I was never aware of this channel until just now. At least I don't remember seeing it. Before I watch, these questions: 1. Are you willing to run in the outside lanes of a track? 2. Are you willing to run clockwise on a track? These may be answered by watching, which I very well may do.
One more: What shoe brands are worn in the content?
coke??!
Coca Cola…. :)
Nice video. Picked up some nice ideas. I love planning but probably spend far too much time overthinking it. Will you do any tune up races? And what would your weekly mileage roughly be.
Thanks for the comment! I appreciate it. I think we all spend too much time overthinking things! :) I’d love to do some tune up races but there aren’t many in Canada that time of year. Too much ice and snow! My weekly mileage is usually between 60 and 90 miles (90-150k). But I’m looking to push that up for a short while.
@global-runner impressive mileage. I'm looking to concentrate on a half this time next year. I have a marathon in spring so will see how the the higher mileage goes. All the best.
Will be great to semi-follow along. I will be entering the Nice HM on 27th April which is in 24 weeks, so a while a way but it will be deep winter where I live (French Alps) so training can be more difficult. Just done a Nice 20km in 1:58 but I am hoping for say 1:50 for HM but I have no idea what is a reasonable target. My Garmin currently says 2:01:25. Best of luck. PS Still don’t understand why you channel has only 4.3K subs.
@@3Unique semi-follow like semi-marathon? Ha! I like that!! :) Yes I live in Canada and so I understand the issue with training through the winter! It gets cold and snowy here which is not optimal. I’ll just do the best I can! Congrats on going sub 2! That’s a big target. And well done on outperforming your Garmin! I haven’t done that yet…. (Yet!). 1:48 in Nice I’m guessing - go for it! (Thanks for the comment on subs! We’re growing but please feel free to spread the word!). :)
30+kms long runs arent necessary, id lower it to 90mins but add more runs between 60min and 90mins, the double easy days are a good idea, if you double 2x a week like 70min AM and 40min PM with a 90min (max long run) you get 3 runs a week over 60mins, for half marathon i would use them all the way through, double thresholds are popular now but i find you are adding too much, id rather see you do a progression to hit 4x2km with 2min rc on the track for proper even splits (315/km or 39s 200m)... so you can have a chance to relax at 320-325 pace, the double threshold stuff during off season is alright, but not during a build up, 10 weeks is a good amount of time to prep, you have a good idea of what you are doing... also you are right, taper doesnt have to be as long you wont be running on fat fuel running a 70min race. Just my 2cents. Good luck
These are great comments! Thank you. I do like your suggestions and they make a lot of sense. I loves me a long run though so I may be pushing them a little :)
Great plan, keep it going!
Thank you!!!
Will you continue to strength train through this plan? Interested to know how you will schedule strength, particularly in the block with double days Tuesday and Thursday
Great question. I will. I try and take the “little and often” approach to it. So if I have a minute I’ll do a quick exercise (even if it’s only 20 push ups). It’s more manageable than setting a chunk of time aside.
I partially tore my calf 6 weeks ago and haven't run since then. Your videos got me excited to start running again! Gonna start w/ a little test run tomorrow AM :)
Be careful!!! Hope it goes well though. :)
Best of luck!!
Thank you!!!
I think you are already doing it but just keep up your core work. Great work.
This is a great reminder. It’s key!! Thanks!
I suppose by Double threshold you aim for low-threshhold? Working around threshhold is too hard, says our former legend runner Ingrid Kristiansen. She recommend 8-12 K sessions 3-4 beats below your threshold. That would slowly increase your threshold-pace!
I think I’m going to try and have different stimuli so I’ll probably do threshold but also slightly lower. Can’t argue with Ingrid. She’s an absolute legend!
I like this. Keep the speed work a priority and the longer stuff fits in. I’d race a 5k or track solo early January as a test. I wish you well.
I would love a 5k but I live in Canada and it will be too cold by then! Shame because it’s a great idea. Thanks for your comment!
Decent plan, very nice! In your miles period I think I would run the longruns at a steady pace with HR to the higher end of zone 2 to increase aerobic capacity and running efficiency. I like steady longruns a lot and challenge myself to get as close to marathon pace as possible on average while keeping HR in zone 2.
That’s a great idea. I’m definitely going to play around with that. Thanks for commenting!
Hey brother! I’m going to be at Houston as well, I’ll be doing the marathon tho
Come and say hi if you see me!
Like the alternating long run stimulus. I personally like bookend intervals, think 5 x 14mins with (3mins to eventually 90sec AR) where that 14mins is broken up into 2mins 5k, 10mins HM, 2mins 5k. With gradually reducing active recovery between them as you keep repeating the workout over the weeks. You basically LT2 dance during the interval, and it soon makes goal HM seem much easier. And allows you to operate closer to LT2 for extended periods and push LT2 higher. V02max is overrated, without a high percentage of Max HR for your LT2 it's speed you can't effectively utilize.
