Onan 12.5JC Begins a new life as a home standby generator
We just had our RM1350 converted to a dual compressor 12v fridge by JC Refrigeration in Shipshewana, IN. The temperature in the refrigerator is set at 37 degrees and the freezer is set at 0 degrees. So far, it is working flawlessly. I had added 4 fans; two on the bottom vent pulling in air and two at the top vent to exhaust hot air when it was an absorption fridge. That seemed to help but we could never get the fridge down below 40 degrees nor keep ice cream in the freezer. This is a great conversion if your absorption cooling unit ever goes out and you are faced with replacing it.
I've heard good thing about the JC Refrigeration units. If I ever get to a place where mine isn't working well, I would consider it. I've also looked a 12v compressor fridge as a possible replacement. But for now (knock on wood) mine is running fine. freezer stays between zero and 4 degrees, fridge in the mid 30's. I guess I got lucky.
I should say that in a follow on video th-cam.com/video/FiSGzmDyl-E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ccSJTLZfIVWP0OYB I installed fans in the back - and they made all the difference.
@Seabee_Camper this is a dual compressor 12v. I will posting a short video about it on my TH-cam page as soon as my son can edit the video.
I have one that is gas powered, runs great. But I would love to get a dual fuel carburetor and have the option to run on either gas or propane. We are near the gulf coast and I think having that ability could be quite handy. It's there a direction you could point me in?
The dual fuel carbs are getting very hard to find. Onan doesn't have them in stock anymore. The last few years I've had to resort to buying whole generators that were non-functional for some reason or another and using it as a parts machine. On the rare occasions I see a JB or JC carb for sale they run $300-$400. The rest (solenoid, demand regulator) are off the shelf items still available. You can check out the video of a JC I set up for my house here: th-cam.com/video/9V4LbPXYILc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=TUfDhiEiThuC6xul
Very nice video sir, thank you.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
You are doing the propane correctly. You’re never supposed to have the switch over thing in the middle. There was a TH-cam video on that from an RV tech up in WA. Great info… thanks!
Thanks Rachael! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Loved the tips.
Thanks for watching ! Glad you likes it. I have a follow on video with 7 more Easy Mods: th-cam.com/video/Tfc21ywvlGE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=k3P7zzG3y_SEyK-u
Consider the fire blankets, too, especially for the kitchen
That's a great idea, thank you! I appreciate you watching and commenting on my video!
3 minutes in… I have a glove box holder for my wet bay on my list.. thought you were gonna talk about that but no the regulator. We have one, we put it on the faucet side- but I think after this I may move it! You’ve been camping longer than I have been alive. Looking forward to picking up more tips and checking out the rest of the channels.

Thanks, amigo!
What do you use to make sure stuff sticks to the counters? Walls?
Hi Doug! We use Museum Putty for horizontal surfaces, and 3M Command Strips for the walls.
Nice job. Can you show how to install a roof fan
Do you mean a max air fan or fan-tastic fan?
Where's the starter?
On the older Onans they used the generator as the starter. Nice, simple, reliable.
I am female with rear king bed. Problem is came off track roof leaks and I have no choice but to live in this junk. But between being clostrohibic I really need those extra feet. Any suggestions? I was going to pull out and lean on horses is that going to work. Any advise for instructions would be so appreciated . Best cheapest materials flex seal okay for roof? I must do all alone so this is first experience little with painting but not fixing. This and is it possible to eliminate altogether and just make a permanent? Thank you for any advice . Saw show and look honest and knowledgeable is appreciated 😊
Hi Kathleen! It's hard to give exact advice without knowing what kind of RV you have and what type of slide mechanism. If thee camper is not going to move again, you can wrestle out the slide all the way and support the end sticking out with jacks/wood saw horses etc. (I'm assuming a Schwintek slide system from the way you describe it) Then you could seal the slide seams with flex seal or eternabond tape. This isn't exactly a factory fix, but it will work for an RV that will be stationary. If you plan to move , this obviously would only be a temporary fix.
Thanks for your suggestions!
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it.
Great ideas! Museum Putty!!!
Thank you for your comment! I appreciate it and I'm glad you found something that caught your eye.
Just bought RV and new to the life learning a ton from these videos. Thanks

Csx is a loaded work train, other one is passenger train,
The CSX is a local Boston to Dover NH L073 The passenger train is Amtrak Downeaster 685.
Fan helped quite a bit. Much quicker cool down when we stopped for the evening and turned the fridge on. Achieved a lower temp overnight so we maintained a better delta while traveling during the day as the fridge is unpowered while traveling. I was able to get the controller inside next to the fridge and added the thermometers too. Thank you!
Glad to hear it helped! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Awesome, Thanks so much!!! I’m going to use some of your ideas on my 40’ boat based out of Miami Florida.

Good info just ordered the propane quick disconnect/splitter.

I'd recommend replacing any key locks with barrel locks. Keys bend or wear down and you spend time jiggling the keys to get them to work. Barrel locks are one way, the keys are sturdy and someone can't just force the lock with a screwdriver.
That's a good idea. Thanks for sharing it!
.....combined with about 10 smoke detectors and you should be good
I'm not sure I'd go all the way to ten, but I do think for short money you can make your camper much safer. 😄
So..what would the low pressure lp supply on the rv used for?..I have one on my camper
You can use them with a propane grill, but if it is a grill designed to have a 1 lb propane bottle connected directly to it, you must remove that regulator to get adequate propane flow. If you don't the grill won't get as hot as it should.
We have those same motion lights on our stairs at our house. They're great! I put touch lights in our camper pantry cabinet, but maybe I'll switch to the motion activated ones... we'll see. The one tip that you gave that I will definitely do is the fire extinguishers... One in the bedroom and one outside is a great idea. thank you!

The desk was such a good idea! What did you use to latch it up?
Lea, the hinges have a latch that holds them in the upright position, then there is a small button to push to release them so it folds back down. More info is here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08L9J72LH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 Thanks for watching!

Thanks so much for the great ideas. Love the glove holder. Question: Did u screw the holder in the wet bay. My wet bay is just like urs.
You're welcome! I did screw the glove holder into the wall of the wet bay. I first checked to make sure there was nothing behind that wall that could get punctured. The wall was plenty strong enough to hold the gloves and holder. Thanks for watching and commenting!

You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed it!
Our 1971 22ft Sheller-Globe Superior motor home had the predecessor model I believe with the round generator assembly, large rectangular control box. The flywheel side was open with a groove to wind a rope if needed for hand pull start. Wished we had removed it when the motor home was sold dirt cheap.
The CCKs did have round generator ends until the mid-1970s if I remember correctly. They are heavy beasts that will run nearly forever with basic maintenance. And if you had the chops, you could pull start them. Thanks for watching the video.
@@Seabee_Camper Flip the "manual start" toggle switch which activates the fuel pump and ignition and Pull! Definitely not for the faint of heart. If however the Generator's battery is dead, you don't have much choice.
@@DandyDon1 yup! The ones with pull start ability also usually had a mechanical fuel pump with a prime lever so you could get gas to the carb before you started pulling.
Love several of these ideas, especially museum putty
