A Rear End Observation Car View of Conway Scenic Railroad's Valley Branch - Conway to North Conway
During my recent trip to New Hampshire, I took a ride on Conway Scenic Railroad’s Valley Train which operates between North Conway and Conway. I upgraded my seating to First Class so I could ride in their open air observation car, the Gertrude Emma.
Built in 1898 for the Pullman Company, the car was originally named “Libertas” and was used on the PRR’s Pennsylvania Limited between New York and Chicago. When Pennsylvania Station was built, wooden cars like this were downgraded. It was renamed “Marysville” and ran on the Western Pacific’s “Feather River Route” between Salt Lake City and San Francisco. In 1922 it was purchased by the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad in Maine. It was acquired by Conway Scenic in 1975 and fully restored it in 1987 when it was renamed “Gertrude Emma” after the wife of the railroad’s first president.
For an extra charge, if you speak to the narrator on board the train, you can ride the rear platform of the car on it’s return trip. (You could ride both ways, but with the locomotive horn right there, I would not recommend you do so!)

Why are there no seats in the new hall? Looks like hostile architecture.
There are seating areas for ticketed passengers. Seating inside would attract the growing homeless population in the city to take up residence.

we could have saved ourselves some grief had we known that they are two separate buildings. this wasnt clear to us on our recent visit. when taking the Amtrax trains go directly to the Monahan train station. Penn station will get you there but it can be a long confusing walk with luggage have the taxis drop you off at the train hall which is the building on the other side of Madison Square Garden and across the street - lesson learned!

Nice video. Mine Rd., Crossing looks like a great morning spot. I want to be there and catch all of the Washington bound VRE fleet on my trip there in a couple of weeks. Have to get up early. At Fredericksburg station I was there in November 2022 and I caught the northbound auto train past there at 3 o’clock in the afternoon.

LIRR at Grand Central is a game-changer - so nice to not have to go west to Penn to go east to Jamaica!

Can't imagine being a new arrival to NYC via the train. What a jumbled mess the station has become and I'm a native of New York City who's used this facility for years.
Eh it's shabby, not gonna lie. But it has seen some improvements.
For a former railroader like me, Grand Central Terminal is home.

Such a shame the original was demolished. If it had stayed or been mostly preserved, I would've liked traveling more. Heck, the city could've gotten extra tourist dollars

Excellent video! I have two questions about this line...since I was on it just a few days ago for the first time and noticed some things: 1. Why do some Keystones have double ended AEM-7s? 2. Do any trains use the center tracks nowadays? The line was built with incredible capacity (for the overwhelming amount of PRR traffic)...why do so few if any trains use the center tracks?
