This is a documentary about Tervalon's and Murray-Garcia's very important work, and discussions among their peers. Well done Health Education student project. More of a grass-roots perspective might have been interesting, but I understand that cultural humility is especially important for people working in the health sector.

Cultural humility is such an exciting concept, and requiring that social and legal institutions recognize that people know what they want and respond in such ways would significantly mitigate institutional retraumatization. I personally resonate with this as a survivor of domestic violence who has been greatly traumatized by the court system's lack of discretion in domestic violence situations involving an abuser who does not live in the same jurisdiction as the abused. The institution needs to become more flexible and responsive to the different experiences of survivors of violence, even when personal jurisdiction can not be established. I am watching this for my Master's in social work class at the University of Chicago.

What I dislike most, as it pertains to these ideals, is that certain groups want everyone else to be sensitive to their distinct needs& struggles. However, they are rarely, if ever, concerned about the various issues& hardships of others. If anyone dares calls them out on this glaring reality,, those persons run the risks of encountering serious attacks or harm.

This goes back to personal bias. In the world of service (medical, social work, teaching) one must drop biases when servicing the public. Great video, but we need to call a duck a duck instead of a goat.

Are we going to blind ourselves to the fact that this lady is pulling a Rachel Dolezal? Are are we supposed to blind ourselves to the fact that she is obviously white? Like she wants to be a victim so bad she is lying about her race. It also kind of argues against her point about institutional racism. Like let's assume she is actually black if America was so racist wouldn't she try and hide the fact that she is black not parade it around? Last time I checked during 60's and before African Americans used make-up to try and be pale to look white because there was actual institutional racism against African Americans. I doubt if you were in an actual oppressed group you would try and make a big deal about being in the "oppressed group" especially if you could pass as being part of the "oppressor group". Like this makes no sense. She is a white lady trying to be black because she wants the perks that come with being a supposed victim. Germans weren't saying they were Jews during the holocaust and whites weren't saying they were black during Jim Crow because during those times they were actually being put down by the system. Not today. That's why white people like her are lying about their racial heritage then they con dumb white people who pay them money to listen to them call them a racist for an hour also if the country was so racist I doubt people like Ibram X. Kendi could make millions calling people racist. While at the same time while they claim they are Anti-racist but they are saying and proposing almost all the same evil tripe the racists in the 60's and the past proposed. I love how judging people by their character is not good enough. You apparently have to look at skin color and then make a judgement and then you call it anti racist. lol academia is a joke. I'm gonna stick to what MLK said and judge people's character and not their skin. but idiots like these people will say I'm not an antiracist.

Lol,,,she's not white...I have family members & friends who "may" appear white, but have either both black parents, who are even dark skinned, or grandparents who are Black. It's rather intriguing... This is quite common inn Caribbean Islands, but there are a plethora of African Americans & other Black people in the U.S. who look just like her...Just do a little research, you'll be amazed. We come in all shades💜✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
