Thanks for visiting my channel.
Here you will find a mixture of content centred around Aylesbury, UK. HS2 is featured a lot as it passes by the town. I also like to cycle around the area and recently have gone much further as I now have a decent e-bike. This enables me to show some beautiful places around Buckinghamshire and beyond.
I hope you enjoy what you see and please like, subscribe and donate if you can :)

HS2 - Missenden Valley | 29th Dec 2024
I return to the Missenden Valley after a long break of 9 months. Some parts of HS2's construction have progressed a lot since I was last here, yet others have remained largely unchanged. As I explained in the video, conditions were challenging because of fog and it was also late in the day so I didn't have much time to fly the drone.

Railway Relics - Quainton to Padbury

On this fascinating cycle ride through the Buckinghamshire countryside, I went to Padbury, a short distance from the village, to look at the remains of its viaduct. I started at Quainton, where I flew the drone over Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, passed through the Claydons, and crossed the EWR line near Verney Junction. I then arrived at Padbury and flew the drone over the viaduct. The views ...

I thought revisiting the Oxford Road cycleway just outside Aylesbury would be good to see if I was overly critical about its condition. The A41 was always unpleasant to cycle down. Nows its so bare of vegitation it seems like the vehicles go even faster.
3:07 got to love how that van driver tells you to get on the cycle path before its even started. What a plank.
@bikeman123 Yeah, that was stupid as I was just about to go on the cyclepath. He probably meant the one on the opposite side of the road but that doesn't go where I want so that's why I was still on the road at that point.
They closed that road half a dozen times, sometimes for a week, yet it became a rush job because everytime they closed the road they did bugger all. Yes we saw how beyond looking at their phones and a guy cleaning the road, nothing was being done. No wonder hs2 is costing 4 x times the expected amount.
Really good video. Your inclusion of a commentary and maps so I know what I'm looking at is excellent, too many others covering HS2 don't provide this information. Keep up the good work and thank you 👏
@Seringapatam Thanks. Yes, I know what you mean about other videos out there. A lot of them just fly over something without giving any information. It's rather pointless doing that unless the viewer is familiar with what they're seeing.
What good were the police , spert from causing nore traffic problems.
@tomatoes3 I thought they dealt with it pretty well. They were there some time after the fire had burnt out, just to be on the safe side but it was all over in about 15 minutes.
Thank you for the update Karl
What a disgraceful mess. It should never have been built.
The amount of land used during the construction is quite staggering. Will it be reinstated to it’s original use once construction is completed?
Most of what you see will be returned to nature, probably more bio diverse than the mostly mono crop farmland that was there before. In many cases it's being used for temporary spoil storage, saving having to move it on public roads, rather they can use the trace to move it as it becomes available.
Thanks for keeping us updated, another great video
Great video - thanks for keeping us up to date.
@TonyAbbeyFETraining Thanks, it was good to revisit the area.
The WD viaduct doesn't look wide enough for twin tracks!
It will be, once the top deck is installed.
Hi Karl I was standing on the Ellesborough Road just by where you were filming on Boxing Day. That temporary bridge is quite an impressive structure close up - far more substantial than you would expect for the few cars that use it. I assume construction lorries use the roads along the future track bed .Be interesting to see what happens on the other side towards Small Dean. There must be a huge amount of soil to shift to create the green tunnel. Happy New Year.
Nice 👍 🎉
Great to see that part of the project again, buddy. You did well to get the tunnel portals. You must have got pretty muddy on Kings Lane; it looked rather nasty!
@cargy930 It was my shoes that got the dirtiest. I had cleaned them before leaving the house!
@@KarlVaughan Always the way! :)
Thanks for this Karl. Your commentary makes your videos much more interesting than the others! Looking forward to another update of this section soon. There is some interesting engineering there!
good video _ interesting to see the progress along the route from the north portal _ will you be covering the slide of the Small Dean viaduct when it takes place in 2025 ? _ how does that bridge film from the bike ?_ height & size etc _ looking forward to seeing the postings over the coming months 👏
@Michael-61-n3l Thanks for watching. I'm not yet sure about Small Dean Viaduct, at least being close to it on the ground as it goes over that busy A413 and there aren't any cycleways along there.
I like it, am wondering why Green End is so truncated. It’s much longer than the small section that appears.
@christinakokis5926 This is a fairly common thing where people point out that I missed a certain part of a village. It's not on purpose. Granborough was the last village I did on that day and I had been shooting elsewhere which used up battery power. I didn't want to risk flying for too long which is why I briefly showed Green End.
You spelled viaduct wrong. Great video though, it’s so interesting seeing things from another perspective.
@matthewclifton9145 Oh no! Something I can't change. Thanks for watching.
Check out the Swiss "Canton" way of sorting out the "politics" before construction along the entire route begins.
That would add 8 years to the programme. But it would be a good idea.
What drone have you got Karl?
@norfolks123 It's a Mini 4 Pro.
@@KarlVaughanthanks. I’ve just got a mini 3 myself but haven’t flown it as high yet as you yet. Great videos
@norfolks123 I think I had that drone before this one. As soon as the Mini 4 was announced I ordered it straight away. The main feature for me is waypoints which allows you to create flight paths. As I revisit particular places I just load them up and press start. It records exactly the same shots every time. As for the height I go to (which is just under 120m), I like to keep a distance from people, particularly when I fly over quiet villages. I think DJI are bringing the next model in the series so the Mini 4 should come down in price.
Nice 👍 🎉
