Old video but we tossed it up. Trollfens from Desecent. Check out what you get inside!
well congratulations for proposal marriage
Where were all these beautiful roleplayers when I was gaming?
All those came in the first edition game or it's expansions.
Gherrinn is new though.
If you like mini's try to get a first edition that's cheap.
I think that Peterson Games did a great sculpt of all the Old Ones, Elder Ones, etc. But I really don't dig the design of the cthulhu figure. I find his design on the more basic Cthulhu look. You know giant Octopus Head with a humanoid body along with giant dragon wings. Pretty basic. But I do admit that the wings are pretty cool. I love how it doesn't look like you typical boring wings and over all just looks reallt dope. I find that Petersons second Cthulhu Mythos board game, Cthulhu: Death May Die, have a much better Cthulhu model. It was great to me because of how realistic it look. Cthulhu Wars made Cthulhu this big muscular monster, but Death May Die made him look a bit fat which is what I am expecting from elder one whi slept at the bottom of the ocean for like 10,000 years. And I am pretty such doinf jogs and sit ups are in his daily routine. Great video guys. Keep the good work.
Never mind once you showed the book it is the same one I got. but if you want to see what I asked before I watch the video you can check the rest of this message. You can read ahead after this. So I have the player's handbook and that's it with some dice this is to build my characters, what other book do I need? and anyone live in Connecticut that plays the game I live in that state I think this is the Buckeye guy I'm just getting into it and I got the D&D players handbook. It has a bearded guy with red eyes and a skull helmet on he's a giant and he's fighting two people looks like a sorcerer and either a rogue or a fighter it's mostly red period on the top it just says in red D&D and then and white players handbook. Is this the book you're talking about is this fifth edition?
I love Nyarlathotep and all, but jeez the Cthulhu figure looks beautiful.
Lä lä cthulhu fthagn
Oh god that book is freaking gorgeous
Wow, I am buying EVERYTHING.
great review, girls :) Although I think it is an unfair comparison. If we restrict ONLY to the content of these boxes, the Pathfinder one is waaaaay better.
I wonder the situation when authors stuff becomes popular after their death, would lovecraft approve of the look of these monsters, do they actually represent what he had in his head when he described them.
I'm pretty sure he wouldn't approve of his views of cosmic dread and his own attempts to process the fact that mankind might, in fact, be cosmically insignificant and totally blind to a larger reality being turned into a board game or any number of other harmless entertainment. I'm not saying any of this is bad, I like Cthulhu Wars (and a lot of other Cthulhu-derived stuff), it's just that something like this is so far removed from Lovecraft's intentions and reasons for writing what he wrote. It's just completely antithetical to the original intention, but at the same time his works are evocative and inspire people who might not have the exact same views as him, so it's only natural people use his materials in ways that suit them. Still, the questions and issues that made him feverishly write were serious and driving, to him. It being reduced to what's basically a "scary monsters attack! Cool minis!" would likely not have, shall we say, jived well with him. Kinda like with Conan (which is a good example of this), which was RE Howard's way of conveying and processing his disappointments and disillusionment with modern civilization. He was very frustrated with it and saw it as a filthy, decadent thing, a mistake and a perversion of man's natural state as a free, unfettered creature. Civilization, to him, was abhorrent and twisted good men into dishonesty. And so he wrote of how things should have been, of barbarians and strong men refusing to be weighted down by those unnatural fetters, acting with honesty and strength. He genuinely believed in the pureness of what he wrote, and that it was the proper thing. Imagine all that dissatisfaction and angriness, that frustration and yearning for something more genuine. And now imagine that in the years to come, most people would look at it and their takeaway would be "Big muscly man beats up stuff, cool!" and produce works that completely disregarded his original intentions, neutered the character and basically made his work into a cheap spectacle. Nothing of that would be *wrong* to do, from a general standpoint, but doing something like it is so far from the author's original intention, and so far from his mindset, as well as the mindset of the time of the original works, that it'd be totally incompatible with them. (Sorry, this was a bit of a rant. Point being, Lovecraft probably wouldn't approve turning his delvings into unknown and unknowable dread into plastic sculptures intended for play and enjoyment.)
