I often bite off more than I can chew, and sometimes I get it right the first time. I'm am no more than any other back yard, back shed, in the garage enthusiast who has been fortunate enough to collect the equipment that makes life easier to do the jobs I tackle here.

How I Lowered the rear end of my OBS Silverado
After lowering the front end by 6 inches (150mm) I have attempted to pull 8 inches (200 mm) out of the rear by doing what is called an axle flip along with 2" drop shackles.
I need to thank my kids and their mates for helping me get the tub off the back of this this so I could do all of this work.
I also had a whole bunch of stuff to cut out done buy previous owners which certainly added a whole bunch of time to the job.
Suffice to say the truck is sitting really low and looks AMAZING!!!! (although still at a legal height) but I am now faced with the challenge of almost no suspension travel.
I am currently doing some research including talking with real certified engineers and working on a solution other than raising it again.
If I can get it work I could probably pull even more out of it as I am still well above the minimum of 4" (100mm of clearance)
Let me know if you have any ideas in the comments or if you have any questions, and as always, I really appreciate those who have and continue to follow my channel.

How I Lowered the Front End on my OBS Chevy Truck
มุมมอง 2482 ปีที่แล้ว
After spending the last few months focusing on my Patrol and taking care of an EPA issue with my Commodore I have finally got back to working on my Chevy Silverado 6.5 liter diesel crew cab dually. This episode I completely rebuild the front end either replacing old worn parts for new ones or restoring the bits I was going to reuse. It was a bit of a long drawn out process with lots of cleaning...
I Copped an EPA Notice on my SSV VE Commodore
มุมมอง 7922 ปีที่แล้ว
I have owned this car for years and one Saturday night I was spotted by a couple of cops who didn't even have the decency to talk to me, they just sent the paperwork off to the EPA and I just had to deal with it. I succeeded in getting the car to the legal level. It's ridiculous how quiet cars need to be these days and the inconsistencies. Every car built after 2005 has its own legal noise leve...
How to Replace a TD42 Head Gasket
มุมมอง 5K2 ปีที่แล้ว
After replacing the injector pump on the TD42 and putting a lift kit in the GU I thought it would be a good idea to replace the head gasket just to eliminate it as a source of over heating. It is an arduous job that took a fair bit of time as my machinist held onto the head for a number of weeks. What you are seeing in some 15 - 16 minutes was drawn out over the course of a month. Anyway... I s...

How to Replace and Time a Nissan TD42 Injector Pump - May also work for some Toyotas
มุมมอง 20K2 ปีที่แล้ว
For the last 2 years I have struggled with the tuning on my GU Patrol after swapping out the ZD30 engine for a TD42 and purchasing an 11mm injector pump on the cheap. Every time I tried to set the timing I just seemed to make it worse, it would blow smoke and run hot with EGT's getting too high too quick. I finally stumped up the money for a UFI 11mm pump from Patrol a Part www.patrolapart.com....
How to Pull the Front End off an OBS Chevy

A few months ago I bought a '94 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab Dually with a 6.5 turbo diesel and have been ripping it apart in order to make it into a solid, reliable truck. This episode I get all of the suspension and steering out of it so I can get to the rails, clean them up and put a bunch of new parts into it to make sure that it steers and stops reliably. As they say in the classics, it has to...
How to Remove an OBS Chevy Wiring Loom in 1 Piece
มุมมอง 2.4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Even though it seems like a huge task, if you just work methodically and don't rush it, you should be able to remove the wiring loom from any vehicle as one assembly. You are definitely going to make your life easier if you label everything as you go. A roll of tape and a sharpie is a cheap investment and well worth the time. Where most people go wrong is that they rush which leads to broken cl...

