Colin Hamilton: Zoom Tai Chi sequence
This is a short Tai Chi sequence that I developed during the UK lockdown for my students on Zoom. It allowed everybody to enjoy learning something new together, within the limited space available in our living rooms.

Eight Rolling Arm Drills of Wang XiangZhai
มุมมอง 1.3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
A simple introduction to the rolling arm methods of Wang XiangZhai. Wang XiangZhai was a famous Chinese martial arts master who was very skilled in the art of Xing Yi Quan and went on to develop his own martial art called Yi Quan. To the best of our knowledge, he was the first person to categorise these eight basic circles, although they are found in most Chinese martial arts in one form or ano...

GoPro Tai Chi: Closing Sequence
มุมมอง 2134 ปีที่แล้ว
This short video shows the final movements of the 24-step stationary form, which can be practiced on its own by repeating the section from Hawk Spreads Wings to Hawk Spreads Wings many times, continuously, with or without the footwork. It is therefore an excellent training exercise for developing your internal power and the "Tai Chi sense". For anyone unable to stand, all of the movements in my...
Inside-out Tai Chi Part 5: A Tai Chi Challenge
มุมมอง 744 ปีที่แล้ว
This short challenge was for any of my students who were new to this form and had been working through the previous videos in this "Inside-out Tai Chi" series. The answers are given in the second part of the video, but performed with the left hand. If you have been practicing with your left hand as well as your right hand, this exercise should be quite easy. There is no left handed White Crane ...
Inside-out Tai Chi Part 4: Fair Ladies
มุมมอง 804 ปีที่แล้ว
The movement Fair Ladies at Shuttles, explained one hand at a time, with an optional secret drilling technique as a finger strike prior to a push. Again, as with the rest of this little series of clips, originally offered to my students via our WhatsApp groups, this is a humble offering but it can have a profound effect on your experience and understanding of Tai Chi, if you practice it many ti...
Inside-out Tai Chi Part 3: Drilling
มุมมอง 884 ปีที่แล้ว
Legend has it that the once 'secret' technique of drilling was seen to be so dangerous that its teaching was banned to all but the most senior students. It is characteristic of our style of Tai Chi, appearing in several different movements such as Repulse Monkeys and Fair Ladies at Shuttles. Here it is shown as part of the movement Brush Knee and Push, where it can be considered to be a strike ...
Inside-out Tai Chi Part 2: The White Crane Spiral
มุมมอง 1184 ปีที่แล้ว
There is just one movement in this short video: the right arm spiral into The White Crane Spreads its Wings. Keep the arm comfortably extended without over-bending the elbow. Don’t make it look like a boy scout salute, keep the arm softly curved and your shoulder down. The end result is a smooth, continuous spiral, with no stopping and starting. Pay particular attention to what the waist is doi...
GoPro Tai Chi Some Individual Moves
มุมมอง 1224 ปีที่แล้ว
These are just a few of the key arm and waist movements of the 24-step form. Feet standing still. For anyone who followed the single-handed course, during lockdown, when all I had to film with was my phone, the GoPro has now allowed me to show you how both hands work together in these movements. The full version of the 24-step form, shown in a previous video, will now make more sense. Remember ...

    If you master these eight circles combined with having good internal juice you will develop the skill to close down most hand strikes. Add mastery of the five energy strikes and you can become a very dangerous person. Master was a genius of the Martial arts. Lots of complexity in this so called simplicity. Many thanks. 🙏

    When Rolling back the weight should sink deeply into the back leg not the back '' it's bad form taking the weight into the lower back '' there is no step up between the first 2 brush knees ever but after the raise the foot should return to the same place ' also ward off the back foot should turn to a 45 and SUNK preventing this intervention movement that looks really rigid '' just check Cheng min Cheng and you'll see that this is a practical factual correction '' try not to clump your feet so heavily on repulse monkey because its embarrassing if a real martial artist sees this '' and stop taking all that weight into your lower back it's going to give you problems with your hair later ' just check the golden mean for the connection of legs to heart and back to hair ' it's a rudimentary knowledge for beginners

    Repulse monkey should be light footed toe to heel not clumping down like heavy cement ' master Cheng min.ching emphasised this constantly to his students as heavy footed and easily pushed over

