LIRR Action on the Main Line in Elmont and Bellerose - 02/01/2025
January was a rough month to try to get trackside. Between playoff football games and brutally cold weather, there was always an excuse to stay home I guess.
New month…and no football, so time to get back to filming content, if just for a little bit. Saturday, February 1st I stayed close to home and just caught some action along the LIRR Main Line at Elmont and Bellerose.
I’ve shot many times at Bellerose, but this was a first time at Elmont, one of the newest LIRR stations. Built inside of Queens Interlocking, it opened to service the new UBS arena, on the grounds of Belmont Racetrack. There are quite a few trains along the Main Line here, even for a weekend, and its nice to get a look at the old Queens tower and the still-remaining PRR position light signals. As you can see from the footage shot at Bellerose, some of their replacements have been installed and covered in bags, so their time is fleeting.
Enjoy this latest addition to the channel!

Norfolk Southern Action on the Reading & Harrisburg Lines - 12/30/2024
มุมมอง 75หลายเดือนก่อน
My last railfan journey for 2024 was on Monday, December 30th. The weather was looking iffy back home but better in Pennsylvania so I was off to catch some action on Norfolk Southern’s Reading and Harrisburg Lines. As I’m usually working during the week, I had the benefit of catching local H11 working in Alburtis, something you don’t normally get when shooting here on the weekends. There was al...

While on a map, Connecticut isn’t too far from my home base of Long Island, it can be a pain to get to driving through the city. If I’m going to go through that, I will usually just travel to New Jersey or Pennsylvania. But there is a solution which I took advantage of to shoot some different Christmas trains…the ferry across Long Island Sound. So on a very cold December 14th, I headed to The N...

With the better than average weather we’ve been having, I wanted to take another trip up to the Hudson Highlands to catch the last few leaves holding on to the trees and catch some freight and maybe passenger action if the River Line was slow. An Afternoon of Rush Hour Action on Metro North's Hudson Line at Riverdale - 10/23/2024

Before we moved the clocks back an hour, I wanted to catch an afternoon of rush hour action on Metro North’s Hudson Line. While I usually get up there on weekends to watch the action, weekdays offer much more variety and number of trains. On October 23, 2024, I took the train up to Riverdale. It’s the last station on the line which is still in New York City limits, provides great views of the H...

Sunday, October 6th was another warm and sunny day during my visit to Norfolk Southern’s Pittsburgh Line. I spent the majority of the morning and early afternoon in the town of Lilly, PA. Lilly is a nice morning spot to catch eastbounds and then shift to overhead shooting from the road overpass. While I didn’t catch any heritage or special interest locomotives that day, there were a few freshly...

East Broad Top…One of the best rail preservation stories around. The railroad that lost its main source of revenue in 1955 and just abruptly closed and sold for scrap. But the owner, Nick Kovalchick, saw something special in the line and didn’t scrap it. Five years later, the railroad reopened to celebrate the Town of Orbisonia’s bicentennial and four miles of the line was refurbished to provid...

On Sunday, September 8th, I headed up to one of my favorite single day trips - Iona Island on CSX’s River Line. The old Pennsy Mountain Division has been a favorite spot to visit for decades!
Superb! A nice mix of freight and passenger services. The shots of CSX working the wye in Hudson were great. Well done!
Thank you! I've always wanted to catch the freights working at Hudson, especially the street running, but don't get up that way during the week very much. Still have to get the street running.
Excellent video! Looks like a great location.
Glad you enjoyed it! It was a good day trackside and yes a great spot.
Great to see stuff running again on the EBT...Especially STEAM!
Their future looks very bright as well.
these are the same trains that they use for the vancouver skytrain, but these ones at jfk are modded
Conrail Engine looks sharp. One of my favorite Heritage locos. Reminds me when that was the norm pulling up the hill!
The post office is so gorgeous
They don't build them like that anymore!
Why are there no seats in the new hall? Looks like hostile architecture.
There are seating areas for ticketed passengers. Seating inside would attract the growing homeless population in the city to take up residence.
@@RailfanJourneysI suspected something like that was happening.
Cost is $4 .25 now at the time this comment was made due to Governor slashing the price
Wonderful news! Any savings is appreciated!
we could have saved ourselves some grief had we known that they are two separate buildings. this wasnt clear to us on our recent visit. when taking the Amtrax trains go directly to the Monahan train station. Penn station will get you there but it can be a long confusing walk with luggage have the taxis drop you off at the train hall which is the building on the other side of Madison Square Garden and across the street - lesson learned!
Nicely done, no silly Horn show or Yakking.

LIRR at Grand Central is a game-changer - so nice to not have to go west to Penn to go east to Jamaica!
It is more convenient if that's the part of Manhattan that you're headed to.

Can't imagine being a new arrival to NYC via the train. What a jumbled mess the station has become and I'm a native of New York City who's used this facility for years.
It's not too bad once you get used to it. What many do not realize is the station area (platforms) are still the same, just the headhouse was moved across the street. It's better than it was, but nothing like the original.
I took the train into grand central and it was just fine
Eh it's shabby, not gonna lie. But it has seen some improvements.
For a former railroader like me, Grand Central Terminal is home.
Grand Central has called several railroads home. I'm curious...Who did you work for if you don't mind me asking? And thanks for viewing and your comment!
@@RailfanJourneysI was a station agent for MTA New York City Subway.
Hey I was out this day as well got 13 trains
It was a very busy morning! Sadly the afternoons get very slow. Such is the way with the River Line...
Such a shame the original was demolished. If it had stayed or been mostly preserved, I would've liked traveling more. Heck, the city could've gotten extra tourist dollars
This is all before I was even thought of...but if you look at photos of Pennsylvania Station in its later years after it hadn't been taken care of as it should, I can see where some may have deemed it "an eyesore" and didn't care if it was demolished. Sadly this was the building sacrificed for the preservation movement. Thanks for your comment!
@@RailfanJourneys Well at least Grand Central was spared. One bird is better than none
@@RailfanJourneysThat's because the owners, citing increasing costs, allowed it to fall into disrepair.

@@RailfanJourneys my pleasure, mate
@@RailfanJourneys i have some cool videos of the Portuguese trains that you will enjoy a lot.
Excellent video! I have two questions about this line...since I was on it just a few days ago for the first time and noticed some things: 1. Why do some Keystones have double ended AEM-7s? 2. Do any trains use the center tracks nowadays? The line was built with incredible capacity (for the overwhelming amount of PRR traffic)...why do so few if any trains use the center tracks?
Glad you enjoyed! As I mentioned in the comments, I've always tended to railfan this line west of SEPTA service, so this was a first for me. When you see the double-ended Amtrak trains, it usually means there was some type of problem with the cab car. Other than that, it's still a passenger coach so it is usually easier to "bury" it until it can be repaired. As with many multiple track lines, the outside tracks will get more usage as most of the stations can be accessed. Only a few have island-style platforms.

Thanks. The views at Snake Hole Creek are best in the morning and just involve mostly hiking in. The rock cuts at the north end of the island involve hiking in and just walking up the rock cuts. Nothing too bad actually. There is actually a flat concrete surface where I set the tripod up on the one side. Don't know what was originally there, I've always wondered what it was.