How to Spend Time Working on Your Chevy Silverado Project, and having nothing to show for it

I have now been working on this truck (on and off...it's not a full time job) for a bit over 8 weeks. I cirtainly hope you have enjoyed seeing what I have done so far and it is useful to anyone working on their OBS Chevy or GMC truck. How to Disassemble a Chevy 6.5 Turbo Diesel (Part 2)

I finally get down to a bare block. After spending a number of days toiling away with getting the front of the truck off and engine out it's ready for machining work and finalizing my plan of attack. How to Remove and Disassemble a Chevy 6.5 Turbo Diesel (Part 1)

I have been taking my time with the tear down of my Chevy Silverado's 6.5 turbo diesel engine being as methodical and systematic as I can. This is very unlike me but I have to commit to the process or I will never get this thing back together and a Crew Cab Dually without a running engine takes the term paper weight to a new level. Chevy Silverado 6.5 Diesel Crew Cab Dually - The Journey Begins
มุมมอง 4323 ปีที่แล้ว
I few weeks ago I bought a 2wd diesel Chev C3500 Crew cab. Very unusual vehicle round these parts as they were never offered by GM in Australia. It's a '94 model that has been on our roads since '96, has done over 270,000 k's (nearly 170K miles) and is in need of some love, so I am starting with the engine...no point in doing anything else if I can't get it running right? Making HUGE Torque from the TD42- GU Patrol Engine Swap (Part 8)
Very good video Mate! I now want to watch the reassembly video bringing up TDC and installing the new chain and gears.
Thumbs up for working so hard but I have never worked on a diesel. I'm just trying to change the turbo. Cool video but not for a beginner.
Where did you get you engine from I'm chasing 1 but a ly7
Is there a filter ( gauze one ) around the bolt where the fuel line connects to pump that comes from the fuel filter. Cheers.
G'day M8 Not on my truck there wasn't. This engine came out f a GQ so I'm not sure if GQ and GU were the same. Thanks for watching my video. Cheers HARRY
Why is it that no one else has this stupid little pick up sump pump thing at the bottom preventing any sort of tool getting at that bottom nut? Do I really have to pull the motor strip it down to nothing or would it be better to bin the car in a big bomb fire?
Hi M8, Really sorry, not sure what you mean? Playing with the timing is a bit of mucking around, but as I have shown in the video, it is doable. Got a photo of what you are talking about? I'll try to be as helpful as possible. Cheers HARRY
Have same problem what did you end up doing
@@LachieCooper-d7iyou have to pull the vac pump out to get to the bottom bolt. Once thats out easy as piss.
@@rileyhodson8719 yep. The little gear on it is plastic so be careful you don't damage that or you could end up with a broken motor
@@HarrysBigShed great explanations,, just like you take pauses and explain it it well, it reflects from your comments also 😍😍😍 thanks
Hey, I notice after you put the new suspension in and lowered the car...its still sagging at the front end. Is that why people do like 2inch rear and 3inch front suspension?
rear should be bit higher on any,,truck,,to carry the weight.. japs should of copied ford f100 4x4 suspension.. 2ft travel std.. pinion, diff angle, is only rubber degreed 'c' bushings. cheap.. plus, the radius rods dont need touching. for 2'' , just re drill the coil buckets.. raised a bronco, solid front diff sas, 6''. std parts.. plus,,you dont have those bs cv joint crap..
I think it is just the load rating on the rear springs. I bought the highest rated ones as I was putting a lot of weight on the back, draw system, twin wheel carrier etc... I have to do a bunch of other work to the truck now, but once that is sorted I think I will replace the rear springs for softer ones. Sorry about taking so long to get back to you and thank you for watching my videos. Cheers HARRY
hows the td42 going now?
Happy New Year Lincoln I'm going to be replacing the injectors soon as at least one seems to be leaking down over night and then I will send it off for tuning. It runs hot under load and I suspect that it is getting too much boost. I will post up a video when it is done. Thanks for watching