Great session!!! I need to sit down and work this out but it sounds like a serious one! I’m in!!! :)
Great plan; I’ll be running a half in January to prepare my next year races. Hope you can be ready to break 2:30 my friend.
@@ivanmanzur1197 Good luck! If you are OK sharing venue/goals I’d love to hear them!
I’ll be running here in USA at Naples Florida next January 18 looking sub 80’ at 55 years young and then at Gainesville Florida, 10k world master championship March 29 looking 36’ and finally Berlin Marathon looking to break 2:50.
@ Those are some lofty goals!! Go for it! Love this…!! Let me know how you get on?
@@global-runner Sure! I’ll be doing my own training plan as I gave you (I have same Excel for 10k and half too)
Some very interesting ideas in there. I like the alternation of the long run and the progressive run, and also the wildcard Saturday sounds like a smart thing to include.
@@adriaantermors8122 thank you! While I love a plan, I think flexibility is also key! Thanks for commenting!!
I have my favourite workout suggestion! Adapted version of a popular marathon session, that our club runner named Ilpo runs a lot. Therefore we call it: Ilpo Express. 🚂 1. Run - 5 km 2. Recover - 1 km 3. Run - 4 km 4. Recover - 1 km 5. Run - 3 km 6. Recover - 1 km 7. Run - 2 km 8. Recover - 1 km 9. Run - 1 km. Alternates between running and floats, with the majority of the running intervals at around half marathon pace up to: whatever is left in the tank. 😅You mastered the workout if the average pace is about your target half marathon pace. 😎
@@runnerfromhel I love this one!!!!! Look out for this in a future video!
@ Ilpo Express! If you actually do it: Good luck. 🍀 Say Ilpo Express in the vid, and I will share it to my whole club. The workout has reached legendary status in our club and is feared and beloved at the same time. Cheers from Helsinki!
@ I definitely will!! Is it iipo or ilpo?
@ ILPO. 🚂
I love that your training philosophy, embraces Mondays for rest days (as I do.) But I wonder, is there an element where you introduce a new stress to your body, after a few repetitive weeks? Will you do that in the core sessions?
@@runnerfromhel this is a great question. You’re right I think - it’s the controlled stress that creates changes (hopefully improvement!). The current stress is the increased mileage and hopefully once I have adapted to that, the core sessions will be the change in stimulus. At least, that’s the plan!
Exciting mate! Cant beat writing out a physical plan on a piece of cardboard with a pen and ruler, proper planning that!! Good luck with the double T work, hope it goes well... i'll be following
Ha ha proper old school that! I’ll hang it on my wall. :) Thanks. I found them useful last time I dipped my toe in. Saw you smashed a 5k. Great running so soon after your marathon!
If I were you I’d do a few sessions at 10k pace, 6 x mile, 10 x 1k… I’d even include a session or two @5k pace, basically the 10k paced workouts are your speed work for the half.
This is a great comment. Thanks. I’ll definitely be looking to incorporate some of those types of session once I’ve got my fitness up. I think they will be key. Thanks for commenting!
.
Love the channel...I'm 52 and looking to hit big goals too. What are those amazing glasses you are using with paces, HR, etc? Thx!
Thank you!! Good luck on your goals!! It’s not the glasses (I wish it were!) it’s an insta360 go 3s camera and you can overlay the stats from Garmin after. It’s so cool!
@@global-runner Thank you!!
Looks like a solid plan. Those double days would murder me.
I always thought that. But if you build slowly, it’s doable. (But definitely not for everyone!!) Thanks for commenting. :)
Looking forward to following along. Most content is geared towards the marathon but everyone actually runs halves!!
I’m super excited for this!!! :). Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it!
Great workouts, high quality video with the drone and the digital data + good music !
@@francisvaillancourt100 Thank you!! I really appreciate that. I slays do my best to make them as interesting as possible! :)
"Autumn of Speed". Love it.
Thank you!! It’s coming to an end…!
You're blistering fast! Did my Sunday longrun here in Sweden (got a house here in rural Sweden) in shorts and 10-12C, so no early snow this year😅. A 1/2 mara next Sunday, so no rest for the wicked🤪. Did 75 km the week after Frankfurt, not bad...or maybe it was? Btw: nice trails🤩
That’s such a nice comment! Thank you! We had a dusting of snow but no more and it’s been warm again. The ski hills are apparently opening this week but I’m not sure how - there’s no snow! Let me know how the half goes - that’s super close to Frankfurt so Jake sure you’re kind to yourself!! I’m so lucky with those trails. That’s the Canmore Nordic centre.
