showing Elvis singing religous songs. You can judge for yourself. But to me it really is a very different music and way of performing.

As others have written, this is not exactly surf music. As a surfer and guitarist from that era, real surf music is instrumental with driving guitars dripping with reverberation from a Fender amp. Think Dick Dale and The Deltones doing "Miserlou." Think the Chantays doing "Pipeline." Think The Pyramids doing "Penetration."

You really should do a bit of research before you review a record. This was their first LP record. There were a few songs written by Lennon-McCartney but it mostly consisted of songs from their stage act. It was recorded 62 years ago in 1963. Songs from that era didn't have much depth. I could go on for a looooooong time (because I'm an expert on the Beatles) but I'm also busy. Peace, man.

You may want to differentiate the originals from the covers (which the 5 first LPs has) Their covers are always made their own, but sometimes they don't quite catch the power of the original. On this album i recommend listening to the original "Chains" by The Cookies, even though you seemed to really enjoy the cover 😅
