      The 28 Ultron is awesome and optically better than the 35 1.4, but i love the tiny size of that 35 Nokton and it works great on both the M9 and M8 even with the 1.33x crop, so even though I love 28mm focal lengths id pick the 35.

    Iam in the midst of deciding what to buy as my 7d has given up on me. I havnt really used it much anyway in the last few years as it was too bulky and I just didnt do as much photography. Iam going to Nepal to hike in the Himalayas again and I want to take a camere with me. I would love some advise on what to do. Option A, switch over to milc namely an olympus pen p-e5 and probably go with a kit lense as I wont be able to afford more. Option B, buy a 5D Mark III and use my existing lens collection which is nothing spectacular but still more than what I would have with the pen. What do you guys think?

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto 14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I would go M43, the 5D is a heavy camera, and you wont be able to use any EF-s lenses you have for the 7D, only EF ones. For hiking, especially the Himalayas i would say less weight the better. Also if you found the 7D bulky the 5D isnt going to be any smaller either.

    • @leguanoo
      @leguanoo 13 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@rudermanphoto I appreciate the feedback Matthew thank you! Ill check my lenses as i have no idea if they are ef or ef-s. As for the weight its not a huge concern this is not my first time with heavy equipment in the mountains. If the 5D m.III will produce better quality images then I would rather go with that and just deal with the weight. If I can produce similar quality images with a small milc then I may opt for that. Price for a used 5d and pen e-p5 is similar. Both used of course.

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @ all lenses made for crop cameras are EF-S and sadly wont work on full frame Canon cameras, but you can use a full frame EF lens on a crop Canon. If weight isnt an issue then yes the 5D is not only going to give you amazing results but also be fully weather sealed and very robust. I’d recommend getting the 40 2.8 STM pancake to pair with it, it’s a tiny lens and very sharp, cheap and versatile.

    • @leguanoo
      @leguanoo 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@rudermanphoto Thanks man. I have a 50 mm ef 1.8 so thats a start. Ill have to check the rest of my lenses. But the 40 2.8 STM is affordable so may invest in one. Thanks!

      @ that 50 1.8 is amazing! Also, look into the 24-70 f4 IS L, you can find them for so cheap nowadays and it was the lens I basically had glued to the 5d3 during my time using it - light, weather sealed and awesome image quality/AF performance.

    2:00 I wouldn't have ranked that 1st, the entrant dropped the blues (sky) down too much, it doesn't look convincing (they're going for realism). The one below is unrealistic (high clarity and bumped up raw shadows) but at least it's intentional. the cheatah one just looks like they've dodged the mother in and auto-selected the sky / dropped the blue luminance too far. the moment however is great, i just have a gripe about these £10,000 lens wildlife photos winning all the awards. they all look the fucking same.

    • @WizardOfCheese
      @WizardOfCheese วันที่ผ่านมา

      6:25 its not that you have more latitude in BW its that colours clip out of gammut (just as blacks/whites clip) if you push them too far. you often see people back off on the saturation if they're bumping up the contrast. but it all comes down to "get it right in camera" get your contrast from light, wardrobe, set / backgrounds, etc. this one works so well because of her hair, skin complexation, makeup, black tanktop, black tattoo, iris limbus, etc.

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah I agree, there were other shots in that list that deserved to be first - I love the giraffes and that horse photo more then the cheetah shot, but the cheetah is a really cool subject, so I can see the reasoning behind it winning the award, even if I personally wouldn’t have picked it as first place.

    I had the M8 at release: it bricked the second day. Thus began the love/hate. People coming to it now should also be aware that besides the IR issue, if you want to use ultra wide lenses like the voigtlander 12 or 15 which are amazing lenses, you will get some weird color shifts around the edges that can be hard to correct. Also, very often the sensor gets dead pixels that create a dead pixel column vertically - only Leica can fix this by remapping the sensor so that's a good couple month holiday for your camera in Germany. If buying used I'd advise seeing raw sample images in dark environments at high ISO to make it obvious but it can affect all ISO's and is noticeable in clear sky pictures. And the third issue I'd raise is that the IR issue is very bad when it comes to skin tones under tungsten indoor lighting. People go blotchy magenta. It exaggerates any skin imperfection. So other than that.....continue loving/hating the M8:)

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      All great points! Yes my M8 has a subtle line of dead pixels, but it only seems to show up at higher ISO’s and it’s at the very left of the sensor so i dont really ever notice it.

    I had the M8 for seven years (bought it new) and I took a lot of valuable photos with it because it was the camera I had at that time. Did I love it? Not so much. Getting the coulours right (with IR cut filter) was difficult, everything over ISO 640 was a mess. When I could afford a used M9 I went for it. Not the big step I hoped for. ISO still bad. Sold it fast and got the M240. This was the right move. Kept it for many years and loved it. When I look back at the files I can't see the "CCD magic".

      Yeah the M9 isnt a drastic improvement over the M8, certainly not as drastic as I hoped, and I think the M240 for similar money is a much smarter buy.

