They are a dysfunctional family, but what I get from Ryan's explanation is that he was trying to step up as a parent and men struggle leading in that role for both gender positions. Tatum was bright and attention starved, no doubt because neither of her parents knew how to communicate where she would feel secure in life with either parent. So in her brilliance to "fend" for herself, she manipulated things, equivalent to child tantrums. The fault lies in both generations and until they all take ownership of their individual parts, the wounds will be open sores, as Ryan says. Tatum screwed up her own marriage and relationship with her own children, when Ryan wasn't even in the mix to muddle it up - that is on HER. Once adult, figure your life out to be happy, don't hang onto a past that doesn't serve you well. She is trying to make efforts, but still holds onto her darkness; let the light shine already!

Ryan was the root of all their problems. His children, ex-wives, and others. The only one who survived intact was Leigh-Taylor Young, his 2nd wife, who divorced him and took their son Patrick out of Hollywood. He's the classic narcissist who charmed and then mistreated everyone close to him. He was a terrible parent and husband. He said this himself later on.

I think Ryan O'Neal is a terrible father and person. To be best friends with Lee Majors for the years that they were friends, and then one day just practically steal Farrah right out from underneath Lee Majors what does that really tell you about Ryan O'Neals character and integrity. The truth is Ryan took Farrah away from Lee Majors and when they started their relationship Ryan didn't want the kids around. This is why Tatum and her brother Griffin had to raise themselves. I can understand Tatum's resentment towards Farrah at the time, but Ryan made those decisions. The hardest part for Tatum (I understand this as I feel the same way about my father), is wanting her father to accept responsibility for his actions and to get an apology from him. I had to realize I wasn't going to get it and to have some kind of acceptance. ...oh and wow Ryan blaming his kids for Farrah getting ill and ruining his relationship with her???!!! Really???!!!! And notice he doesn't even want to talk about his son Griffin. All his kids ended up with some major problems. His son with Farrah ended up in jail.

Yes a narcissist personality but it is hard to not feel his pain. I think Ryan does not really know how to relate. Sad that adult children cannot accept what is, and live a better life.
