I'm 32 but have no idea where my life is heading
Hi Internet friends : ) 👋
Here is some life updates and my thoughts on feeling lost in my 30s. I have never expected my early 30s to be a stage where I reflect on the past 30 years of my life then decided to tear down everything and rebuilt a new life narrative. Starting over is not comfortable and is challenging and I still have nothing figured out yet. But, I truly appreciate this journey being as an opportunity for me to touch down on the deepest questions in life ❓ - what do I actually want? What am I living for? How do I measure my life?
I hope you are enjoying your journey and knows that you are not alone on this starting over adventure. 😏

Yes, and changes are what makes life complicated and beautiful!
I did my PhD, in biophysics, 6.5 years and postdoctoral fellowships in brain MRI and cardiovascular MRI 6 years. I do not regret it more than 10 years later. But immediately after my PhD I felt regret. So give it some time and you will be glad you did it. I can spot fraud instantly like Elon Musk or SBF.
You suffered from the sunken cost fallacies.
Hi @FailingThirty, will you be open to granting a brief interview on this subject?
would love to! You can send more details about the interview to failingthirty30@gmail.com
if you want a stress free life appreciate every little things you have and never compare yourself to others, every human being is suffering but in different situations, remember you don't need to be rich in this world, luxury lifestyle can destroy human life, yes we need money to live but we don't live for money. As long as you have food for that day, you have security and you have a good health you are the bless people living in this earth. I highly recommend this book, title : don't be sad author Dr aid Alqarni I have soft copy if you need it just tell me. You never ever become happy if you are not truthful to yourself. Become truthful to ourself is important.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Gratitude is keys to a content and fulfilling life.
I agree that for most cases a PhD is not needed if you want to pursue a career in industry, but there are specific positions in which it's very hard to compete with other candidates without a PhD. The most obvious example is the quant position at hedge funds, banks,... - if you want to land a position in a leading firm, you cannot fight without a PhD against big brains with PhD at least.
I agree. Same as the biotech/pharma industry. It's rarely to see C-level posistions without a PhD.
as a few have said, this is very much a growing feeling. In my case I was in a role I would have liked to move on from when he market is better but a layoff brought it prematurely. Now its hard to see which career path to take.
I'm also in the process of quitting my career job; I feel such little sense of purpose at the current place I am in my life, I think once I realised I'm not someone that's career driven and I've just spend my whole life trying to reach said career it's really easy to start feeling like this! It's so it's so inspiring and reassuring to hear other people feel similar and I really love your approach and thinking towards it! You're doing great, can't wait for more videos :)
Aw, thank you! Feeling lost is uncomfortable, but I'm grateful for it since I was 'the good kid' for the first 30 years of my life-studying hard, getting good grades, and having a career that was respected by others, but never thinking about what I actually wanted out of life. Now, I finally have the courage to ask the hard questions-what am I living for? & what do I acutally want? I highly recommend The Pathless Path by Paul Millerd; it's such an incredibly impactful book!
we are in the same boat, keep it up!
just keep swimming! 😁
You are not alone <3
aw, thank you!
Don’t worry. You’re young and very smart. You’re ahead of the curve.
I’m 31 and wondering at what point are we no longer considered young, at what point are these feelings no longer valid? I felt like the second I turned 30 the grace period ended. If you’re 30+ you “know better” - what’s the age? 40? 50?
aw, thank you so much!
@@kindachill That's a good question-thanks for bringing it up. I'm still in my early 30s, so I can't speak for the older age group, but I feel that not knowing may just be a norm in life. As humans, we tend to avoid uncertainty and the unknown. At every stage of life, there are different challenges. I don't think I've ever felt ready to tackle any of the challenges in my life, but there's one big difference between me now and in my 20s: I may not know the solutions to the problems I'm facing, but I have way more confidence in myself that I can figure it out, and I know I'll be okay.
I mean, you are in the US and you must have a lot of skills. If you could get a phd you can for sure be productive somewhere else. You look 24 btw.
aw, thanks!
You are not alone in your feelings. I also feel very lost especially in my career. Life feels very uncertain and unpredictable and I'm still learning to sit in that - to learn to sit with the feeling of being 'lost'. Ultimately, being lost is good because it means that you have time to figure out your path.
I love what you said! Thanks! I feel the same on this 'lost' journey-it's difficult, but I’ve never felt this close to myself before.
My view of life is like this. Life is just a play. So why we are too serious about it? No one knows what will happen tomorrow. We might not be here at all. So just enjoy the moment, and whereever it leads us to will be the “right” answer. Of course sometimes I will be distracted and get overwhelmed again, but it is good to always comeback to this mindset. Hope this helps😊
I love that! That is a very simple but powerful mindset. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts!
Rebuilding a new life narrative is such a bold decision which definitely requires sheer grit and determination. Kudos to your courage 👏 Even I'm feeling lost right now and sometimes I really feel overwhelmed and anxious. I'm pretty confident that I'm having knowledge in my field but I'm unable to implement it in the right direction. Still trying to figure out how will I be able to accomplish my goals.