    Do a blind test between a CCD and a CMOS sensors of roughly the same age and MP and you won't be able to tell the difference

    Please just have a static white/ black or medium grey background when displaying the example photos :( it hurts the bitrate and is really distracting too! Other than that, class stuff, subbed!

    Always buying a Leica is a question of narcissism, when i started in photography i always wanted one. and when i finally reach the money after selling some things. i bought a M10 with a 50 f2. i ended up selling it for a X100 and because it cost a fraction of the price, works better, has better service they don't charge you 1000usd for a simple cleanup maintenance.

      @rudermanphoto 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      With Leica you either get it or you dont, I dont think they’re the perfect cameras for everyone - but I’m glad they exist and they are a unique shooting experience, the X100 is just another Fuji. Also I find it interesting you got charged $1000 for a simple clean? Leica offer two free sensor cleans per year to any M bodies, regardless of if you’re the original owner or not, and I’ve had my M8 cleaned by Leica Melbourne and it didnt cost me anything. But yeah if something else breaks boy it wont be cheap haha

      I just think f4 on a crop sensor is a bit too ambitious, unless you never do any low light stuff.

    Hello and thank you for this very informative video. I do have a crush on the CCD sensor which got me clicking on your video. That said, I really love the look and feel of both those leica cameras...but....I didn't know that the D200 (which I have owned until it went terribly wrong with major electronic issues) had a CCD sensor. Furthermore, it seems (as you've rightly pointed out) that the software tweeks on that Nikon sensor are less tuned towards mangenta which is very much nicer IMHO. Coming up end of spring is a major roadtrip with my daughter: I was thinking of bringing my M4+35MM Summicron but film prices have me re-thinking this choice for now and maybe going back (?) to digital with a "cheap" option would be the way to go? What are your thoughts on durability of the Nikon D200??? Thank you again for this great video

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you! Ive only had the D200 for under 2 weeks so I cannot comment on long term durability, but like i said in the video I did accidentally drop it onto solid concrete and the camera works just fine, i have my doubts I could say the same about either Leica if i did that. It’s a super solid camera and I think itll last you a long time, and honestly if it doesn’t they’re so cheap you could probably buy 10 of them for the price of that M4 and 35 cron lol The only thing I will say regarding the D200 and it’s something you’ll likely encounter if you end up buying one is that the grip has started to go sticky due to rubber reversal, and finding OEM replacement rubber grips is near impossible, so you may have to just deal with it. I read that wiping the rubber with isopropyl alcohol would help de-sticky it but I tried and didnt really notice a huge difference. Another camera to look into is the D700, many in the comments have expressed just how good it is, with colours apparently even better then the D200 despite not being CCD, and they arent much more then the D200 with the added benefit of being full frame. I hope to pick one up soon and do a comparison!

    Cool video, thanks for the M8 vs M9 comparison! I would have however used the same lens with an adapter on the Nikon to really have a more objective comparison. The Voigtlander does have a propensity to modify the color balance slightly. Also, I think you'd agree it makes no real sense to go for rangefinders if one's only desire is to have a CCD, the user experience of these two Leicas is what kind of also makes their price.

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Agreed, a lens does affect colours ever so slightly - but I don’t own a M to F adapter, nor do I particularly need one, this video was just going to be M8 vs M9 till i got the D200 and noticed the similarity with the colours haha. I also wanted to demonstrate what a super cheap setup, lens and body together costing less then half what I paid for the voigtlander lens alone was capable of too. But as for the second point, I think they go hand in hand - the rangefinder experience is a huge reason why the M bodies are appealing and I think justify their price point as its wholly unique, but the fact the M9 sells for more then the M240 shows that people do want CCD and Rangefinder together.

    I bought an M8 to try the sensor and absolutely hated the shitty little rangefinder rectangle that is totally crap to use in low light and smooth surfaces. Images weren't great either but that's probably my own fault as I wasn't a fan from the get go....I've become a Fuji fan boy now and love my GFX. If I want to degrade an image to look like something from a bygone era it's fairly easy to do in Photoshop. But hey, each to his own....

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Having shot hundreds of rolls of film through my M2 since 2016 and having plenty of experience with rangefinders I find them one of the quickest ways to manually focus - although it is tricky in low light and especially if you dont have any sharp objects to lock onto, but with time you do get actually really quick with it. Time and a place for everything! Hard to compare a GFX with the M8, it’s bigger in every way, sensor size and physical size! Both are good cameras, but just like I wouldnt use a M8 for pro studio work I probably would hate lugging a GFX out when im having a chill day with some friends :)

    • @MikeKleinsteuber
      @MikeKleinsteuber 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@rudermanphoto Yeah, as I said, different strokes for different folks. I have old eyes and prefer auto focus and I'm willing to put up with the extra heft you have using the GFX, especially with a lens like the Canon 85mm f1.2. For me, sensor size is paramount...Have fun...

    Rangefinders for the win, for me. No other camera can equal the M8’s ability to shoot not only unique color and superb B&W, but handheld infrared. It’s a blast.