Are the lifters located under the cylinder head? Or can they be removed with the cylinder head still on?
The lifters are in the block I think I have no idea how they come out especially with the head on. The Skid Factory channel has recently posted up a series on rebuilding a TD42 that’s pretty comprehensive. Thanks for watching
@@HarrysBigShed Thank you for the info.
What is the brand of the kit ?
I used the Ironman 4" Kit
ever looked at an f100 4x4 set up.. only mod needed is 'c' bushes, 2-7 degree, for pinion angle, no radius rods needed. coil buckets can be drilled 2'' higher, to raise 2''. with 2ft travel std, no need for coils.. the rear, just block it, cheap.. japs too fkn involved..like 3k involved..@@HarrysBigShed
the coils need,or should be,,from factory,, tied in top & bottom,,like real trucks,, ie,, f100.. learn..@@HarrysBigShed
1 thing needed to be upgraded,,is those plastic wheel studs..change them out for some 1/2'' or 9 1/6, u.s. ford truck studs.. they dont break.. plus, those trailing arms need to be a ft longer.. all round..with johnny joints,,not that bolt thru hole bs.. they dont twist.. mate with 80 series, ripped brkts off diff.. no twist.. unlike ford.. winner.. @@HarrysBigShed
why the fk,,do you need a spanner,,to turn the damn hubs.. thats 50,s tech.. @@HarrysBigShed
Did you ever do the video of putting it back together mate?
I'm pretty sure I put the head back on in this video. What did I miss?
You left the starter on and didnt remove the torque converter bolts...eer ..actually nuts (i believe ) to flywheel ,before you pulled it ? I didn't even know you could do that ? I changed all kinds of vehicle motors in cars and trucks ( hate front wheel drive cars ) stripped them down for years before i assembled one ..the whole vehicle , i was hired to take out every bolt , didnt have to put them back .. that was kind of fun .. then i went stupid and tried to figure out how to fix them and ruined that ..dont try putting it back together with thst torque converter bolted to the fly wheel , that wont work ..trust me ..
I hear you. This will definately be going back together much more slowly than it came apart. Cheers HARRY
There was no follow up video..... I got a VE Omega just sh*tting the bed. All sorts of strange stuff it was one I bought to sort and get going...... I'm thinking it's got clogged cats as well....... so I'll take em off and check but your next video was going to be about all the things you learned from that...
Hi Jamie, It was the cats, as soon as we got rid of the old ones, all the problems went away. At the moment Brutus is 400km away so I don't have access to the vehicle. Maybe when Zac gets home we can do an update video. Thanks for watching, and feel free to reach out if we can be of any further assistance. Cheers HARRY
damn what wrap/paint is that it looks awesome
Hi Ashley, I think it is from the Avery matt colour shift range. We bought the car with the wrap on it. Thanks for watching. Cheers HARRY
G’day Harry, Good to see another video on the C3500 … I was interested to see how the flip kit would work as I only did a 4“ drop (front spring eye relocators and extended rear shackles). I would like to go the flip kit route, so I’m interested to see how you tackle the suspension travel issue. BTW it’s “clairvoyant“ 😉 Cheers, Pete 🍻 P.S. Happy New Year 🍻🍻
G'day Peter, I am planning out my next step at the moment. I have recently moved shops and still have a hell of a mess to sort out and other cars to fix before getting back onto the Silverado, so it could be a while. Thank you for clarifying, now I never have an excuse for spelling clairvoyant incorrectly ever again. Wishing you and yours a happy, healthy and prosperous 2023.
Welcome back Harry, hope you had a Merry Christmas and we want more videos in 2023.
G'day Peter, And a Merry Christmas and all the best for you and yours throughout 2023. There will be more videos, once I have my new shop sorted out. Just getting out of the old one was a massive task and I am taking a few days of me time. Cheers HARRY
Theres actually a quick needle threader on that machine. I can see it. That little white lever at the side of the presser foot. Old vid so I'm sure you know by now.
Thanks Zannah, Yeh...it took me a while but I finally worked it out. Cheers HARRY
Drop boxes would have been easier
G'day Ben, Through the research that I had done before I started installing the lift, drop boxes would only provide benefits if I were going for a 6" lift in order to further correct the caster angle. Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoy more of my content. Cheers HARRY
Drop boxes are good for 3”-6” road runner or superior make them
maybe fit an f100 front diff.. they work, no mods needed.. plus,, no fkn cv bs.. the drop, or pumpkin, or diff centre, can be had left or right.. chev, ford dodge.. plus, a miriad of axle shaft lengths..brakes, lockers, ratios.. from 1960 , to 2034.. all interchangeable..
Harry, how is the yank tank going.
Hi Ian I have filmed me getting the rear suspension all wrong which will be the next episode, but with moving shops I haven’t been able to do anything else. Suffice to say, I think I am headed down a path a didn’t really anticipate going, but I will leave you guessing. In the meantime wishing you and your family a great Christmas and all the best for 2023. Cheers Harry
How much did the engine cost?
G’day m8, The engine itself was about $5500, which included new injectors. I then put on a new water pump, belt and hoses along with a few other bits and pieces. I could have bought a used engine instead of a rebuilt one, but for the sake of 500 bucks I got a zero timed motor with a warranty.
your vids are helping so much you're a legend
Thank you Bryce. It is great to hear from people like yourself. Cheers Harry
Why is the cross member different and does it bother lt into the same holes
G’day Peter, You need to change the cross member over as the one that came with the 3ltr puts the box where it needs to be with that engine and the 4.2 does the same with that unit. Basically I have swapped out a 3ltr cross member for a 4.2ltr cross member. Thanks for watching my videos, I hope you are finding them useful.
Yes but then the car is restricted so best to leave it standard or get varax mufflers for when need it quite
G’day Megamind, thanks for watching. There is more to improving performance through exhaust modifications than bi-modal mufflers. The car has a complete aftermarket set up from extractors to aftermarket cats, centre section and mufflers, so it can flow much better than a standard system, it’s not just about the noise, although I do love the rumble. Thanks for reaching out and I hope you continue to enjoy my content. Cheers Harry
