Rainbow Islands seems an odd choice. Both versions were absolutely great (and actually it was a game that was universally well ported ). I think it is probably the best platformer of its day on both.

I have 2 Saturn's both japanese. Every single game I have is japanese so I don't even have a converter. And let's face it UK Saturn's are 50hz and require a switch install as well. Japanese all the way. Get the mk1 you deserve in the Japanese version. Mk2s don't play jp outrun FYI. Mk2s have a modified chip which is incompatible with outrun. There was a re release to get round it which I have but it's hard to tell them apart unless it's advertised as being the 2nd print. Also, not sure about saturn but ps1 version of bubble bobble stage 97 is impossible to pass without a form of clear screen power up/umbrella skip. They coded the wind wrong so the bubbles never travel where you need to go. Shame really as its 240p version and pretty good looking.

Everyone bangs on about how good Doncaster is, its not that special compared to the rest of the shows. Japanese Saturn all the way. Almost all the games are in English on the Japanese version except for RPG's.

I saw a few things on the video that l traded in to Allan at Forgotten Worlds. Chaos Engine and Skyblazer for snes (got shortchanged on the trade) and the Playful Intelligence boxed C64.

That turbo basic just looks like it gives you extra BASIC commands to make it easier to draw graphics and sprites. It’s easier than poking a shed load of decimal values that represent bytes in video ram.

I had a CPC6128 and a friend of mine had a C64, I was never completely happy with Amstrad games. The C64 was faster because of hardware sprites, and smooth scrolling, though colours looked a bit dull on that machine. The Amstrad 160x200 resolution always looked blocky to me. I always wished for an Amstrad CPC that would have had 320x200 with 16 colours, hardware sprites and the SID sound chip. That computer would have ruled the 8 bit machines. When looking at these comparisons it looks to me that they mostly look better because of the colour palette, not because of the speed. And even though some of the sprites look more detailed, they are still 160x200, which makes them blocky. For me the ideal 8-bit machine didn't exist, and shortly afterwards the 16-bit machines took over.

Decent video, and some are open and shut (e.g. chase HQ). Reckon though escape from the planet, ghostbusters 2, rainbow islands, Batman are much better to play on the c64 even if the still colours impress more on the CPC!

It is unfair to have a look at this through emulators. Run the actual hardware. Then a Amstrad has a head start already, as the VIC chip outputs garbage. The colour palette you show for the C64 is wrong: in reality it would have wanted it looked like this: 2:28 , but it's far from looking like that. Smear a layer of diahrea over that image, and add some aggresive chroma bleeding and top it of with a layer of dark black smoke, and you get a more realistic impression. For example the impossible to read washed out purple-on-purple BASIC uses is absent in your palette. And RED was nowhere looking like RED, it was dark brown at best. Maybe if you pump the CRT brightness and saturation to max. I do not agree either that the SID is better either. C64 sound is unique, but its character can be highly annoying too (bubble overdose), and the CPC has stereo, which is worth much more than a low-pass filter on the SID. And last but not least, C64 BASIC is utter garbage. CPC BASIC is one of the best, with unique ease of use. And the CPC had 80 character mode, something Commodore could not figure out, and even failed at with the C128.

Been going since it first opened, cant beat the place, seen a few machines come and go being the tester easily find faults on machines

I had this and astro wars as a kid, use to play them well into the 90s. Never knew what my dad did with them as think we may have sold them on a car boot sale at some point. Only last year i found astro warscat my local retrobfames shop and now just required invaders from space ans scramble.

This game is nothing like Scramble. The Tomy version is far superior and at least replicates 4 levels of the game.

Wow! What a great exhibit! I remember having many of these things, and still have a few lying around! I particularly remember fighting with my brother and 2 sisters for the E.T. rub on transfers every week when mum got a new box of Shredded Wheat or Shreddies, and raiding my brothers wardrobe when he went out to play with his Casio VL-Tone organ. Having dug out a few of my old 80's video tapes recently, I have to wonder whether I can still claim on the Scotch VHS tapes Lifetime Guarantee!

An amazing video full of nostalgia. The BMX Burner, I’ve still got mine and the Vektar, which I got for Christmas in 85. My Dad was very generous! Wish I still had that, I think my Dad gave it to one of his friends kids. The Puma bag which I had for school, the Come and Praise book which I had at junior school, the list goes on!

Really well put together video. I don't have much fondness for the Ghostbusters games sadly. I had the 2600 version of the first one 🙈 I played the demo of level 1 of Ghostbusters II on the Amiga 🙈 I did try and play GBII on the C64 last year and got nowhere with that either ! I do though have GBII with the badge so that is something I guess. Was good to meet you today too 😊👍🐻

I had Ghost Busters on the C64, spent many hours playing that awesome game, I had a budget version of it which had invade a load with it so you could play space invaders as the game loaded lol