Goblin Rat And they wrote each other a lot of times... I'm now forgivin the third writer they wrote at their times... ah yep he was Sherlock Holmes writer.(sorry I'm not interested in yellow books....) ...next game will be probably Cimmerians vs. Chtuloids vs Robert Downey J. ....
read the gamemasters guide first ladies there's 2 pre made adventures: black fang's lair and the return of black fang. Then they have 12 random encounters and finally 10 adventure ideas for you to flesh out and make your own using the monsters in the box. Way more content in the beginners box then the starter kit. Otherwise enjoyed the review thumbs up.
Kinda tough to compare these two as pathfinder was based on the 3rd version of D&D and 5th edition D&D is a completely different creature. Oh and you can get the D&D starter set off of amazon for really cheap.
girl u fine
Thank you so much for the review! One note... the smaller Skullport boards will actually fit right on top of the removable tray and make a perfect little lid for it. We made notches just their size. Try it out! :)
MY FAVORITE IS CTHULHU!!!!!
I like turtles. I mean tentacles.
I was hoping they would include miniatures to paint and represent your party.
for the price of the box that is unrealistic. i find the box so cheap that if you want some mini's you can always buy them and act like they (the mini's and the price) were included in the box :P
Metallica..
this times 10
What did you think The Thing That Should Not Be was about?
Thanks for the close-up shots. Perfect, just what I needed. As for the two asswipes who downvoted you, screw them. It's not like you were the one who made these... you're just showing them to ones who might want to buy them.
What a gimmick these guys have going, no offense. 50 bucks a book, dam! I'm in the wrong business.
So this is a thing that we did. Yeah. 2 bucks down the drain :)
Great video, but those are the ugliest, most awful miniatures I have ever seen.
You go to Twenty Sided Store? I used to go there before I moved to Philadelphia. Love that place :)
Yeah its a bit of travel from where I live now but it's always worth the trip :)
I would want this just to paint the minis. The game play is too convoluted for me.
DadsGaming I don't like Cthulhu's pose.
DadsGaming It's not worth 200 bucks.
Best Cthulhu Wars unboxing video so far! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! We aim to please!
I miss Lockwood's art :-(
I miss Easley, Elmore, Brom, Noren, Nasmith... the great elders. Todd Lockwood was a great artist to D&D (his dragons and dwarves are the best). But nowadays art is ok.
damn, i want to try some rpging, but none of my friends play and no, i'm not gonna play by myself, that's lame
Do you have any local game or comic shops? D&D has a sponsored gaming night on Wednesdays, you can possibly look into that to get some time in for RPGing.
play online, google hangouts.
I would say the D&D box set is way better for two reasons. For one it's cheaper, obviously. But the big reason is that if you wind up buying the PF game, everything in the PF box set is useless except for the dice and pawns. The D&D box set includes a full adventure module, which is still useful even after you buy the game. :] An extra 15 bucks for some popouts and cheap plastic standies just doesn't seem worth it as the only other reusable content.
personally, I am thinking of playing a Investigator Archetype Empiricist, Were the Investigator is basically Sherlock Holmes on speed Empiricist make it just a bit more Sherlocky for me. Investigators are classified as rouge alchemist but they are really week alchemist and week rouges with only less sneak attack and the down side of only being about to use it once/enemy/day. Meaning they will not use it as much as rouges. Were they shine though is they get accesses to nearly every skill (exception are Fly, Handle Animal, Swim, and Ride.) I'm not sure why they don't have Swim as it is a Rouge skill. They also get access to all Alchemist and Rouge talents as well as a list of a bunch of great new Investigator talents. They can also use and make poisons effectively. They get trap finding and sensing like Rouges. In they get what is called inspiration. Inspiration is what will make investigators better then any other class at both skills, saves and attacks. It allows them to add a d6 to there d20 a number of times each day equal to 1/2 there level + there int mode. On top of that they can add half there level to any attacks that they study first. Studying is also only a move action and you can only do it once/enemy/day, but that is the attack you get to add to your sneak attack (called Studied strike) to. On top of that if you miss the first time you try to hit you can try again with the same advantage up to you int mod number of rounds. While the investigator do have weak alchemist and rouge abilities what really makes them shine is the extra flavor they gave them. It makes them completely different then Alchemist and Rouges. I wouldn't say they are necessarily more powerful or unbalanced though. both Alchemist and Rouges have accesses to things that are less assessable to investigators. The investigator has to make a more choices rather to take alchemist, rouge or even investigator talents ever other round after 3rd. Meaning each Investigator is likely to look very different. But basically less rouge like then a normal rouge and less alchemist like then the traditional alchemist and much more knowledge and skill based then either of the other two.