Harry, were is the next parts of these - I'm struggling to find them on your channel thanks.
Hey m8 What parts do you mean? The car has been back in the road for months now. Thanks for watching
@@HarrysBigShed you talk about another video at 11:10 just after that one, if you ever made it. Yeah I know its an old video just interested in the content cheers.
Ahh…yeh…. Totally forgot about it. I should do one, shouldn’t I
@@HarrysBigShed ha, only when you get time. I know everyone's short of that at the moment. Great vids anyway mate genuinely had a good time watching some of these on the VE. We have been bashing the VZ 3.6's Adventra's around in the bush for along time almost 6 years now, the main vehicle while completed simpson desert and got back home appeared to have taken on some sand due to a broken inlet gasket under the intake so we just pulled it and are replacing it with a younger one, then we decide to do chains, pumps, check pickup cams etc so something small that only needed an oil change has diverted into a recondition almost. Just enjoy hearing what others have to say about the alloytec.
I know all about mission creep. If you have taken the engine out of the car now would be a good time to get a set of headers and aftermarket cats. They are almost impossible to do in the car…on a VE at least. The Simpson run must have been amazing. Planning on getting there but will use the Patrol. Have a good one
Nice to see it getting back together Harry 👏👏💪💪
Don't get too far ahead of yourself. It could be a case of 2 steps forward, 15 back. My regular viewers know this.
G‘day Harry, Great to see you back working on the Silverado … hopefully it will inspire me to get stuck into mine 😉 Cheers, Pete
G'day Pete, You just need to make a start. It won't matter where you start, it just matters that you do. Cheers HARRY
Mate, wonderful to see you back.
Thanks Ian
Too much crap in way of dash, colum guages are only good if your head is against the roof. Why put a GPS there in the way? Lift pump is a must, sort of boost figures as 13.5PSI for 900+ NM doesn't add up. TMIC's simply suck, move to a FMIC and see why.
G'day Ben, Anatomically I am what is known as a Big Bastard so when setting up the dash I probably have a different outlook to most. The gauges on the column certainly don't make it difficult for me, neither does the GPS as my head is literally scraping the roof. I have mentioned in numerous replies that I got a bit carried away and didn't read the charts correctly, but since posting this video I have fitted a new injector pump and as yet have not had it on a dyno. Please excuse my ignorance but the acronyms TMIC and FMIC are meaningless to me right now, of you could educate me it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for watching Cheers HARRY
Loved it!
Thank you
What was the rough costs involved, my td42 is down in conpression on 2 cylinders. How long did it take roughly ?
Hi Rod It cost about $400 to get the head machined and another $300 or so for the gasket kit and head bolts. Allow yourself about 1/2 a day to get it all apart and a full day to put it all back together once you get the head back from your machinist. Thanks for watching Cheers Harry
How do you find this pump? Looking at putting one on my GQ TD42 silver top with after market turbo and cross country top mount.
Hi Matthew I have been driving the Patrol for a couple of weeks now and I have been very happy with this pump. The mid range stumble I was experiencing with the other pump is gone and she’s making plenty of power and vroom vroom noises. I’m still yet to get it on a dyno but my backside tells me she goes real good. Best of luck with your project. Cheers Harry
@@HarrysBigShed hi mate eny smoke coming out from the exhaust when you give it some coz iam thinking if I need to do my injectors or pump I have black smoke when plant it in 2 and third and when cold it miss on lil revs nice content mate 👍🍻
Hi Harry, Who did you do the engine swap with? I have to remove VE engine . It's all sludged up inside , the likes of which I've never seen. The car looks great, but I think the previous owner never did an oil change. I didn't know about the sludge till after buying it from Pickles 4 years ago.I'm a carpenter / not a mechanic. Hindsight says I should have asked a mechanic to listen to the engine, prior auction.Pickles should have had in in ' salvage' auction. How they could put it in normal auction , I don't know . It's close to fraudulent practice. I should have gone to the Ombudsmen. Thx.
Hi Glenn, Unfortunately with auctions it is often “caveat emptor” ( buyer beware) I got the changeover engine from Northvic Engines in Braeside. For what people were asking for a used engine with up to 180,000k’s I spent a few more dollars and bought a freshly rebuilt unit. It also included a fresh set of injectors and brand new timing chain so I shouldn’t have to worry about it for 160,000k’s. So if you think about it by time you buy a used engine of unknown quality, put a new set of gaskets, injectors, timing chain, water pump, engine mounts, etc…etc… it was just cheaper and easier to do it this way. The car is now in 5000k service intervals and hasn’t missed a beat with the young lad commuting from Melbourne to Ballarat on a weekly basis. Best of luck with your project. Cheers Harry
My type of guy. I bought one of these to make some clears for my boat ( quoted $ 6000 ) I own a workshop like yours. Got through the easy part with ease with this great machine. In the end I asked my seamstress sister for help, whilst I replaced the clutch and timing belt on her Toyota she glided through the hard bits. We both saved a bomb. I donated my new machine to my niece and are all living happily (for the moment) Great vid , thank you . By the way, use the automatic needle threader next time. ENJOY,!
Thanks for that Joseph. Really appreciate the feedback. Cheers HARRY
Hi mate what water temperature sensor you use do you have a part number I looked them up and Nissan saying thay all same part number from zd30 to td42 if you can help that will be good thanks
Hi m8 Apologies for the delay. If memory serves the ZD30 and TD42 use the same temp sensor so totally interchangeable. I don’t have a part number, I just ordered a new one off eBay. Thanks for watching the videos and reaching out. Cheers Harry

