Regardless, today I'm taking a look at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios' Yakuza 0, quite possibly the video gamiest video game to ever video game.

I used to love just putting the car in top gear as a kid, that didn't know how gearboxes worked, It worked out well I won most the races
If it's a winning strategy don't question it too much!
This game is one of very few PS2 titles I still play to this day. So simple, but has a timeless charm to it that always brings me back to it every few months. Love that you did a video on it!
Hey, thanks for watching! It's an underappreciated game for sure, like a byte-size Gran Turismo. I think the cute, cartoony Choro-Q aesthetic definitely lends itself well towards aging gracefully.
I'm 24 now. I got this from my mom back in the day. Damn, times were simpler then. I still have a deep love for the time and the stories I created for myself in this game. I couldn't speak any English, but I just relied on my imagination.
This is definitely the kind of game that captures the imagination. As a kid I always wondered if there were even more secret towns and locations somewhere over the horizon!

Audio quality is a bit off for me as a headphone user, you might be leaning too close to the mic sometimes? There are occasional pops that are quite unpleasant

Outrun2006tweaks and the texture packs for it (both released earlier this year 2024) take the pc version up to the next level, amazing work from modders, still the best arcade racer.
I haven't actually touched the PC version of OutRun since making this video, sounds like an excuse to dive back in!

This video is fantastic-great work! As someone who fell in love with the Yakuza franchise through the Like a Dragon games, I find it hard to enjoy the older, beat-em-up style games. A deep dive into games I’m fascinated by but struggle to play is exactly the kind of content I didn’t know I needed.

As you can imagine it was a bit controversial when they made the jump from beat-em-up to turn based but I'm glad they mixed it up a little and it's great to hear that they actually gained new fans from the change!

Ishin 100%, Dead Souls 50%, I do have a copy of the game, Kenzan will be entirely dependent on whether it receives a localisation! The only ones I can't see myself playing are the MMO and the PSP spin-off titles. Heck, I'll even give Fist of the North Star a go if I can find it!

Karaoke exists in the Sims, although being the Sims it's very hands off. I think the creative skill changes how well they perform.

While I've only played Like a Dragon, I've been meaning to start through the entire series as I loved Ichiban's story. I haven't played the follow-up yet either. I will say aside from my backlog woes, your review was fantastic. I was watching it on my second monitor off and on over a few hours while I was working on a project. I know it's not easy doing video game reviews, especially with longer games like Yakuza or any RPG for that matter. I would say you really captured the game phenomenally and it makes me more motivated to move Yakuza 0 up on my backlog of games I've been needing to play. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your next video!

Yakuza Like a Dragon is up there with 0 in terms of being one of the best Yakuza games but I definitely couldn't recommend the Kiryu saga enough, there's some amazing stuff there and it gives certain events of 7 and 8 a lot more gravitas for sure. And yeah haha, this review took me a long time and on the odd occasion it felt like it would never be finished. Very glad I powered through to the end though!

It's a classic for sure!
My siblings and I would obsessively play this game as a kid. We never completely beat it but we loved the way you could just drive around. It was very relaxing and some areas on the map were so special and secret - it felt like a huge accomplishment to find some places! The first time we got to meet aliens, we all freaked out. I wish more people knew about this game! I would LOVE to see this game get a rerelease (in a perfect world) cause I know I would spent WAY too many hours playing.
@@MikiEsco Couldn't agree more, definitely think this game captures that feeling of adventure in a very organic, real way. It's title is incredibly appropriate! It's the ultimate hang-out game for sure.
I remember one side quest that was a very long wild goose chase across the entire map. it was satisfying finally finishing it. I hope they remake this game somehow. Your last point resonates with me. I played this game a lot as a kid yet I never finished it. I built my city, completed most of the side quests, explored the map, but I never beat the grand prix. As a kid I was content doing what I enjoyed most without letting an objective influence my decisions. Nowadays I probably would just treat the game more like a checkbox experience.
Yeah there's a few globetrotting side quests in Road Trip (item swapping, coins, gems) and they're awesome and a great excuse to go exploring! For sure, as much as my appreciation for the game has only grown over time, these days I pretty much can't help but remain almost entirely objective focused.