@global-runner If there's just a scent of frost these modern snowmachines are making miracles, at a cost of course🤪. The skiresorts over here in Scandinavia will struggle more so far, but you can't expect those to be able to open this early anyway. But sure, the skifreaks have started drooling😅. I did some woodchopping just now, but the small gnats drove me insane. Can you believe that, in November😱🤪. And Friday a wasp rested in my Puma shoe, stinging me hard when lacing up, causing my upper ankle to swell hard for 2 days! Such is countrylife😅.
The stationary bike is an amazing tool, if you can stomach it. Really frees up the pounding from the legs if you traditionally need rest days. But can still do all the LT1/2 work. As for HARD short intervals. Throw on the Stryd pod, and do a set on a flat, and then do another set on fairly tame uphill. And then check the Impact Loading Rate afterwards... I was doing 1k to 1.6k uphill at CP with a 400-600m easy downhill jog recovery, thanks to an awesome horseshoe loop. For longer efforts, doing these at Marathon power would be a decent starting point while you adapt. As I go into my Boston block, it's all gonna be about uphill/downhill power. But I will caution you about trying to hold power targets on sustained downhills. Power doesn't translate perfectly downhill. So you can easily overdo it and pound the legs to mush. If I can hold 5-10% less power on the downhill it seems like a decent and safe alternative. Again, check the impact loading rate for the same power on the flats, vs the same power on the uphill and downhill...it's very eye opening about the balance of stimulus vs risk. I've got to the point where I simply need to get faster, but after a calf tear in the spring of 2022 I've been shying away from anything faster than over/under LT2 intervals. But post Chicago recovery, with finally incorporating strength training again, my calf is a non-issue. So here's hoping I can get back to hitting the maximal aerobic domain, maybe even into VO2 max. Something longer than simple strides which is all neuromuscular recruitment.
Great comment as always! Thank you! I just got the Stryd footpod (it took more than 3 weeks to arrive!). Tried it out yesterday but I’m still learning and letting it collect data at this stage… I love a bit of speed. It’s my running candy. :)
Hitting some lovely paces! I'd like to try some of those workouts if my knee ever gets better again.
Hopefully you can sort that out! My physio has me rolling my quads with a ball as much as I can. See if that helps? My knee issues usually come from my quads.
@@global-runner I'll try that. My knee issues also seem to come from my quads.
@ I’m definitely no expert - but it cant hurt! :)
Superb
I love that you’re doing hills session and wearing “Indian Hills” shirt 😂👍
Ha! That never even crossed my mind!! /)
Icy conditions make it kind of dangerous! Otherwise, I’m a cold runner - do so much better in the cold than heat or humidity!
I’m the same. But I’ve had some pretty crazy slip-on-ice injuries. Once you’ve banged up one hip on ice, it’s tough to be confident on it ever again!
So true! Even walking the streets of Chicago one winter had me lose confidence in walking in icy conditions 🥶
@ i hear ya!!
I was looking forward to this!
Thank you!! I had a small pause due to inclement weather!
Calgary area is so beautiful!!
@ It really is. Very lucky to run here
If you're a marathon runner the shoe that isn't given enough credit is the adidas prime x strung 2. Not as versatile as a superblast 2 but for specific goal pace workouts it's unbeatable. Zero foot fatigue and just bounce a long even when tired above 18 plus miles. I'm actually surprised more people don't race it.
This is a great comment. I have a pair of the original prime x strung and I loved them so much … until I hated them! It’s very much a “me” issue but they were causing my ankles to hurt so I stopped wearing them. But they were super fast until I did.
@global-runner maybe try the 2 as I heard the first was more unstable.
Lots and lots of Saucony Kinvara's. Pretty much the perfect daily trainer for me and I can get around 400 miles out of them. Can usually pick up last year's model for $60-$70.
Wow you’re lucky! You found your perfect shoe and it’s super cheap! That is the best case scenario!
How many kms/miles do you think you will get out of the On Cloudsurfer?
@@dokutaaguriin I change my shoes more regularly than most people but even I was getting 400 miles (600km) out of them. They are quite soft but they last longer than most soft shoes, I find.
Kiprun KD900. I just wanted to try them out without having much hope. But they've become my absolute favorite shoes. They do everything pretty well. Super light and super fast. After 500 km they feel like they did on the first day. I'll buy them again.
I am a MASSIVE decathlon fan. But I’ve never tried their shoes. I might have to reassess my prejudice on that front!
The Cloudsurfer also has a trail version which looks interesting for the winter! Swiper the cat really wants to be a star in one of your videos!!! :))
He does! He’s the superstar!
New Balance Fuelcell Propel V5. For me as good as the novablast, which I love, and ridiculously cheap. The kind of shoes you can take on vacation and use for everything.
