Don't Use Threadlockers with Plastics
มุมมอง 1.2K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video is all about common threadlockers and plastics interacting. This interaction can have disastrous consequences for projects and materials, and I learned about it earlier this year when I destroyed a set of LightLeaf Solar Panels by using Loctite during the install. Not all plastics are reactive and not all threadlockers are made the same! Research and test your own materials! I've tri...
I Destroyed The Best Solar Panels: Not The LightLeaf Follow Up I Expected
มุมมอง 3.3K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
I knew I'd eventually post an update about my LightLeaf Solar Panels, but I didn't think it would be this soon, or that things would take the path they have. I learned a lesson I couldn't believe I never heard of earlier: loctite and polycarbonate DO NOT MIX. Part science experiment, and part Q&A, this video covers the remounting of my LightLeaf Solar Panels on my Mercedes Sprinter Van. After t...

DIY Water Heater: The Design Process
มุมมอง 1.7K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video is a crude addendum to the first water heater video I put out. Please watch that video for context: th-cam.com/video/3-MYiSBSnmE/w-d-xo.html This video is less refined as I just show how the heater came together as well as some water flow tests. From the first PVC version all the way to installation in my camper van, I tried to pick out the important moments from the footage. If you ...
Make Your Own WATER HEATER For Your Camper Van
มุมมอง 55K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
A water heater is an amenity I never wanted in my van due to how complicated and inefficient all the regular options are. So I finally got around to building my own DIY water heater for our camper van conversion. The main goals of the design were to have it function with a water pump, not lose storage space, and be able to power it off my regular fuse panel. If you found this entertaining, educ...
Dummy-Proof Method to Cut Long Consistent Curves
มุมมอง 1.2K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a short little tutorial on how I like to make long curve pieces with zero guess work when building furniture or doing woodworking projects. Minimal clean up and by only relying on pattern bits with the router there is almost no chance of messing things up (unlike a jig saw or bandsaw where a lapse in focus can result in a painful touch up process). I use 1/4" thick plywood scraps but de...
Installing LightLeaf Solar Panels on my Sprinter Van Conversion
มุมมอง 15K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video covers my installation of four LightLeaf 140W gLeaf solar panels on my Mercedes Sprinter camper van. My old array was built out of three 200W rigid panels, and by swapping out for the LightLeaf panels I saved over 40 lbs of weight! If you'd like to learn all about their products visit www.lightleafsolar.com If you are using thread locker on any of the fasteners to secure the panels m...

But but do you Climb? :)
What do you mean "big heavy head"?? He is smol and precious.
Feels like my van build is made of lead now 😮
More expensive, but stronger and lighter for a given dimension, is Coosa board. I haven’t built with it myself but it is used extensively in the boat building industry. Another option, if one has the tools, is 1/16” (approx) aluminum with the same dimensional properties as the plywood and no susceptibility to moisture like wood. All that said, this man’s cabinets are fantastic!
Very helpful, thanks.
You are an incredibly skilled craftsman and I love your 8020 rant! Your work is beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
This is good work, thank you. But your own numbers show that S/B is cooler at the thermocouple than S/S. I feel like you are just ignoring that data to tell us that S/S is best. Your logic is good, but the measurements appear to disagree? Maybe an inside facing isn't as bad as one might expect? It certainly seems like further investigation might be needed.
Hey Have you ever tinkered with these foam boards for vertical structures? with a strong fabric glued to both sides they become REALLY strong, and the R-value in ALL your cabinets sounds appealing for a VERY light weight material. Perhaps check this (rambling) dude out: th-cam.com/video/38DMX7s9-X8/w-d-xo.html
Reminds me of Kramer's coffee table book
Exactly why I’m building a box van,no curves and weight isn’t going to make much difference in fuel economy!
I'm surprised you're not using higher quality PEX components for plumbing
Dont know why you dont have 100k subs! So happy i stumbled on your channel
I have several issues with "reflective insulated" covers on the inside of a window. 1. You are heating that plastic which transfers some portion of that heat into the interior. 2. heat is not good for plastic, nor is UV. 3. You're blocking all the natural light, which for some of us might be the point, but for most people - well, that's why they paid extra for windows. Ideally you want to stop the infrared and UV from hitting the window. Awnings have the advantage of reducing the heat load on the entire side of the structure. If you don't have awnings, you might consider attaching the reflective curtain to the outside, ideally with an airgap.
Everyone knows that black absorbs heat. The reason for the black fabric covering is stealth and to cope with condensation water. Can you find a solution to these?