  • @david9180
    @david9180 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Apart from snake creeps down it's very poor incorrect form ' roll back for example if you watch master Cheng min.ching includes a definate sinking of the back leg with the push higher with hands together ' waving clouds the waist turns all the way so that the head and torso are completely turned and the kicks are way to high ' the second punch the whole body stretches forward and the last snake creeps down when the foot rises it should land lightly on a 45 not straight also the turn included a very important martial function with the left hand touching the appendix area the lotus kick is way to fast and high and the punches should be low not high ' it's very amateur thank the Lord this guy ain't teaching

      Can't wait to see your rendition! And by the way, what did you type the comments on? The spacing b/n words, the punctuation, the grammar, the spelling are all off! If you are going to rip someone in writing, please at least spell check and proof read first... It's hard to take someone seriously when he writes like a wanker.

    Hello,,, interesting. Where did you train? , trained back in the 1990s at a closed door school in NYC, I have seen some of this...some I haven't.

    • @yiheyuantaichi

      Hi Ian, Sorry for the slow response, I haven't looked at this email account for months. I started my Chinese Martial Arts journey in 1983 in the UK. Years later I visited China. In my many years of training, I have and still do train in Tai Ji Quan, Xing Yi Quan and Ba Gua Zhang and San Shou as well as submission grappling and western martial arts. I've only studied a little Yi Quan, but the eight circles are obvious to me, as they are found in most schools of CMA (if not all eight patterns). If you understand the eight basic circles that Wang XiangZhai wrote about and apply them appropriately, then you have a superior advantage against no Gi grapplers and the ability to close down lines of striking when applied with good internal martial arts principles. The video is a very basic introduction and there are other ways of practicing the eight circles. All the best.

    • @ianweir2115
      @ianweir2115 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yiheyuantaichi Thank you for your response. Do you know if I could use Wing Chun footwork with the 8 circles? I learned William Cheung Style Wing Chun/and western Boxing push stepping(wing chun and boxing fit well together) and the school closed before I could take the Sifu Exam. So I' am Sing I, or senior student. I also took Nihon Goshin Aikido in Queens NYC, in Flushing Queens Chinatown. Yi chuan ? I was shown the basics but I have many books/videos. I'am big fan of Bruce Lee / Wang Xiang Zhai/Morihei Ueshiba. If you have any books/videos or masters recommendations or ideas, would be eternally grateful, peace brother.

    • @yiheyuantaichi
      @yiheyuantaichi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ianweir2115 Hi Ian, Yes, there is no reason why you should not put differnt types of stepping into your training including Wing Chun style stepping (very up close and personal). For a martial artist to grow and develop they need to train beyond the basics of the training drills they practice. I've trained and sparred with loads of people over the years from many differnt syles and backgounds, and I can safely say with 100% confidence that we have all become better martial artists by being open to new ideas. Bruce Lee's philosophy for martial arts was spot on. Train and master all ranges and learn to flow naturally from range to range. Morihei Ueshiba, became a very philosophical/spiritual dude probably because of his experiences in WW II in the Chinese city of Nanjing. His little book 'The art of Peace' is a classic, and Wang XiangZhai was very skilled in XingYi Quan before going on to develop I Quan part of it's training is to become one with the Universe. Can't argue with that. Can't think of any books or people to recommend at the moment. If any come to mind I let you know. All the best. Peace.

    thank you Colin , there are so many variants on this classical form but I am recommending yours to my little group here in Bristol UK. Your form and accompanying descriptions are straightforward and you offer variants for particular movements to suit individual requirements. I am interested as to why you put 'rowing the boat' later in the sequence than most practitioners seem to? Tim Mason www.bodytomind.co.uk

      Hi Tim, Thanks for the feedback. No particular reason for switching some of the movement around, just listening to my body and doing what felt right on the day. Most of the time I would massage the lower back and kidney area last of all. Over many years and with different instructors I have been taught and practiced many variations of the "Eight brocade" so we decided to put a few variations. Cheers C

    Yes, it is important for beginners to learn to push hands very slowly in order to develop sensitivity, structure, balance, timing, sticking, following and many other basic skills before progressing to explore the qualities and dynamics of these interactions at a more realistic range of speeds in preparation for actual fighting, where responses need to be appropriate and spontaneous. As it says in the classics: "Meet slow with slow, fast with fast. My opponent moves a little; I move first."
