On May 21st I traveled to Allentown to compete in my second ever BJJ tournament. I entered 3 brackets, 1 in the gi and 2 in no gi, and got to compete in 6 matches, winning a silver medal in the white belt - advanced (more than 6 months experience) 155lbs division. I had a great time and certainly learned a lot, which was my goal. This is my first time making a youtube video and making commentar...

I got caught with this once if someone’s going for inverted triangle, take your elbows pin them to your side there’s no more inverted triangle he hast to get up under your elbow, not the leg that goes over the head. That leg that goes around the body he hast to get under the elbow. Keep that pinned there’s no joke. I never ever got caught with it again.

Random comment here, as an ex judo student blue belt level when I was young. I find Brazilian jujitsu very different in thr distance of approach and defence on ground fighting. To me they are fighting in the danger zone. Meaning not far away enough or not close enough to make locks no longer effective. One day I plan to give it a go, but in judo it's all about leverage and those huge dynamic movements. I would be levering my opponents body to get in super close for a choke or arm bar. Looks interesting, but It looks wrong to start at that point of disadvantage.

Um...these white belts are getting trickier and trickier these days. Why just the other day I saw this guy with only three months on the mats smoke a competition purple belt with a helicopter arm bar. Actually, no i didn't. Guys with three months in have no clue about those kinds of moves.

"He's a white belt"=he's a dude whose trainer didn't promote him to blue belt yet. It can be arbitrary and many coaches intentionally delay promotion so that their teams can win in tournaments. Not saying that's necessarily what happened here but something to be aware of

What is the point of competing if you’re just following instructions from someone who knows 1000 times more than your competitor? What happens when the coach isn’t there? The whole point of martial arts is you against them, not you, and your coach, and your friends, and your family, and your Instagram butt buddies against them.

It depends on the ruleset, but regardless it isn't a very effective choke as it leaves you vulnerable to armbar. In this instance I think he was more posting on my neck as opposed to actually trying to choke me
