Vale Gliders
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 5 มี.ค. 2007
It has been a while but my interest has returned to building and flying rc gliders around my local slopes.
Have the luxury of living in a valley and can walk to slopes suitable for all wind directions, some are closer than others but the range is from 4-10 mile round trip. so with that in mind want to pack small and travel light. Fed up with smashing my planes up dsing, my interests are now more towards acrobatic gliders, but still like speed!
Need to tidy the workshop and get busy building and flying, new content will drop very soon.

Flying an Expanded Polystyrene Rc Plane on my North Slopes
Head off to my North Slopes for a flying session with my Expanded Polystyrene scratch built RC Plane I called Bambino, as its fairly small.
I was part of a group developing airfoils for a designer years ago, and this was my test for this particular light lift foil. Others tried in on a plank and also conventional builds and it seemed to excel in all area`s. I wanted to remind myself how it performed as it is very similar to the foil used on the Ahi, at least to my eye, so think it would work very well in that role.

More thumb practice, but ohh that landing! Just avoided the tree, but it was a bit dodgy. Am I ready for a moldy yet?
My RC Glider Workbench and some Unboxing
มุมมอง 7157 หลายเดือนก่อน
Uncovering my RC Glider workbench, some Unboxing and a quick look at some projects that were started a while ago and need finishing off. Having put a lot of effort into clearing off the workbench, tidying up and setting up better camera and light systems, wanted to give it a test run before getting stuck into some projects. Some of these builds were being documented on RC Groups as a build blog...
Ahi RC Glider Slope Soaring on my Local Hill
มุมมอง 5K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Slope Soaring on my local hill with an Ahi RC Glider. It`s been 10 years or so but need the exercise so why not walk to my slopes? Thumbs are rusty, my legs are weak but managed to get there and back for my Hobbit adventure, even sat in a hole for a while to let the rain blow through. Just about to launch and saw another flyer setting up, he drove 1 1/2 hours to get there so guess others think ...

Pulling my first carbon moulded wing, few things to improve on but overall very happy with the result for my first attempt.
Solid core molded carbon wing part 1
มุมมอง 49311 ปีที่แล้ว
Laying up my first molded carbon wing, going solid core rather than hollow, as the process, strength and ease of repair appeals to me more. My inspiration comes from the Scratcho thread in the ds forum on rcgroups, so thanks to Andrew.