Thanks! I can relate to what you said very well. I feel anxious and often overwhelmed by the unknown and uncertainty about the future as well. I remind myself to focus on the moment and accomplish a little bit, day by day. I believe we both will create new systems and new narrative that fit our values. Cheers!
@@FailingThirty Thanks a ton for motivating me 😇 Really means a lot 😊
It's a simple choice. If making lots of money is the goal, a PhD is not the answer. Alternatively, if you want to go as far as you can in mastering a narrow topic, then it is the answer.
I have 3 degrees, 6 figure debt, and no career prospects. I can't find any work in my field, and when i do, im outcompeted by someone with experience. I was told growing up that going to uni will secure you a job and i feel lied to. I just want to end it all now and after my ageing parents pass away, I plan to.
Hey, thanks for sharing your story. i can relate that degrees are not a guarantee ticket to a better career. I highly recommend you a book called <The Pathless Path> by Paul Millerd. I also made a video about this book. I hope the book will provide you some insight with other options in life. If you want to reach out to me privately, you can find my email in the channel about section.
My husband is a PhD in economics and makes $225/hour crunching numbers or $450/hour doing depositions and court testimony as an expert witness. If he works an hour a day that's plenty of money for us with a family of 4. All three houses in 2 countries are paid off, plenty of money in retirement, his airplane is parked out front, his boat is docked 10 minutes away, we have no debts and both sons were admitted to college at age 13 on scholarships.
Do not waster your money and time to get Ph.D. degree.
Ph.D. is not worth in business world. Theory is not used in business and economic world.
I recently just decided to graduate with my Masters instead of finishing the Ph.D. It was hard decision to make, but I am betting that I will find a job and work my way up to a great career. The first jobs will probably suck but since they’re my first ones that’s ok. In all cases I will make making double than what I was making as a grad student
This is such a healing video, nice one! :)
Thanks, Ved!
I am only halfway through my 20s and I have already seen so much and met so many people, I have no doubt I will learn much more about myself by the time Im 30. Thank you for this video, congratulations on your journey to discovering yourself, keep going, keep fighting.

Don’t close the book on science either. If you can survive PhD, there has got something that can drive you that’s related to what you learned. -Someone entirely unqualified lol
It does kind of boil down to comparison for me personally which they say is the thief of joy. I got my Masters in finance and couldn't find myself to get into any successful career overall and am now nearing 30 in a few months with nothing really to say for the years of schooling I did overall. I'm not doing horribly in the grand scheme, but due to me comparing my position to those I grew up with, the friends I made over time, or people just in general that aren't me it sort of makes one feel bad that they aren't at a further place than they are. It's disheartening and sucks especially if you want to keep up with people as you'll inevitably see them and talk about their position in life which may hurt oneself. The inability to just not care sucks so much and lacking a partner that would reassure you or be a better half to look up to as well does suck quite a lot honestly. Life honestly is not doing so well now especially with everything becoming more competitive, more corporatized, and expensive as a whole with many countries economies going to the stinker. Either way, even if you're starting from the bottom again, it is quite admirable to see you taking it in stride. There was a point I was going to get at, but alas it became a trauma dump overall with me losing focus of my thoughts, but I am rather curious to see how you develop on this channel. Hope to see it grow.
Thanks for sharing your story. It’s okay not to have everything figured out in your thirties. I’m in my fifties, and I am now just getting the confidence to pursue what my heart really desires. It’s okay to reinvent as the decades change. Great partners love us for who we are, not our status in the world. Evidently, your partner values the excellent quality in you and feels she can’t live without them. At the end of the day, none of us are going to get out of this thing called life alive. Therefore, we need to enjoy the experience as best as we can in any given moment.
Yeah, we have to bring meaning to our meaningless lives by finding something that is fulfilling and ideally helps society.
"At the end of the day, none of us are going to get out of this thing called life alive. Therefore, we need to enjoy the experience as best as we can in any given moment." - I love this so much! thank you for reminding me to live at the moment and to embrace all experience!