That’s the real test!!! If I can only take one pair on vacation, which would it be?? :)
I bought it today and in 2 hours I'm watching your video. And what did I find out? Well, the shoes will be great.. thanks and many happy miles... (I'll give info when I'm satisfied)
Great!! I loved them. Hope they work just as well for you!! Let me know??
I bought 2 pair of NovaBlast V3 as part of my spring marathon block, which also got me through my fall marathon block as well. I have over 1200km in these 2 pairs and they still have life left in them, but you can clearly see the wear in the mid/forefoot around the trampoline section now. Planning to wait for Black Friday and swing a pair of Peg Plus, and Invincible V3 to help get me through the boston block. Add in my SuperBlast V2, Tempo Next%, and AF VX. I'm good till Boston. Still unsure what the fall will be...torn between P’tit Train du Nord Marathon in Oct or just making the entire summer about going sub 90mins at the half at my local half marathon I run every year towards the end of Sept.
@@timtrenholm3698 I only ever tried the Novablast v1 (in the store) and I found that they made me roll inwards a little bit so I never went with them but I am desperate to try out the Superblast 2. I bought some Peg Plus recently and after about 30 milers I’m really enjoying them! I had a pair of Invincible v1 and I liked them but i heard the v3 had heel slippage issues so I shied away from those a little - definitely interested in what v4 brings in that shoe though! I love your race dilemma!! It’s similar to mine. :)
ASICS Noosa Tri 15 - so comfortable and surprisingly nimble👍 They’ve released the 16 so you can grab a bargain on the 15 which is essentially the same!
@@rhydianhooper8386 thanks for the tip! I think these ones flew under the radar a bit because they were marketed as triathlon shoes but a lot of people seem to like them.
My shoe rotation. Long run: New balance 1080 V13 Shorter runs: On Cloud surfer Intervals: Saucony Speed 4 Race day: Saucony Pro 3
@@josedescoteaux1 that’s a great shoe rotation! I’m looking for a longer run shoe and I’m waiting for the Novablast 2 (which is permanently out of stock!) so I’ll take a look at the 1080!
I ran most of my marathons in the older adios before the introduction of the super shoes. Brought me to low 2.50's a few times. I've also ran my half marathon pb in the old streakflys. Love them, light and felt barely there.
@@davidleonard37 Thanks for the comment! I used to run in the NB racing ones (can’t remember the number!). Running a half in the streakfly is impressive - you must have good form!!
@@global-runner my forms not too bad but it can always improve. I personally haven't ran any faster in the new plated shoes but that could be age too as I'm now 52 but I'm hanging in there for as long as I can.
@@davidleonard37 you go for it mate! Love hearing this. And if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
Streakfly is pretty good, but the durability is not that great. At 50km, the midsole glue is separating laterally.😢
@@m.ch4rmaland3r10 you should send those back. I have about 600km on mine. Admittedly mostly treadmill but I got way more mileage out of mine than I was expecting!
SuperBlast 2 is definitely the best long run shoe. Can’t rate it high enough & get at least 1,000ks out of it
@@BennyD-y3i I am desperate to try these but they are as rare as hen’s teeth!
Totally agree! Though I ran the Frankfurt Marathon last weekend in Adios Pro 3, I witnessed "a lot" of runners in SB2. I was almost comitted to ask them during the race how they felt, but I saved my breath and energy😅.
SB2’s are such a joy to run in
Adidas Boston 12 - great shoe and great value. Weirdly preferred them to the Takumi Sen 10 for hard sessions and also handle other paces well. Adidas Pro 3 for sessions too, so unbelievably durable. New Balance More v4/v5. Plush and soak up miles. I went through 4 pairs of the v4, just love them. I'm a sucker for some decent stack height!
@@nickflemming-nichol908 I loved the Boston up until they made it a massive brick. That version before (was it the 9?) was one of my favourite shoes ever. Nimble, low stack. I was really upset when they made such a dramatic change!
@@global-runner Ahhhh interesting. I think we're on opposite ends of the spectrum with our shoe likes and dislikes! I doubt the Boston will go back to what it was, you've just got to hope they don't do the same to the adiós!
@@nickflemming-nichol908 Ah man if they do the same to the Adios then I’ll be sending a strongly-worded letter!

Ha ha. Well I had to do something with all that footage! :)
Huge Adios fan here - the 8s are great and have done a variety of runs in them but mainly for speedier stuff and treadmill (and fave gym shoe!) Looking forward to the 9. Didn't like iterations 5, 6 & 7 - adidas ruined the Adios with their pants Lightstrike foam. The versions prior, the 3 in particular, was great for everything - used them for all races.
@@r_unner_G Yeah they have been a real staple of my running shoe rotation for a long time now. I’m also very excited to see what the 9 brings. It’s looking very promising…
I enjoyed Streakfly! Such great show for tempo and interval sessions!👍
