Vermithor was the dragon that Daemon singed to back in S1. The guards were holding them back because if they let them leave, they will tell the Greens what's happening. They can't do the selection one at a time either because it's basically death or not when it comes to choosing a dragon.

Personally, I do feel the storyline gets a bit slow at times BUT keep in mind, there IS a reason this is currently rated as one of the top anime.

The other thing to consider about anime is the animation style. There are definitely some where the drawing and animation style is more light hearted and can seem to target a younger audience, but there are other styles where the story tend to follow under a heavier or darker theme/genre that adults can also enjoy. There's just so much variety that it's hard to shove it all under "cartoon = for kids".