Thanks for the video! Not many TH-cam videos covering this topic! Earned a sub for that! Don't want to send the old pump to Adelaide do you? 😂😂

G‘day Harry, Again, good work on disassembling the front end of the Dually. My only comment would be to use a lump hammer instead of a ball pein hammer to knock apart taper-fitted joints - a heavier hammer would have made it easier/quicker 😉 Cheers, Pete

Harry, I admire your perseverance, would it have been viable to buy a factory wiring harness or is the truck to old to have a harness in stock.
G’day Ian Being a diesel there are no aftermarket harnesses out there and it’s too old for GM to support. They haven’t made these engines for 20 years now. My only option would be to buy second hand and then there are no guarantees that it would be any better than what I already have. Anyway…it’s all been pushed back due to delays with getting other parts so I am taking my time cleaning up the front of the chassis and will have to get back into the Patrol. It desperately needs a new injection pump and I’ll probably rip the head off just to make sure the head gasket and a new set of bolts will stand up to the 20+ psi I plan on pushing through it. On top of that I have a complete suspension lift kit to install in it and get some bigger rubber underneath her. Cirtainly not short of a project. As always…thanks so much for watching me bumble my way through and hopefully I’ll get the old girl running in this lifetime. Cheers Harry
Sorry, should have asked, would it be viable to look at buying a genuine factory wire harness.
Harry, I have watched all of your posts, I admire your perseverance. Keep up the good work.
