An Old Guys Guide To Shifting Like A Pro.....Well Almost
#cb125 #honda #cb125f
Its all about preloading the gears. What the hell does that mean?
I took to TH-cam to find out what I could do to improve my shifting technique and stumbled across @BikerElfSquirrel channel talking about preloading.
So it was a lovely evening tonight so I thought I would take a ride and try it out for myself.

Sunny Evening Motor Bike Pootle Up The South Wales Valleys
มุมมอง 206ปีที่แล้ว
#honda #cb125f #southwales The weather has been amazing the past few days and with a chance to get out one evening, I decided to take the Honda CB125F for a little trip up the South Wales Valleys. Just me chatting away with some scenery of South Wales. Still loving the bike, still making mistakes but loving every minute of it.

#honda #CB125 #cb125f The first Motovlog of my new channel. We all have to start somewhere! At 58 years old I'd never ridden a motorbike but always wanted to. So I took the plunge and signed up for my CBT and theory test and promptly bought my first ever motorbike, a Honda CB125F. This channel is going to be detailing my exploits and progress as I work up to taking my DAS and beyond. Completely...

    You're not old mate. I'm old ! - I am 77 yo and just bought my Honda CB 125 F Haven't ridden a motorcycle for at least 40 years. The CB 125 F is such a forgiving bike ! So easy to brush up my riding techneque, I'm getting there, slowly...... Greetings mate from Melbourne, in the big brown bastard country down under. 😅 PS - I have found it's easier (for me) to do U turns - from stationary - in 2nd gear - less 'snappy' less feathering on the clutch. very little throttle required. I also ride bicycles. Good for leg muscles, the Honda - good for my brain 'muscle'

    Ear plugs definitely yes. Snood definitely yes, especially in winter or when you start going faster. Top box someone else mentioned which is great but really catches the wind on smaller bikes and acts like a rudder so watch out for that. Honestly you will want a new bike after your DAS training. Going back to a 125 after riding a 500cc plus machine....well you'll see for yourself. I ride year round and clothing aside, hands down winners are handlebar wind shields and heated grips. You can wrap up the rest of your body but your hands will always get cold. Like you I came to biking later in life (45 in my case) and now 57 and have 2 bikes cover about 20,000 miles per year between them. The addiction is powerful.

    I passed my CBT here in Ireland end of August, still don't have a bike lol. but had my eye on the CB125F, Or an old Rebel 250 for the extra power but they're hard to find in decent shame here. People at the CBT ( IBT ) were advising me to go for much faster bikes, I don't think it's a good idea lol. I think Honda are missing in lower seating bikes, they have the Rebel but that's it. Bikes like the Royal Enfield 350. The CB range of bikes apart from the CB125F are very expensive, a CB300R is 7,100 Euro's in Ireland. Honda have nothing else in the 250-300 range of cheaper bikes. . The Rebel 500 is 8400 - 8900 Euro's. Also, higher powered 125s are missing too.

    C’mon, get the heavy off-road tyres on that bike for the winter! When we lived in N. Yorks the head-teachers had farming families up high in the dales that would phone in and say “It’s snowing here” so they knew it was time to get the transport arranged and take the kids home before it became impossible. Love your bimbles and your commentaries. Pity about Mr Dafty on his sports bike being a mean ace and a damned pain, but you stay safe. Regards, Les

    Hearing protection… as I have hearing loss somewhere between “serious” and “profound” I can say with certainty you can only lose your hearing once. On any bike you should protect your hearing. Always. Cheap and easy to do, so do it. It was a hot early September and I was really glad for my Knox ‘shirt’ which has plenty of protection (back, shoulders, elbows) but allows good air flow. Not cheap but I wear it under more weather-proof gear if necessary. RAM mounts are pricy for what they are but having got one with a sat-nav, I could see how good they are and now use them for sat-nav, mirror-mounts, to hold my iPad on a stand, to hang my amateur radio gear from shelves in the house and on various outdoor fixtures. They would be great as camera mounts - use U-bolts (see the RAM catalogue) on the handlebar if you don’t want to drill holes in bodywork. For the record, I passed my bike test in the 1960s, but got back on a bike 5 years ago. Loving it. I wish I hadn’t sold my cheap Chinese 125 ‘starter bike’ though… I now have a 225cc Yamaha trail bike and am modifying a Honda Innova 125, and I’m 77 y.o. Wish you well with the channel. If you get into N. Wales I might see you around!! Les

    I find rev matching by blipping the throttle on downshifts makes for much smoother riding and less wear on chain and sprockets etc. You can use two finger braking and roll your wrist to blip or use the rear brake while blipping or better still a bit of both 👍 Hope this helps.

  • @davidross1436

    A bottle of ACF 50 and spray bottle will keep your bike looking great when applied regularly. An Optimate charger will also make sure it starts after lengthy spells when the weathers dire. I use both the above.🙂

    What a brilliant first motovlog. Your sound and visuals are spot on. I’ve been doing it for a few years and can’t get my sound that clear. Your riding looks good as far as I can tell. Clutch control etc will become natural in time. Just pretend you are invisible and assume that at every junction someone is going to cross your path. All the best 👍🏼

  • @loftysaltmarsh69
    @loftysaltmarsh69 ปีที่แล้ว

    Best tip I had when learning was , when stopping at a junction to turn right, have your bike turned slightly to the right. It makes setting off in that direction so much easier.

    When I was riding around Italy, there were times when I would scream inside my helmet because of the raw beauty of nature. No idea where I was. I'll never pass through there again. Comming along for the ride . 61 years old i did the moped then 175 then 250 back when you could ride a 250 on L plates, then gave up . But like you always been intrested in motorbikes. As an avid watcher of YT videos mostly small channels, my only advice is vlogging should always always be secondary. I see so many problems vlogging missing stop signs and close calls . That is my tip . Be safe and enjoy your biking.

    There could be inadvertent consequences to preloading. It might be worth checking out some of the animated videos on TH-cam,detailing how the clutch/gearbox actually works. If you're preloading going downhill and back off the throttle,even a little,everthing in the gearbox at some point will align and your slight pressure could be enough to clutchless shift. A technique racers use. Not a problem going up a gear,can be dangerous if you're preloading for a downshift. Momentarily locking the back wheel. And there's always the danger of increased wear on the leading edges of the gears. Great camera work and commentary. Wee question,what is that green light that seems to always be on?. Green light usually means neutral.

    • @TheMotovloggingJeweller
      @TheMotovloggingJeweller ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. Preloading up through the gears is fine and clutch less changes easy. I have never preloaded going down through the gears. On a bigger bike with stronger engine braking it could lead to things getting a bit squirmy.

    Get crash bars when get bigger bikes & always wear a jacket,boots,gloves. You did the right thing getting the 125cc they're great to build your confidence on before going bigger if you're never rode before test. Best to pull clutch all the way in for smoother shifts & less wear to cogs etc.

    Loved this, I have been thinking of taking my CBT now for about 6 months, at 55 I was thinking am I too old. Your post has helped make my mind up, its now or never. I have two older brothers who have held a bike license an owned bikes since they were 17 and a dad who owned a series of Nortons, Ariel’s, etc. driving a car has become so boring and every journey is irritating the hell out of me, like you I don’t want to race around I just want to travel with a little bit of excitement and thrill.