when you talked about a friend asking you to describe your channel with one word, a thought came to my mind about the name of your channel and I think 'failing' has a negative connotation. It's not too late to rename your channel to 'succeeding thirthy' ;)

I am now 72 years old, and I am the father of 4 kids. The oldest is 42 and the youngest is 25. My two youngest are gay, and they are happy and fine. Let me tell you my story... When I was 16 my cousin came to stay with us during a summer. She was 17 and we got along real well. My brother was away at camp where he worked so she stayed in his bedroom next to mine. I was talking to her one night through the doorway, and my father heard us from another room. Of course, he didn't know I was not in her room. He said, "Tim, get out of Lori's room." I was shocked and just sat down in my chair. Next thing that happened was he came in and took my cousin away to sleep with my mother. That night set me off on a tangent. Eventually, I tried very hard to prove to my father that I was better than he thought I was. Although I never told him that I was not in Lori's room, I did eventually pickup photography, which was his passion. I began to work at being the best in that art form. I studied and got my degree in music but went to work with my father as he had started his own photography business. I worked for him for 10 years and eventually left to start my own business. My two brothers and I started a software business in 1984 called Photographic Software. I designed a software that balanced color negatives made from color slides. It was a very complicated thing to do, and Kodak's method did not work. When we started selling the software, Kodak invited us to Rochester because they wanted to know how we did it. I finally retired in 2014 and built a black and white lab, just for myself to work in, and I began to work only in black and white, making black and white negatives from color slides as well as shooting original black and white films and printing them. The main thing I did when I retired was, I began posting videos on how to work with a camera and in the darkroom (wet) with the method I had learned on my own. Here is a link to a video... th-cam.com/video/76SdcpUYYUk/w-d-xo.html About 2 months ago I took my two sons out for dinner and told them this story,. My oldest son (40 years old) had not heard this story before. After I finished he said, "So, you spent your life going into photography in order to prove something to your father?" And I replied, "Yea, otherwise I would have been a music teacher." He said, "That's fucked up." But you know what? It's all okay. My relationship with my father, in the end, was fine. I did my best in my chosen field and was able to share it with film photographers all around the world. I did not get a huge following; I think I have about 2,000 subscribers. But nevertheless, I don't feel like my life was wasted. Now, I get to teach guitar in my daughter's middle school. She's the chorus teacher there, so I get to use my music skills to share with 14 year old kids... finally. You are obviously talented and hardworking in your own way. If you can accomplish so much while studying something you didn't really like, imagine what you can do now that you are finding yourself and what you do like (yourself). Best wishes.
Had similar track, wanted to be a mechanical engineer, worked at the University for many years. At age of 35 switched career into software engineering. Take care, all will be good, one just need to work consistently in a chosen direction.
thank you!
Phd and university do not teach you science. They teach you to obey authority. Any breakthrough or scientific discovery needs to align to the establishment. Hence why we got 99% of university faculty useless and being paid peanuts. People who do real science (Stanley meyer, Georgi perelman, nikola tesla) they are thrown out and hated by the establishment. Sorry to burst your bubble, if its not profitable and threatens the establishment, you will be silenced, and your inventions or breakthroughs discarded.
This sooooooo a true, why? I’m from California and we have a lot of rich people here. Yes College can make you wiser but nearly all the people I know who are making $200,000+ are just either business owners or they just work super hard with lots of overtime. All the people with degrees are doing fine or they just sad for reason that school didn’t take them places they need to go.
Thank you for creating this video. I feel so seen and at the same time comforted that I am not alone struggling and attempting to restart my life :)
Aw, I'm glad that you found it comforting! Starting over journey is not easy but we can do it! 🙂
Great work!
Thank you!
I’m in my mid-30s and have completely changed my lifestyle. I used to smoke, drink, and abuse my body. A guy on TH-cam woke me up by saying, ‘No matter how much-$100,000, $1,000,000, or $10,000,000-without the 1 in front of the zeros, it’s worthless. That 1 is your health.
Love that! Thank you for sharing that!
It reminds me of high school, when I had to choose a major between science, IT, accounting, and art. Because of my crush, who I was madly in love with, I chose science just to follow her. It cost me two years of struggle, but it was worth that I got to see her every day 😊
Thank you very much. Your channel is a cozy little corner of the internet that always brings hope to me. The video about your story really resonated with me, it was quite beautiful too. I was actually on the path to becoming a biologist a while ago, and now I'm studying electrical engineering, I love both fields though ;) I hope you find what you love to do and continue to take us through your journey.
aw, thank you for your kind comment! This totally made my day! And, best of luck to your journey as well! ☺
Incredible
Seldom are people lucky enough to find a career in something they love. Until then, make money from what you're good at, work for free on what you love.
This is good advice! Thanks! The book <so good they can't ignore you> also addresses this topic quite well.
Stay fake. Oh fake, what fake. Okay fake. Understandable fake. That’s cold fake. That’s low fake
I also bet that gay women will be your favorite biology subject.
Do you know about a book that's called "The Gay Science" by Friedrich Nietzsche?
I've never heard of that book! 👀
A lot of the people who do PhDs do them because they are foreigners who want to settle in another country. That is also true for postdocs. And yeah, the reason is mostly because no one wants to do both PhDs and postdocs. Therefore institutes are somewhat desperate to find people and they look abroad. I know people who were born in poor countries and through a PhD they could migrate to the USA legally and stay there, get a good job, buy a house and settle. Stuff like that is pretty much impossible for most people from poor countries. I like your honest approach in this videos BTW, it's better than the clickbaity approach I see elsewhere.
Thanks for watching and for your comment! I also came to the U.S. through the common international student route, and I agree that many international students pursue the traditional degree path because they want a second chance at life in another country.
