Pruning grape vines in Minnesota
มุมมอง 19K14 ปีที่แล้ว
University of Minnesota Extension Educator Tom Vanderlinden shows you how to prune grape vines for wine making.
I'm in zone 4b Ontario growing Marquette and just finished year 4 with great growth but no real training yet (Ignorance) but I have had spring bud kill so a lesson learnt. Now my question is "Can I train two trunks and bring them up and tie them to a wire and produce cordons or do I need to head them off for fruiting purposes? Thanks
Jack, the choice is really yours. There are a variety of trellis options. Two trunks might be good if you have winter damage regularly, and one trunk is injured. However, one trunk will work also. You might look around for others growing Marquette near you and then compare notes
@@mnsmallfarm Thanks kindly, Most people around here are amazed that grapes even survive but I am trying hard, I am from Niagara and the zone is like 6b so this is a challenge. I have 5 vines growing and I will try a couple different methods. We usually have very good snow cover 3' so I thought lower into the snow zone would help and spring frost protection my greatest concern. So it is not necessary to use arms to have fruiting canes? NAMASTE
Some vines produce fruit on one-year-old canes, only. So "arms" are necessary. Rewatch the video a few times to get comfortable with the growth pattern. If you are zone 6, you should not have too many problems from cold weather killing Marquette vines. Vine die back could be a result of other issues.
Hello
A+ for pedagogical skill!
Mine go over my hobbit house. Huge. The last couple years. The grapes and the leaves have started to dry up the last couple years. When can I treat them and with and can I cut them way back right now?
Best time to prune is late winter or early spring. without pruning, the vines get overgrown and that leads to disease problems.
@@mnsmallfarm I usually prune them in February. They are so overgrown this year. Can I prune some now and some in February. What do I spray on them before they bud so they don't get bugs.?
@@colleenwesterberg6980 yes you can prune now and later. Bugs are too big a topic to get into. Suggest u find some books on basic grapegrowing, or take some samples into your nearest University , Extension office. (Usually under county government website)
thank You, Your video is muchly appreciated
This is a two-wire trellis, with a wire running along the top of the trellis poles and another running halfway up. You can train a vine to either one. The choice is yours, and depends on a few factors, including the type of vine you are growing. You can grow your cordon on the top wire, and let the vines hang down, or train your cordon to the lower wire and tie the vines up to the top wire.
At 3:44, do you have another wire of your trellis running above the one the cordon is growing on? If so, is that there to support the canes? Thanks. I learned a lot from your video.
Make some more vids please. They are helpful!
@bullittkid Cordons may last for years. If one dies or is damaged, you simply train a new one from a healthy shoot.