You are fundamentally confused in applying the wrong (comparative) model to your vehicle weight. A commerical vehicle, especially a load-carrying van design, is not comparable to a human body trying to achieve athletic success. That is a stupid comparison. A human frame can but isn't designed by evolution or breeding to be load carrying. It can but that wasn't the design ethos (walking upright etc was). Thereafore excess weight is always undesirable. This is not the same at all for commerical vehicles! If you want athletic excellence in a vehicle then go get a sports car or, a muscle car. A van is akin to a carthorse not a race horse. It isn't designed to be empty only moving air when optimally used. A van is specifically deigned to be load carrying. For sure if it never bears a load, a van and its components will last longer! But that's a dead-end illogical argument because then why own a van. A van is designed to be used under load. If you can't take the costs of that then don't get one. Period. Your obvious and misplaced concern reminds of the reason that annorexia is considered a mental health problem. You simply have the wrong theoretical approach to the issues.
Wheel base length is it 136 ?
So glad I've found you. I'm outfitting my Ram Promaster, I really like your simplistic way of setting up things. Great job, thank you.
Where did you buy that insulation roll?
your ADHD, common issue for all of us that are lol
Great video and I'm sure you make very light cabinets and that they would come out lighter regardless put two things one I think you've over-engineered the 8020 cabinets and that makes them excessively overweight and two you have one of the most agreeable comment sections I've ever seen on any video ever
This is brilliant information and guidance, but beyond the capabilities and experience of a DIY-er. I am examining my inclination to use 80/20 now, even if I can’t build to this ideal.
Thanks for making this video.
Love your attitude and your channel. Hope you find the success you seek but also hope that that measure can also just be growing, meeting new people and having the satisfaction that you added some valuable knowledge to these interwebs of ours
Awesome, I tend to overbuild and as I get better and more precise, I only use mm measurements and build to exact. I would like to use your method for my van conversion. I appreciate your skill. Well done.
Great vid mate. I made all my cabinets and drawers out of .9 and 1.2 aluminium sheet. Folded the cabinet and drawer slide supports used countersunk rivets then covered the unit with coloured wrap to match the van interior. The finished cabinet with no items inside and no bench top weighed under 3.2 kgs.
Looking forward to seeing you reorganize your shop. It’s kinda my thing. Benjamin Franklin said “A place for everything and everything in its place”😊
CAFE BUSTELO !!!!
You should do a video on how you tune your table saw.
Yes this is how custom is done. It's not easy.
I was wondering how you handled the venting the tank. With the gravity fill do you just wait for it to come back out the fill port to know it's full.
You can go to habitat for humanity and buy commercial doors for $75 each and desalination them already stained and sealed.
Love your work. Have you ever considered using aircraft-graded plywood? I think that one could get away by building van furniture with a 3.5-4mm ply. Also anyone with experience in building furniture with fiberglass sandwiched honeycomb material? Would love your input on this
I'm guessing you use a router to make your box joints for your drawers. What width are the fingers of the box joints? Do you have a video of your drawer making process? You cabinets are awesome.
Would be great to hear about your AC-12v? What’s it draw, review…thank you! Nice cabinetry !
yes brother, i feel you
Awesome thank you.
My takeaway is that you need two sets of covers, one for winter with a high R-value and another for summer, to reflect the energy away from the window. I live in New Mexico and would never use black to cover my windows. That would seem to create a heat pump effect, drawing heat into the covered window. I could use the dark covers from November to March to stay warmer. A kid at my daughter's elementary school did a study similar to this as a science fair project. Science!
These imperial units drive me crazy😅
Like# 697
Real world experience proves that window covers keep the interior of a van much cooler than would be without them.
It's your shop you can do whatever you want with it.
nice tip on the sink! I also did that on the bottom of my fridge to dampen the compressor noise!
That's a good idea, thanks!
@@projectofscience I don't think this will work, but I'm gonna try adding it to my hitch, tongue and see if it can help with the clunking any... That noise isn't so much from a resonation, but it might help a little?
what would you recommend for a bed platform?
Buy once cry once. Yes Fluke costs more but I've never regretted buying their products. I bought the Fluke 117mm and Master Accessory set (TLK-225) Years ago. Could not be more pleased. 😊
Cyanoacrylate glue is much stronger and faster than wood glue when used with a curing accelerant. Its much more expensive, but the time you save is incredible. No clamping! I started usung it on molding corner miters and cant believe how strong it is. I bet if you used it on the drawers instead of the time consuming finger joints, you could build up the cabinets much faster. I'd reinforce the inside corners with epoxy dookie schmutz and they'd never come apart.
I switched to the Fluke silicone based leads ages ago. I won’t use any others.
You want reflectix on both sides with thinsulate in the middle. This will provide the best insulation for radiant AND conductive heat. Good for summer (block heat from outside) and winter (keep heat inside).
They should be made reversible, one side white or silver, the other side black. Put the black side facing out in the winter, or when stealth is needed, and the rest of the time, use the reflective side.
Yurt companies do the same thing.
You're kind of forgetting the experience you would need with this type of wood work.
