Why the GM LS Engine uses a Cast Oil Pan and Full Circle Bellhousing - Driveline Beaming / Vibration
One thing that is different between the old Small Block Chevrolet and the LS Small Block engines is that the older engine used a stamped steel oil pan and the newer LS series uses a structural cast aluminum oil pan that has attachments for a full circle bell housing and mounting pattern with bolts below the crankshaft centerline.
In the late 1980s, I was involved in a team effort to investigate and improve the vibration characteristics and strength of the connections between the engine and transmission. This work contributed to the LS having a deeper skirt on the block and a cast oil pan combined with a revised bell housing on the transmissions to provide additional bolts for batter structural attachment. This video explains the basics of what we learned and why we revised the designs to improve the bolt pattern for mounting to the engine.

It always amazed me how GM made some of the best engines ever built and some of the worst ones built sometimes at the same time! The LS is probably the best small displacement gasoline engine ever built. While the 3100, 3400 v6s are in my opinion the worst. I’ve yet to see a stock one that will last more then a hour or two of hard driving before blowing a head gasket or throwing a rod. Even just running one at 3,000-4,000 rpm for an hour or two will result in a blown head gasket. The only fix is cutting the block for orings and installing head studs. Having to run studs, O rings, and copper gaskets on a stock daily driver is absolutely insane, yet GM built millions of these POS’s without fixing the problems for a long time with zero fucks given. This is the same company that gave us the wonderful EMD 567s, 645s, 710s, the 71 series Detroit diesel, the SBC, BBC, and LS engines.

The turbo 350 is cheaper to rebuild but i also need to raise the rear gear ratio. The turbo 700 would not need a rear ratio change but needs an adaptor plate that looks a bit flimsy. I think i will go with the correct bell housing now to avoid fitting a hinge in my driveline. Cheers.

Thanks for the explanation always good to hear what the engineers were thinking at that time. To me the LS is not worth all the headaches for this older fella. The old way and blocks were easy to work on, etc. Im enjoying learning the 92 tech on my sb 3.1 litre v6 (189 ci) Camaro RS! Very fun motor with good pep and drivability and probably gas mileage. It has the 4L60 - first year for the 700 changeover to 4L60. My car is the only one at any show with original v6 in it. Crossfire injection ( I noticed the Fieros have these engines too - some 2.8). I appreciate you teaching us about these LS motors though! In a few years, no classic car will be without one at the rate people are installing these computer-heavy tethered engines

Wow, what a lot of effort! One note, hopefully helpful to folks checking in 1+ year later: For the lower shift cable, early Mercruisers had a spec of 5-7/8” rather than 6” center-to-center. Around the late 90’s, that changed to 6” instead. I don’t know how you might have gotten an early cable in a newer boat, but they started dimpling them so they couldn’t be adjusted. EXCEPT you can use a 1/8” bit to drill out the dimples (not too deeply) and restore adjustment! On my boat, the upper (remote) cable doesn’t adjust at the barrel nut. That bit just swivels around the cable, but can be clipped at one of two fixed starting positions. The adjustment is made at the cable tip, with a jamb nut. Must be a weird after market thing. It’s given me fits making my adjustments.

Thank you for the comments. Since this video, mine has been behaving very well. I have a rare occasion with a stall on a shift, but very rare. I did consider the possibility of drilling the dimpled stakes out, but given that it is working very well, I haven't been motivated to go back in and try that. I am concerned that I might damage the cable and need to replace it. Having just done that job on my '98 Mercruiser along with a bellows change, it's not much fun.

The 2 piece rear main you could change in an hour or two. the one piece rear main takes 4-6 hours because you have to remove the transmission. Atmospheres Explosive. “ATEX” is an abbreviation for the ATEX Directive and is short for “Atmospheres Explosive”. It is a set of European Union regulations that are designed to ensure the safety of products being used in explosive environments. Is ATEX accepted in the USA? ATEX is a uniquely European Union directive for protection against explosive atmospheres. No. It's not harmonized with NFPA / National Fire Protection Association. Combustible dust standards and not considered by OSHA an acceptable certification for electrical equipment used in hazardous locations. Protect your Workers and Protect your Company from Liability. I agree, you are correct that that these fans are not UL / OSHA acceptable for use in a business application or job site. I noted that in a previous video, but may not have made that clear. I purchased this for personal use rather than business. The European specs may not exactly line up with US spec, but after reading the specifics of their ratings, I judged that for my use, the ATEX certification seemed acceptable. Anyone using this fan should verify that it meets their needs. The European countries want safe products in their countries as much as we do in the US. But, once again, it is not acceptable to use these fans in a business subject to OSHA regulation and I would prefer to have one with UL listing.

