    Thanks John great work you have obviously done quite a few hydro- matics. I am assembling one from my 1953 Lincoln and can not get any end play on the imput shaft. Did you say that is normal?

    Great work John. A couple of questions, you do add a ball bearing to the clutch springs, do they have an specific diameter? Does the spring you change come from which transmission model? Thanks

    Hi John, My name is Brad and a fellow transmission rebuilder. I'm working on a 1954 olds Hydramatic a few questions. The car was brought to me after being restored and the transmission did not work. The gentlemen that rebuilt the transmission had past away so that's how I ended up with it. The car will bind up in reverse. The first thing we did was check the band adjustment. I don't know if we were told right but we snugged the adjuster and then turned it in another 2 turns. Is this right? This did not fix the problem. There is also a pipe that keeps blowing out. The one to the rear pump. It is also missing the small spring for the rear band and the retainer in the torque converter drain back. Could they be my problem? I appreciate any advice you have on this. Please check out my TH-cam channel, Brad's Transmissions. you might like them. Thanks Brad Wilde

    WOW!!! I am amazed at the engineering that went into the design of this transmission considering that it was designed in the 1930s!!! What they built was a mechanical analog computer powered by hydraulics!

    Awesome ! So technically I can use this video tutor to rebuild mine and everything will be exactly the Same? You should know if its off in anyway I'll be lost. This will be my first attempt to rebuild a transmission of any nature. As long as it's exactly like your excellent video I think I can do it except I don't have a few tools I noticed you used. Also knowing I plan to change everything possible in it can you recommend the best full kit supplier that I can order a complete kit from?

    I would imagine this doesn't differ much from the Hydramatic on my father's '53 Pontiac Chieftain.

  • @8avexp
    @8avexp 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    My father's '53 Chieftain had a transmission leak. The front seal was bad. He told me it had to be replaced twice, but after that, it didn't leak anymore.

    Hi. GM Powerglide and Hydra-Matic are the same things?? Or not? Explane please. Thanks

    • @tunnelportterror
      @tunnelportterror 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      no, they are not the same. Hydramatic was the early GM automatic trans first built late 1930's...used during WWII in 2 tanks...then again put in cars after WWII in Olds, Cadillac, then also Pontiac. Buick had its own trans called a Dynaflow. Chevy had its own trans called a Powerglide. The Chevy and Buick transmissions were 2 speeds. The Hydramatic was a 4 speed. In 1956, they changed the Hydramatic to a "Controlled Coupling" design, where it had a 2nd fluid coupling. Then they changed it again around 1960 to a cheaper, lighter "Roto-Hydramatic". Both of these were used until 1964 in Cadillac, Pontiac, Olds- then replaced across the board in all GM car lines with the TH300 and TH400, then shortly afterwards the TH300 was replaced by the TH350. The TH350/400 transmissions soldiered on with true torque converters in them well in the 1980's. They are the premier GM racing transmissions and street transmissions, they are lighter and you can put them in with a floor jack in your driveway with the car on the ramps from underneath- or attach them to the engine and dump it all in one piece from the top with the hood off. The older Hydramatic weighed a LOT, come of the heavy duty truck units were almost as heavy as the engine- as much as 435 lbs. or more. But those old Hydramatics were beefy as hell and actually more durable and more efficient. They got a 1:1 final lockup without a torque converter clutch. For pure torque handling durability, an old Hydramatic set up to shift manually would be really cool. What a friggin' boiler of a transmission !! They are cool machines. I have a pile of them, last count 5 of them. typically if you buy a core from an old junkyard, they leave that transmission on it, cuz if the engine is locked up from sitting, they can't turn the motor to remove all the flywheel.flexplate bolts, to remove it from the engine-so they just leave it on there.

    • @tunnelportterror
      @tunnelportterror 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ps- keep in mind the 1930's to 1964 "Hydramatic" in the older design, and not to be confused with the 1965-up "Turbo Hydramatic". completely different units just sharing one common name or suffix.