Comparing sharp sand to poravor as a mould backing material .....mainly
The ahi is a great looking model. It was a toss up but I have always wanted to try a DLG, so in the end I went with a libelle. I like you colour scheme, dayglow orange is a good idea, so easy to spot. Also, WOW, what a hill it ,ust be a popular site for slopers.....
Am sure you will have lots of fun with the Libelle. Ironically that slope is not a popular one, very limited parking and a long walk, but is the best slope in the area for the prevailing SW wind. Need to pull my finger out and film some of my other local slopes as they are all pretty good. Thanks for taking a look. 😄👍
Merci c'est magnifique !
Your welcome, and thanks for taking a look. 👍
Hi i would like to hane a go at making my own fuselage ,i have watched many videos .but still not sure the best materiai for the job .could you list the items you use it would help me emensly im going around in circles .many thanks , Chris
Phew, that`s some question Chris, could make a whole video series about that. Like most things in life, there are many ways to go about it and everyone has a personal view of which way is best. I am always open minded and have experimented a lot with materials. Use epoxy- polyester resin will warp over time and make the mold useless. Laminating resin is runny and easy to wet out the cloth, its called high viscosity so use that. Epoxy tooling coat- gives a thick layer for the base of the mold, put on a second coat when the first goes tacky , then lay some thin glass cloth it that as it tacks up. Something around 4oz/100gm. Next few layers I build up thickness with 6oz cloth-160gm twill weave is more flexible and lays down flatter. After that its about thickness and you need to build out to around 4 mm for the mold to be durable so thick cheap glass cloth, I found biaxial weave is cheap and thick , but get all the air out and consolidate it down well. Release- use 2 pack paint on your plug big fan of durabuild as it is designed specifically for that purpose, easy to sand and polish. At least 10 layers of wax and a thick layer of pva mold release. Works every time so now reluctant to change. Hope that helps, plan to make lots of video content around this stuff as there still seems to be interest in it.
Thank you very much I appreciate your help
Welcome back. I havent ds'd for years. Hope you're well.
Doing ok thanks Dave.👍
@@valegliders it's been a few years. I fly Alton Barnes quite a bit in a SE. May see you up there?
@@rumbey1 For sure, gradually getting back into it
inspiring 👍
Thanks 👍
Hi, I really enjoyed your video! I just bought my AHI last month and have not hade time to put it together yet. I am thankful you took time to make this video and make thqt long hike to show us.
Great to hear you enjoyed it. It`s a fun little glider and you will have a blast flying it. Appreciate you taking a look 👍
What a beautiful slope! I must give it a go one day!!
I am biased because I can walk to them. The southern ones used to be very popular with fliers though, before the jellyfish invasion. 😄
Nice. Looks like a blast to fly.
Thanks, it`s a fun little thing and easy to carry strapped onto the backpack.
Looks like a great slope. Thanks for the video
No problem, thanks for taking a look. 👍
Awesome wing nice build and a great spot to slope, very cool it curves to catch wind in many directions... 👍🏼
Thanks. A large bowl like this also accelerates the wind with a venturi effect, so windier than a straight slope of the same height would be. 😄👍
What a ridge - need to check that out 👍🏻
I may be biased, but think it`s a pretty good area for all wind directions. Hope to feature a few more local slopes in future vids. Thanks for taking a look👍
Very nice...but this kind of hilltop and weather is very notorious for lightning strikes
Thanks, will be careful👍
Very nice and glad you're back at building, would love to see your creations fly! ✌🏼😎👍🏼
Thanks, more emphasis on finishing and flying this time around. Still like starting things though.😂
I would love an all carbon bird. Very nice! Its been 11 years did you ever get to fly it?
Not yet, it`s still a project, needs ailerons cut out and gear installed. High on my to do list so hopefully get to fly it this year.😁👍
Hey there. This is from PCBWay. Glad you r back. Any chance we could be participating in your future RC projects?:D
It is possible, though I do have my own cnc foam cutting machine and a cnc router which I could bolt a laser onto. Hope to do lots of building as I get back into the hobby so you never know.
@@valegliders awesome to know! possible to leave us a livechat portal?:)
I think you are perhaps above Pewsey, I used to live in Wilcott, drank at the Barge and flew all over those ridges. Wonderful place for glider guiders.
Haha, its a small world. Have neglected my local slopes for the last 10 years and hardly saw anyone flying. It seems they have not been forgotten though, especially for the large scale gliders as there is some great landing areas. Thanks for the sub, my first for many years.👍
Thank you for the explanation
Nice video...what do DS mean?
Thanks. Dynamic Soaring: Flying on the back of the hill and accelerating the plane through the wind shear, like this.... th-cam.com/video/0nyYaL0dGAA/w-d-xo.html
Light?
New lights for the workshop, new vids coming
Consider camera location. Arm and hand block view sometimes
Thanks for your input, new camera gear and working on mounting systems to start again from scratch
'Up downloading a mega sized file' i love it....😂 and you videos thank you so much.
Great video mate.im down in salisbury doing the same sort of thing.
your trailing edge is labeled LE-- maybe you had the foam backwards and the wings were not supposed to be straight but rather swept back--thanks for the info though.
I cut my own wings and always put LE on the leading edge, bit like face side face edge for carpenters and joiners. That being said, I was just playing around with planforms, the LE is irrelevant in this context.
Thanks. Built a few windsurf boards in the past, that was by shapping the foam blank with ply stringers and laying up over it. With a mould you should be able to sell a few on the beach if it goes well I used to kitesurf on a flat piece of ply, so a composite board should go fantastic.
Built my own cnc foam cutter, you can see it working on one of my videos, and have been spending most of my time lately getting a cnc router up and running. Thanks for the comment, good to hear you are findingthe vid useful.
What CNC machine do you use? (great stuff btw)
Made my own.
This is great stuff, I am building a mould at the moment. I have really struggled to find good stuff that is relevant to what I am making, this is GREAT! (its a kite surf board btw)
Looking good Mark, The films are coming thick and fast today !
Are you still building and flying?
Yes, definitely Chris
The price of Sharp sand to Porover is another good reason to use it I would of though aswell as availability
Still have a tonne or two to use up, see no reason not to continue using it
Your welcome Chris, should give you a reference for your build to see how all the parts go together.
Thanks Mark
Keep them coming Mark
Very interesting
There are some videos on my site describing how to do wet tapered seams in the workshop section. Too long to post here unfortunately.
Great Vid How do you lay up the fuselage so that the two halves are joined
By using a wet seam layup. Made videos of that in the past but will re make them
fuck this video and you
Thanks for commenting and glad you have found them useful. I did several videos on joining parts a while ago, they are on my wesite on the wet seams page within the workshop section, with download links at the bottom of the page. A couple of them are to long for utube so have not made it on here. Hope they help you to make some parts
Thanks (belatedly) for this really useful set of videos - very clear and systematic. I've wanted to do this for a while - now I can. But!! - you stopped too short - tell us about how to join the two halves.
There was a series of 5 videos on making the mold, and a further 4 on wet seam lay ups. Also did a series on inflatable bladders
Don't worry, managed to decode the audio using the TH-cam CC tool
With better gear will re make these videos and gradually delete them
What's with the strange echo on the sound?
Did my best at the time now have better gear and will delete all my old stuff gradually