Considering I used to drive school buses through Granborough several times a week - sometimes twice a day - you'd think I'd remember something distinctive about the village. But I got nuthin'!! About the only thing I can recall is that I used to know a mobile car mechanic who lived there. But I can't even remember his name or whereabouts in the village any more. Doesn't matter though, it's still a gorgeous part of the world to live in, and thanks for reminding me of that Karl.
@cargy930 I suppose it all looks different from the air. I still have more to edit so keep watching :)
@@KarlVaughan It wasn't a criticism bud. The video's great, I'm just cussing out my lack of memory. :D
Always a billy-bonus when I get to see my old home of 30 years ago on one of your vids bud! I'm slightly addicted to an american sawmill operator's YT channel, and he commonly leaves logs on the ground for a year or two before putting putting them through his mill. So I don't think we can read much into their being left there at the moment. It would be an horrendous waste of good timber if they leave them to rot forever though.
@cargy930 I'll be interested to see if the tree needed to be cut down. I know there is an access road being put it near that spot for a transformer station.
@@KarlVaughan They'd only get slapped wristies if they made a mistake like that anyway. It's sad that things are this way, but it's what happens when big devlopments and Gov contracts are involved. HNY bud.
Thank You Karl. Have a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year
PS - frustrating that instead of safer traffic separation for cyclists (as is more common in Europe) we get painted white lines here...
@chrisbailiss7309 I think they painted the line so that drivers can see the division between road and pathway. Regarding mixed use paths such as this one, in Aylesbury there is quite a variety of different finishes. There are ones with the reddish tarmac and some with black tarmac. Some are divided into pedestrian on one side and cycleway on the other and that is usually a different colour. In this case though we've got the bare minimum. It's wide enough to be divided but instead we just have to use our own judgement when passing pedestrians, which I'm very much used to. It's not a problem for me as I'm always cautious.
Thanks Karl. Is the date in the title of this video (9th Nov) an accident?
@chrisbailiss7309 Yes - well spotted! I've amended it :)
Hello from Finland! Never been to Britain, and will probly never use this roads, but been invested in process quite a while! Very important for me that everybody has a chance to travel easily, safely and confortably, without needing to use a car. But still making smart infra for those who need car/truck for their travels. But as many have said, that bike/walkway feels unsafe and not very nice. Could have easily made bit more room to plant trees between cars and people. When trees get bigger, not only are they more pleasing for the eye, they block the noise little bit AND make road feel more safe. It is not 1970's anymore nor is it car-centric USA.
@sota_59 Finland, wow. Most of my views are from the UK so it's nice to hear from you. What we see at moment on that new bridge and the land next to it is not how it will be forever. Trees and shrubs will be planted soon so that will soften the appearance eventually. That won't help to make the path feel safer on the bridge though as that will remain exposed, apart from the opposite where grass will be planted.
Excellent work 👍 I didn't realise how vast the Solar Farm near Marsh was ! How about some footage of the new SEALR scheme ?
@slewisedwards Cheers, yes it's a vast area they've used for that solar farm. As for SEALR, I can do some of it but part of it lies within the no-fly zone of Halton airfield so it's not possible without permission.
They need the crash barrier 🚧 next to the road / cycle lane
Having walked a dog down this new road from the bugle horn. The only time I felt a risk of coming into contact with vehicles as pedestrian or cyclist, was on the bridge. That said maybe there should something more than a white line on the bridge section would be more appropriate.
Blue structures look like water or gas pipes. Hopefully they'll leave the cut trees next to the '30mph' bridge in situ to part mitigate the vast ecological damage, such as the vast badger set they unlawfully buried.
Easy to claim on social media they "unlawfully" did something, but the reality is they will have done everything to the letter of the law.
@Polarbear1-b6j They blocked a group of badger sets so large they could be seen on Google earth. The mitigation set provided was tiny and in waterlogged ground. The largest set is now under one of the largest earthworks. Their environmental mitigation is appalling, not just my opinion but also of the wildlife trusts.
And yet none of these sorts of claims ever seem to survive actual scrutiny. And the various environmental organisations have harmed themselves with hyperbole like the infamous Woodland Trust 108 woods claim, quickly debunked. One wood for example being the other side of a major road and existing railway line. A badger set visible on Google Earth, hyperbole indeed.
Great vids as always. Is it not too far to get to Calvert, the EWR interchange and the "bat cave"?
@dominiccottrill2387 Thanks for watching. I will do that section properly in due course. I have actually been up there recently. The video can be found here: th-cam.com/video/Oi4e7ACmSsE/w-d-xo.html
Very irritating 'music' Karl, please abandon use of this. 😞
@SWRural-fk2ub Absolutely not :)
I think the music fits brilliantly, really makes it artistically enjoyable as well as educational.
@slewisedwards Thanks for that. How are my sound levels? I'm not sure if they balance ok.
@@KarlVaughan Seems absolutely spot on to me !!
@@SWRural-fk2ub Or you can use your volume control?
Karl, thanks for the videos, I only wish you produced a few more from Quainton on up to Calvert. I persuaded 'The Boy' to do that. It was a while ago. I did appreciate the recent drone flight up to Quainton railway. But please, the incinerator and the BBOWT area south of the incinerator. Looking to see what is happening to save the bats and if any work is being done for unloading rubbish at the incinerator from the old line.
@SteveTheTechy I've actually done my flight plans for Quainton and a bit further towards Calvert. I think I will need to do two separate trips for the whole area as it covers a lot of miles. Also, finding spots to fly from that are near the subjects is the challenge. I'll work something out. I will do Quainton sometime in January.
Just another law breaking pedal cyclists riding on the footpaths.