However, in my limited experience the cam bearings don't survive as well, great engines I've put a lot of miles on 6.0's. There are times where their expertise and experience can be helpful in guiding a design. In my own case, when I was working on manual transmissions long ago, we were supporting a stock class road race team and using the feedback to gain experience and refine our designs. Works great when out of the water but as soon as the shift interruption plate gets involved when in water it becomes much stiffer. • @bitsofwisdom460
      @bitsofwisdom460 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

If it works with proper effort with the engine off, you may want to check the adjustment on that shift interrupt switch. The shift interrupt switch is intended to do two things, it has two ramps. First, it cuts power for an instant when you are shifting into gear to take load off the dog clutch teeth on the lower unit gears. Second, it should take the load off the gears to help them disengage. In other words, if you are trying to slide the dog clutch teeth apart with engine power on them, the effort will be higher. The switch should cut power momentarily to help the gears release. If it doesn't cut power or doesn't cut power until you move the shift lever further, the effort would be higher.

@bitsofwisdom460. Haven’t seen a slide rule in years sir! Just asking - have you ever seen a “spiral” slide rule? It looked like a two stage telescope and you “twisted” one tube in or out of the other to make your calculation. I think the “cursor”/datum line was on the bezel where the smaller tube passed into the larger one. Apparently since the action was spiral/rotary, this effectively increased the potential length of the slide rule - beyond the fully extended length of the tubes. Hence the calculations were more accurate! Probably a specialised type of slide rule for a specific calculating task. Thank you for your video. Stay safe and well.

Hi Dan I have a question for you about the charcoal evaporator canister(305 TBI): the other day I found a great ammount of fuel in it and in the vent line from the tank too,my check valves are all new,the Camaro manual says to replace the filter in the canister but mine is sealed at the bottom,no way to open it so my idea is to delete that canister because of safe you know,I don’t want my Camaro in flames for that problem. What do you think? Is it possible to delete that?Thank you.

You're correct that you need to address this issue to eliminate the liquid fuel for safety. I can't advise to remove or eliminate the canister, but rather find a way to make it work correctly. I'm not expert in this area, but this is my best understanding: There are two basic reasons to have fuel in the canister and the lines. First is overfilling the fuel tank. It is intended to have an air bubble at the top where the vapor line connects, but a high fuel level (perhaps more than 3 clicks at the nozzle) and possibly combined with parking on a slope can cause fuel to be pushed up into the vapor line. Second, there can be cases where vapors collect and condense in the canister. The canister has an area where some liquid fuel can collect to be drawn out in normal operation later. If the purge function isn't working correctly and drawing out the vapors, fuel may continue to collect and overload the canister. You need to verify that the lines and solenoid to the intake manifold are providing vacuum to draw vapor from the canister. I haven't seen a GM canister in the '80s cars that wasn't round with a filter in the bottom - it may be possible, but I don't know. They normally take in air from the bottom. I have seen some with the filter missing, but there ought to be some openings for air intake. If it was mine, I would try to blow out the lines with compressed air to remove liquid fuel. I don't know the best way to drain the canister. I have seen some others who have tried to flow compressed air through it or found ways to open the canister and replace the carbon, but I have no experience to add there. Only a suggestion for further study.

@@bitsofwisdom460 Yes,sometimes I overfill my tank,it’s my defect you know….. Perhaps that’s the reason,my other '88 Firebird has the same completely closed canister,I can try to swap on the Camaro and see.I have to search when that solenoid is active. The vacuum lines are all free.

At yard sales and thrift stores once very expensive Eugene Dietzgen Co. slide rules can be had for a couple of dollars. Like a Dietzgen Maniphase Multiplex Vector Type Log Log Rule - Cat. No. N1725. Some of its scales are so small (on the LL3 & LL03) a magnifying glass would be needed to see it well enough to use accurately. I can only use it to multiply and divide. I still have my 6" aluminum Pickett slide rule my mother bought me in High School. Ditto drafting machines and scales for drafting machines.

I have no fans at any speed working. Resistor isnt the issue, replaced the old one, still nothing. Now I've tested my fan speed switch it checks out ok. I'm guessing its not the high speed relay, as none of the speeds work not just the high speed. What should I investigate next?

Assuming that you have a good power feed from the fuse block to the switch and since everything tests out ok to the resistor, the manual would tell you to check the voltage to the fan motor and grounds. If heater only system, voltage test from orange feed wire to ground should have battery voltage and voltage test from orange wire to black (ground wire) should have battery voltage. If A/C, it's the same except purple wire is feed rather than orange. If both tests pass, fan motor is likely bad. If first test passes and second test fails, then ground connection is bad.

