Killer playing dude!
what kind of saxophone did you play sir?
Selmer Serie 3 in this video
Pretty sure this is the one my biological dad played on ''I can still hear him say enjoy it because i'll never play that exact piece ever again because I don't play her she plays me''
Thank you so much Joshua for this very helpful video. I was wondering though, is there a range limit for these sounds ? Like, can any note with the "al dente" technique (hehe) be played within a certain register ?
The teeth sounds are always around the same pitch - the keys have no influence on the teeth on reed sound, they will just filter the air sound going through
How do you teach the reverse slap?
Thank you for a wonderful demonstration! Just wondering if it would be possible to produce split tones in a very soft dynamics, creating a kind of whisper tones..?
Split tones work best when really loud, it takes a bit of energy for all the notes to speak and clash against each other, but you can have a kind of spectral sound softly.
@@JoshuaHyde Thank you 🙏
my favorite EP and god damn are you making her sing. bravo
Wonderful demonstration! Wondering that is it possible to trill while executing a split tone? Thanks :)
Yes, absolutely!
@@JoshuaHyde That would be excitingly interesting, thank you!
Excellent, Joshua. If I chose to get another Yamaha electric grand, had the discretionary money and could afford not only to ship it to me but to have it tuned, the CP80 would be my first selection. I had a 70 from 2007-2013 and foolishly let it go.
multiphonics is awful. I have yet not heard any multiphonic that are more lyrical than disturbing...
Great! Good job :-)
@@JoshuaHyde do you agree or do you have any lyrical example if multiphonics?
great examples... please could you show how to notate split sounds?

Oh thank you .. I missed that moment!
Hi Joshua Hyde I’m Joshua Hyde although I go by JJ because that’s my initials and good music
thanks!!!!
Nice playing! Great tone on the piano too, I am shopping around for one of those myself
Thanks to share!!!!
bro jus play the song
What are you playing it through, any effects, what amp ? :)
Juste straight into the back of a Zoom recorder, no effects or amp
@@JoshuaHyde amazing. I just got one too.
Please consider releasing this ! It’s so tight
this must be the later run of the CP80 because it has the parametric EQ like my CP60 does. I have a CP80 with the old knob style EQ and only one effects loop.
Love this!! I had a Yamaha CP-30 back in the 1980's, but always liked the Yamaha electric grand sound so much better. Was a big fan of the electric grand piano that Leon Russell played on the road in the 80's, I believe it was a Yamaha CP-70, but I could be wrong. I saw him live once in the mid 80's, at a small saloon, and he was playing the electric grand. He could make that thing sing!
question i came to this vid as it’s most recent but first what reed thickness do you use on your alto sax and two for vibrato what tips would you give to get it like yours and maybe what pronunciation do you use when doing it, thanks!
hello, I use size 3 Vandoren classic reeds. Vibrato you can imagine saying vavavavavava, opening and closing the jaw a tiny bit
Great job!!!
Thanks! Great!!!!!.
Great!!!!!!
What an amazing piece … and great performance! ❤

Thank you! As a composer I find this really useful.
Thank you so much for these videos on saxophone technique! They are really _excellent_ and exactly what I'm looking for as a composer planning to write for the instrument. Everything is explained so well and I love how you combine verbal explanations with sounding examples and notated examples for maximum clarity. I particularly like your in depth explanations of extended techniques.
Glad it's useful! Looking forward to hearing your new piece for saxophone!
You didn't want to fix the audio on this. I could barely hear any of the things he said

Thank you so much for this video! I know I am late but this was very in depth and fascinating information! (:
I watched your videos and decided to write a new piece for saxophone quartet! :-)
Great video series! I am learning a lot from these wonderful tutorials. May I ask one quick question (writing for a sax-quartet right now): is it possible to make a (small) glissando (rather a bending) from the highest possible note of (any) saxophone? And if so how big the gliss. could be? Greetings, Amir Teymuri
There are always special fingerings to be found, but depending on the players, yes it is possible to to a small gliss. It is easier to gliss in the higher register, so how far is up to you and the players - it's best to test it out with them.
It's actually interesting thing. I remember that lots of Saxophonist from Mezzoforte sometimes playing Sax Solo but also have a tone of Trumpet. Very cool and unique to me.
Hi Joshua, thank you so much for your great videos! I wonder if you could talk about the relation between embouchure and voicing, and how embouchure plays a role in saxophone playing? Thanks!
Hello, these two things often get a bit confused - sometimes we talk about embouchure because what is happening inside is abstract and impossible to see. In reality the embouchure is just a seal, we do see changes in the embouchure, but they are often just reflections of what is happening inside. As a composer it's best to just leave the embouchure to the musicians!
Dear joshua, I wanted to know is it possible to begin the note with open slap and then hold it through ?
Normal slap, yes - Open slap, no. The mouth is open at the end of an open slap so the note cannot continue.
First of all, I should thank you a lot for this series of videos, they've been really helpful for me. I just wanted to ask is it possible to use circular breathing and fluttertongue simultaneously? And also which other techniques can be used with the circular breathing at the same time ?
Thanks for your comment, circular breathing while flutter tonguing is probably quite difficult, as are most techniques that require the tongue to control the sound (split tones, multiphonics etc.) and should be avoided. It is possible to articulate while circular breathing but it is extremely difficult.
It’s Italian :). Whispering
what
Yes
Thank you for your helpful videos. Can teeth on reed gradually changes to something like split tones? And in teeth on reed, the sound have to move up or down? Or cant it be constant?
Hello, the sound can be constant - it doesn't have to move up or down. It cannot go smoothly to another technique (normal sound, split tone etc) because this requires removing the teeth from the reed and reforming the embouchure. There will always be a gap.
Great videos! But why is the audio always so quiet? I can barely hear what you are saying and closed captioning is not available...
Nothing sound like a Rhodes !!
yeah it sounds better
Thank you so much☺
Thanks! Great demonstration. I like the details.
GREAT !!! More music with more CP-80 please
Muito bom grande maestro Joshua.
Amazingly helpful, thank you so so much! we composers really value this videos😊
Glad to help!
I think it would be super cool if you would also include the notation of these techniques in your videos :)
There are some examples at 00:58
@@JoshuaHyde thank you didn't see it :)
Love it. The original has that special magic which most samples just don't get right.
beatifuly played!