Thank you for making this video. I was able to get my hands on another copy of this game about a month ago, after having lost most everything I had in a housefire in 2010 in my preteens. I managed to 100% this game in a bit over 24 hours, as a tribute to being the first game I ever bothered to play through 100% of the way all those years ago, even restarting my play though to get the only timed stamp in the game back then. I can very much share your sentiment and thoughts for this wonderful game of nostalgia and lost childhood. It was a joy to play through again and be able to experience this once more, as I did over 14 years ago. I hope as time passes that more people get to experience what a unique and strange game Road Trip Adventure really is.
No worries at all, and I'm so sorry to hear about the housefire! There's definitely something to be said for trying to reconnect with your childhood memories and hobbies and that's certainly something I've been exploring more of late. Couldn't agree more regarding Road Trip's legacy. It deserves far more than it ever got and I'll certainly be trying to push it out there more and more in future!

The first game I cheated as a child. I remember saving the game, going into the casino, putting all my money on the roulette and driving forwards. If I won I saved the game and did it again, if I lost I loaded the save and tried again hahaha
As both a Road Trip Adventure fan and a frequenter of the various Dragon Quest casino's, I'm right there with you! It's a legitimate strategy, honest!
Road Trip Adventure was my first JRPG, and I loved every second of it. I still want to replay it when I get some extra time Amazing video covering all the aspects of the game that makes it such a hidden gem in the vast ocean of video games The only thing that you missed was how amazing the soundtrack is I still listen to The Minute & Sunday on the West Side by The Push Kings to this day

To be honest, whilst I was making this video I was aware of the TikTok controversy regarding the source of the music and it's potential plagiarism, so I chose to skip over it to avoid spreading any potential misinformation. Thankfully I believe it has since been solved amiably!

Refreshing to know I'm not the only one to pull my hair out while trying to research choro-q games. You may be interested to know that some ps1 choro-q games now have english translations, notably Choro-Q Wonderful, which is very similar to Road Trip Adventure (both being developed by the same team). I look forward to the Choro-Q HG 4 video eventually
Yeah it's a right pain in the neck, I honestly don't know what the localisation teams were thinking! Hopefully my little guide here will help others in future! I definitely want to try out ChoroQ Wonderful at some point, I suspect I'll be properly looking into that once I've covered all the PS2 entries! I'd like to have a look at ChoroQ Works as well for sure.
it makes me so happy that people still know about Penny Racers, My big brother had a playstation 2, with the game, he used to play it a ton with me, still have that game and the console, such an noslatic blast to the past! truely great game.
Honestly it's a cracking little game! Really scratches that itch if you want to a play a chiller, sillier version of Gran Turismo.

Absolutely loved this game! Youre review of it is amazing and spot on encapsulates how it feels to play through as an adult and complete it so quick, where as a kid i never finished any of the Choro Q games. Still always keep my eye out for something more modern to scratch the itch of a CaRPG like this one. Was hoping Circuit Superstars were going to bring outan open world version of their game with their adt style being similiar but modernised to Choro but i am still holding my breath for it. Great video anyways! Love it 👍
Thank you very much for the kind words :). Yeah there's definitely a distinct lack of CaRPG's out there, with the exception of the rest of the series. The first Disney Pixar Cars game on PS2 isn't half bad to be fair!

It's the second game of that console generation, not of the series. It started in 1984 on the MSX. But it really started in 1996 on the PS1.
Yeah, I could have worded that better, I'm aware of the games like ChoroQ Wonderful on the PS1. I meant it as the second game in the ChoroQ HG series :)

I'm so glad this got re-released for the PS3. It's still up too on the PS3 store, if I recall correctly.
I believe it is! Just for the European store I think though which is a little unfortunate.
Man… I wished I knew how to reverse engineer this game inorder to give the game a second spin in PC. Still love it on the ps2!
It certainly deserves to live on in one way or another! They brought it to the PS3 in Europe so it would be nice if they could do the same thing for the PS5 internationally!