We called these “ guessing sticks” as you needed to know approximately what the result would be. My maths teacher made us learn the square of every (whole) number from 1 to 20 and every number at 5 increments up to 100 - which also helped when using Logarithms.

I still have my 6” and 12” K + E. Amazing how fast we got with these. I owned an engineering firm for over 30 years and I was always amazed at how my engineers with calculators lost the concept of about what the answer should be, especially orders of magnitude. And trying to explain to the newbies how a six digit answer was wrong when the original data was only good to one or two decimal places. Hard to believe the 747 was designed with slide rules and drafting boards in only about a year…

I believe significant digits and %error were taught in all chemistry and physics classes both high school and college. It is amazing how people conveniently have forgotten and ignored that concept. It is also disturbing how the financial world completely ignores it! They are making business decisions without understanding the accuracy and errors in their numbers.

My grand mother used to work as quality control in one French company that built slide rulers. so yes, I know, I have had free (slide and not) rulers all my life, I am about to retire and still use one of the free rulers that got rejected by QC and she gave to me. I think what you missed to say is that slide rulers were based on logarithms, so it replaced a multiplication by an addition: to multiply 2x3, you aligned the origin (1) of the moving segment to the number 2 on the fixed segment (that is log(2)) and moved the reading transparent bit to the number 3 (log(3)) on the moving segment. Just below that, on the fixed segment, you read 6 (log(6)) because you just added the length of log(2) to the length of log(3). That was the first (and only to this day) practical usage I saw of logarithm. Slide rulers also taught you to think about the result rather than blindly trusting the number displayed by a calculator (and ignoring a possible miss type on the input).

I went through school just after the introduction of calculators into the classroom. I remember the big slide ruler above the chalkboard. Never was taught how to use it but always carious about it. I have pick up couple of the slide rulers from estate sales. I wasn't able to figure out how it is used. Thank you!

When I went to college a slide rule was mandatory. Even when electronic calculators became available we couldn’t use 4:59 them in exams. We had to use a slide rule

I graduated high school in '63. I had a Pickett Trig rule in HS. In the Navy I got a Pickett electronics 'rule and bought a Sun-Hemi 'rule when I got to Japan. I have about 8 or 9 'rules now, 2 of them circular, 1 a binary rule. The nice thing about 'rules is they don't require batteries and you can take the slide out and use it to make a logarithmic graph. They have also outlasted a lot of calculators. The Oughtred Society is THE goto place for Slide Rule info. You can buy many different kinds, even make your own, from Sphere Research in Canada.

I had to use a slide rule throughout my engineering course at college, although we did use hand-cranked mechanical adding machines for one of the exams. Like you, I also had a 6 inch pocket slide rule. It was remarkable how much could be done on these simple devices. I bought my first electronic calculator (a 4 function Casio) in Japan for Y20,000 in 1973, but I still kept my slide rules for a few more years.

You could do a whole series on the old style calculators. I remember the engineering students walking around with the leather slide rule scabbards hanging from their belts. I got a bamboo slide rule with a plastic covering. It was a log, log, deci, trig unit. The bamboo was supposed to be more accurate than the plastic ones. There were books out on how to calculate how good or badly inaccurate your slide rule happened to be. Problem with the plastic ones was the slide tended to get crooked after a while and your accuracy would be off. Prior to the hand held calculators were the desk calculators running on 110 volts. After you punched in the numbers and hit the calculate key the Frieden units would start to whirr, then go ka-chunk, ka-chunk, ka-chunk unit they finally finished the calculation. Because of the lack of calculators my statistics class had a whole chapter on how to manually sort data. We'd spend hours doing data sorting. Now, you just put the data in an Excel spread sheet, press the enter key and the data is sorted. And, of course, Excel does a lot of statistics work as a matter of course. We'd spend hours looking through a data list to find highest/lowest numbers. Spend a lot of time calculating average. Now, all done in less than a second by the Excel sheet. Ah, the good old days! ... Not!

this brought back memories for me too as i was doing Industrial arts subjects in high school and all we got was slide rules to do all the calculations. I still have mine in great condition. Its a Kent 309 Student and still works fine. As you mentioned when calculators first came out in the early 70s I wanted one because i was racing pigeons at the time and needed to calculate accurate velocities. I got a remington Casio for christmas . Cost a huge $52 australian back then was very expensive, and it only did the 4 basic calcs. When i went to Uni i got a Texas Instruments Programmable Calculator and that was great. Still have that too and it works but the mag strips (where you saved the programs) don't read to well now.