my one concern is how is says Pathfinder Adventure Path on the front, thats one of my only concerns
9:19 "If anyone says they are ripping off Pathfinder" That is HILARIOUS because you know Pathfinder did not rip off anyone else's idea, making their game...3.5 *Cough *Cough
bloodrager sounds pretty brutal, a barbarian with ability to blindly cast spells while punching enemy to death Awesome!!
go 5e, pathfinder has awesome content now, 5e has more simple math and a focus on roleplaying vs combat.
Both boxes on the shelf at the local game store. What's in each box? The less expensive box shorts you a D%, no figures, no map, but you get a really nice cardboard filler so the D&D Starter Set can appear comparable to the Pathfinder Beginner Box. Classy!
I'd definitely like to see a second review after testing out both starter sets in action. Thanks for the vid!
agreed. I think both are great for the prices. I think D&D is a much more fun game but Pathfinder has great story lines. But lately D&D has some great story lines too now. The story in the D&D starter set is a introductory to the game for new players.
How can people NOT like this video? Cute girls reviewing starter sets. HOW DARE YOU!!!!
Review this!
Which classes have you tried out so far? you get 10 points for playing 2 or more of them!
I'm thinking of going for the Investigator. I do like the alchemy class (even though I have yet to play one) so I think it's my hybrid of choice. -D
Have you tried the heroes yet?
Looks really cool. My one concern (since I haven't read it yet) is that these new classes seem like they could be a lot more powerful than the core classes, which would then make the core classes obsolete. Are the new ones balanced enough where they won't outshine the core classes?
Video looks great Dan.
Book looks real good.I am definitely picking it up when I can.
Thanks Dan, I've embedded it at insightgames.uk/DD-Players-Handbook
Thanks Dan - would it be okay to link to this review on our site at Insightgames.uk ?
Absolutely!
By all means, I would be honored! We also have a video up showing the D&D 5e mini starter set if you are interested.
D&D 5e is significantly streamlined, and easy to play without being dumbed down. Pathfinder is 3.5e with some rules improvements, but it is still a bloated game, especially at high level play. You should also mention that the pathfinder starter set is about $15 MORE than the D&D starter set. While I would agree that a nice wall poster or something should have been included, the included adventure: the Mines of Phandelver is simply outstanding. Use the pregen characters, go over the module and get real familiar with the first two parts and you can start running almost right away.
I can see your points. This was just more of a showing as to what you get in the starter sets for first time rpg group start ups though. Also I am curious as to how D&D 5e will play at higher levels compared to Pathfinder. When it comes to the complete game I feel like pathfinder is more diverse from level 1 and d&d is after level 3 (like 2 level 1 fighters are incredibly similar in d&d but in PF can but different gear, different feats, etc etc)
I see what you mean, but not exactly true. Customization for a 5e character is not correlated to class like Pathfinder, but with your character's background. You background will give you proficiency in two skills of your character's choosing. In addition, it is only 900 experience points to go from 1st to 3rd level in 5e. This allows for the player to experience that low level play, but after about two sessions they are at level 2, and after another two or three they are at level three and then progression slows down. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the 'fat' so to speak has been trimmed from high level play with the new system. I did do a really in depth review of the PHB on my own channel, please.... check it out!
Looks cool but I was expecting more indoor tiles... The Wraiths might be the coolest thing about it.
For non-painted, prefab minis... I have to say that I'm fairly unimpressed. Hopefully Wizards and/or Wizkids will do better quality control on the next batches.
Thanks! This was helpful because the Amazon product listing shows the wrong picture.
half look decent enough. Why Drizzt and the thief does look terrible lol.
I've run the D&D 5e starter game, quite hard, my party on the first encounter with the goblin cave, was a total TPK! I've also GMed PF (not the starter box, the full game) and it's so full of bloat, it always ends up in a rules fight so I stopped bothering. The new 5e D&D seems to be better streamlined, hope they keep it that way.
